They are the first sports to be cut from the Games in 69 years and it means Regents Park, which was due to host them, will no longer be a 2012 venue. Squash and karate were initially nominated as their replacements but neither polled enough IOC members' votes to win a place at the Games. Rugby union sevens, golf and roller skating were also in the running. International Olympic Committee members went through seven rounds of voting to decide which two of the five sports should be put up for a vote to give them Olympic status. Squash and karate were chosen, but not enough of the IOC members wanted them to be included. It means the earliest they can now be introduced into the Games is 2016.

Buy Olympic Marathon
from the publisher Excerpted from Olympic Marathon, by Charlie Lovett The Fight to Establish the Women's Race Previous Chapter Next Chapter By the 1970s, the Olympic Marathon had come a long way from the dusty roads of Athens. Yet women were still not allowed to compete and the struggle to establish a women's Olympic Marathon was itself something of a long-distance race. Before the 1980s, there were no women's distance races in the Olympics. In the Moscow Games, the longest race for women was the 1,500 meters, which had been instituted in 1972. Women had been excluded from track and field competition altogether until 1928, when the longest race was the 800 meters. Despite a world record by winner Lina Radke of Germany, many of the competitors had not properly prepared for the race and several collapsed in exhaustion. This led Olympic organizers to consider the race too strenuous for women. The president of the IOC, Count Henri Baillet-Latour, even suggested the elimination of all women's competition from the Games. Such a drastic move was not taken, but until 1960, when the 800 meters reappeared, no race over 200 meters was contested by women in the Olympics. This is not to say there was no tradition of women's long-distance running. Women had been forbidden from participating in the ancient Olympics. A woman who was caught even as a spectator at the Games could face execution. But women in ancient Greece held their own festival to honor the goddess Hera every five years. Only one athletic event was held-a short footrace.

What exactly makes thousands of people take part in the triathlon events, where you have to swim 1500 metres, then immediately cycle 40 kilometres and right afterwards run 10 km – and all of that without a break?
Description
All triathlons consist of Swimming, Cycling, and Running one after the other, but there are three different types:
The Olympic distance triathlon, which is one of the 28 Olympic sports, consists of: 1500m swimming, 40km cycling and 10km running.
The sprint: 750m swimming, 20km cycling and 5km running
Long distance: 4 km swimming, 120 km cycling and 30 km running
The Olympic distance triathlon has prevailed and is included in the Olympic competition schedule. The distances of each discipline at the classic (Olympic) distance correspond to the longest distances adopted by the respective International Federations (FINA, UCI, IAAF), regarding the disciplines carried out in a stadium. Triathlon demands endurance, technique and tactics. ATHENS 2004 Triathlon
See the Olympic sports animations  The sport of Triathlon in the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games was staged in the wider area of the Municipality of Vouliagmeni in southern Athens. The swimming took place at one of the most famous beaches, Oceanida. The water quality is excellent and the beach has all the necessary facilities. The start took place from a floating pontoon.

My Olympics
Citius Fortius Altius Revisited
With the 2004 Olympics about to begin, I have been thinking about the large number of sports that make up the Olympics. There are too many sports, and a lot of them are stupid. For example, baseball and softball are Olympic sports, and synchronised swimming is ridiculed because it is an art-form rather than a sport. So I have decided to get rid of the stupid sports from the Olympics, and I have decided that removing all sports that do not conform to the Olympic Ideals swifter, stronger, higher is a good place to start. I use these ideals as the basis of removing sports and adding new sports to my Olympic games.
Sports to Remove
Before I start removing sports from my Olympics, I can simplify the Ideals by removing higher , as it is really similar to swifter. I can now throw out all sports that do not fit the two Ieals. However, this does not leave us many sports, so I will keep all sports that can be used to kill people, so I will rewrite the Ideals to read swifter, stronger deadlier

The sport of Modern Pentathlon has been called the "true Olympic sport" and the "sport that most accurately conveys the ideals of Olympism." History and the Father of Olympism
In the Ancient Games, 2700 years ago, the Pentathlon was the competition showing the best and most complete athletes. The Greek philosopher Aristotle is quoted as stating: The most perfect sportsmen, therefore, are the Pentathletes because in their bodies strength and speed are combined in beautiful harmony. Modern pentathlon was created by Pierre de Coubertin and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the sport is the only sport created solely for the Olympic Games, and has been included in every Olympic Games since 1912. As in the Ancient times, it was designed to capture the true spirit and essence of the Games. A complete and well-rounded athlete represents the ideal complete and well-rounded person that Pierre de Coubertin hoped to promote when he revived the Olympic Games. Modern Pentathlon is the only sport that was created in its entirety by the IOC, as the Ancient sports were created by the Ancient Greeks. All other sports existed outside of the IOC or joined the Olympic Movement after having existed independently.

Behind the scenes, a wide range of scientific and technological wizardry are needed to ensure accurate measurements. Printer-friendly version of complete topic How measurement is used in sport Measurement is an essential element of all sports in two ways. First, measurements are taken to determine the outcome of an event, such as which runner was fastest or which pole-vaulter jumped highest. Second, measurements are used to communicate the agreed rules and regulations of a particular sport. It would be unfair, for example, to claim a world record in the 50 metres freestyle event if the swimming pool is a few centimetres short of the required length ( Box 1 Units of measurement The starting point for any measurement is the unit of measurement. For it to be useful, everyone must agree on which unit to use and what it means. In contrast to the precision of today, units of measurement in the past were often quite imprecise. For example, one cubit was the distance from a person's fingertip to their elbow. An acre was originally the area of land that a team of two oxen could plough in one day. These units were not always comparable: people vary in size, and the work-rate of oxen depends on a whole range of factors, including what they ate for breakfast. To improve accuracy of measurement, people soon realised that units must be based on agreed standards. These days, most units of measurement used in Australia are those of the
