... Discuss Gatlin sweeps U.S. sprints 05:58 AM CDT on Monday, June 27, 2005 Associated Press He won the 200 meters Sunday, becoming the first man in 20 years to sweep the sprints. "This year is going very well and I want to do the same thing in Helsinki," said Gatlin, who qualified for the world championships in Finland in August. Gatlin, the Olympic gold medalist in the 100 and bronze medalist in the 200, was disqualified for a false start in the 100 preliminaries Friday. He was reinstated after a protest, and was unstoppable from there. "I had to turn it around and make sure it was a very positive experience," he said. "I feel like I'm back in my zone, like I was in college, doubling and hopefully dominating as well." Running into a head wind, Gatlin won the 200 in 20.04 seconds. The last man to win both races at the U.S. meet was Kirk Baptiste in 1985. Tyson Gay was second in 20.06, followed by Olympic 200 champion Shawn Crawford in 20.12.

Name a sport where you're encouraged to get your play clothes dirty and Mom and Dad still think it's cool. If you said, "CROSS COUNTRY," you're exactly RIGHT! Cross country is one of the few sports that actually encourages you to run through the mud and puddles (or sometimes snow and ice) in pursuit of victory. Many years ago, cross country was also an Olympic sport. It was contested as a 'team' event at the 1904, 1912, 1920 and 1924 Summer Games, and as an individual event at the 1912, 1920 and 1924 Games. (USATF Trivia Question: Can you name the only USA individual Olympic medallist in Olympic Cross Country? If you can't guess, the answer will be listed at the bottom of this story.) USATF's Junior Olympic program is made up of preliminary meets in many of our 57 local Associations, which lead to their Association Championships, and then to 16 Regional Championships. Thousands participate and the group narrows to the 'best of the best' at the National Championships each December. Last year, the meet had more than 2,500 entries.

Inside a Soviet-style training camp, corporate scientists are reengineering neuro-mechanics, blood chemistry, and brain waves. Welcome to the Oregon Project, where Nike is rebuilding the US marathon team one high tech step at a time.
By Andrew Tilin IT'S A SATURDAY MORNING IN CENTRAL PARK, and 44 elite runners nervously stretch, retie their shoelaces, and jog in place before the start of the USA Men's 8K Championships. Most of the invited athletes are mulling over typical prerace concerns: Did I log enough miles? Am I psyched to push my body? Should I hit the Porta Potti?

But two runners, Dan Browne and Chad Johnson, have more on their minds: Was there enough oxygen in our hermetically sealed house? How reliable is the Russian brain wave software? Did that high-frequency neuro-mechanical stimulator actually strengthen our legs?

Olympic Biodiversity Preview
By Steve Sailer With the Summer Olympics starting a month from now in Athens, it might be fun to look at some of the more enduring patterns in this global pageant of nationalism and human biodiversity . For the casual fan who can't remember the names of individual athletes, it's always enjoyable to check in to see if old trends are still operative. Practically every boy on Earth tries sprinting. Fast runners bubble up through local competitions and finally, every four years, the 64 fastest sprinters in the world wind up at the Olympics to compete in the men's 100-meter dash. Three rounds later, only eight are left to race in the Finals. Remarkably, in each of the last five Olympics—1984 through 2000—every finalist, 40 in all, has been of West African descent.

Moscow hosted finals of all-Russian Olympic Day of running
MOSCOW, June 18 (RIA Novosti) - The final competition of the 16th All-Russian Olympic Day of Running was held in Moscow on Olympiisky avenue. The running on the symbolic distance of 2,012 meters was held during the event. The runners, who were Olympic Champions, journalists, athletic families, sports veterans, representatives of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) and Federal Agency of Physical Culture and Sport, signed an open letter for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in support of Moscow to host the 2012 Olympics. The letter could have been signed by anyone willing to do it. A huge banner was installed on Saturday near the Olympiisky sports center. People were leaving their signatures on the banner and were writing words in support of the Moscow's application to the IOC to host the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Famous figure skater Irina Rodnina was among those, who left their signatures. "Many people gathered on Olympiisky avenue. They love sports and support the idea of the 2012 Olympics in Moscow. Those who signed today the open letter to the IOC honestly hope that on July 6 in Singapore a historic choice will be made and the Olympic fire will be lit in Moscow in 2012," many times Olympic champion Rodnina said.

Legal drug running
September 28 2002 Big spender: Cathy Freeman spent $200 a week on vitamins and supplements in the lead-up to the Sydney Olympics. Photo: Steve Christo A new survey has found that Olympic athletes are addicted to vitamins and minerals, writes Jacquelin Magnay. Australia's Olympic gold medallist Cathy Freeman spent $3480 on vitamins and supplements from health food shops in the four months leading up to the Sydney Olympic Games. Freeman's $200 a week habit, which was detailed in Victorian Supreme Court documents in her legal battle with former boyfriend and manager Nick Bideau, was not unusual among her Olympic peers. A groundbreaking survey of medications taken by athletes at the Sydney Olympics was conducted by former chairman of the Australian Sports Drug Agency and Olympic sports doctor Brian Corrigan and the director of the Australian Sports Drug Testing Laboratory, Ray Kazlauskas. In a worrying revelation, the survey found "an unhealthy fixation amongst athletes in regards to vitamins".
