Greene is neither poet nor rapper. But know this: His words flow straight from the soul of the world's fastest man. Desk? Traffic? Been there and worse. "I've had bad jobs," says Greene. "Now I have a good one. I'm thankful." Now it's evening, after the sermon and the spirited workout that followed. Greene is hunched over the dining room table in his five-bedroom home in Granada Hills, north of Los Angeles. One of Greene's houseguests is watching a movie on the 120-inch projection television, replete with plaster-peeling DVD system. Greene loves to watch loud movies, like Top Gun and Scarface. Fast ones, too. "I've watched Ben on that screen," says Greene, nodding. "I've watched him lots of times."

  • Storylines By Mitch Gelman and Adam Levine, CNNSI.com SYDNEY, Australia A pair of golden shoes and a national heroine took center stage at Olympic Stadium, and a veteran who couldn't jump higher than his competitors thought his way onto the medal stand. On a cold Sunday night during which a downpour created puddles on the track, Michael Johnson cruised 400 meters in his golden shoes to earn a place in Monday night's final. Cathy Freeman ran through the rain to win a spot in the women's 400 final. If she wins gold Monday night, don't be surprised if they name Olympic Stadium after her. While the high-profile runners drew the flashbulbs, the high jumpers faced off in what turned out to be part championship boxing match, part chess match.

Greek Sports We have already seen that the ancient Greeks were very good artists and actors. However, this is not all that they did well. Keep reading to find out about sports and athletes in ancient Greece. What role did sports play in ancient Greece? The ancient Greeks were huge sports fans. Every four years, the Olympic Games were held in the staduim at Olympia. The best athletes in Greece competed in different events that were a part of religious life. The games began with a sacrifice to the god Zeus . Because the games were religious, anyone who was caught cheating during the games was never allowed to compete again because cheating was considered disrespectful to the gods. photo courtesy of Michael Bennett What types of sports could I have played? Many of the games played in the Olympic Games of ancient Greece are still included in the Olympics of today. Three of these games are boxing, weightlifting , and the pentathalon. Boxing was much the same in ancient Greece as it is today. Boxers padded their hands in cloth and fought until one of them was knocked out. The pentathalon was made up of five different events: discus throwing , javelin throwing, wrestling, running, and long jumping. All of these events are still included in the Olympics today. One event from the ancient Greek Olympics that is too dangerous to be included in the games today is chariot racing.

The Australian Olympic Committee tonight applauded the Federal Government’s $50 million budget commitment to sport. “The Federal Government’s commitment will enable Australia’s Olympic athletes to better prepare for the Beijing Games in 2008 and the Winter Games in Torino 2006 and Vancouver 2010” said AOC President John Coates. “The Government recognises the terrific sacrifices our athletes make as they strive to represent their country at the Olympic Games. This money will help put bread and milk on the table and petrol in the car which are essential for athletes many of whom have given up careers to train twice a day up to seven days a week” Coates said. “The Government contribution simply relieves the financial pressure and allows our athletes to get on with the job.”

What exactly makes thousands of people take part in the triathlon events, where you have to swim 1500 metres, then immediately cycle 40 kilometres and right afterwards run 10 km – and all of that without a break?
    Description
All triathlons consist of Swimming, Cycling, and Running one after the other, but there are three different types:
The Olympic distance triathlon, which is one of the 28 Olympic sports, consists of: 1500m swimming, 40km cycling and 10km running.
The sprint: 750m swimming, 20km cycling and 5km running
Long distance: 4 km swimming, 120 km cycling and 30 km running
The Olympic distance triathlon has prevailed and is included in the Olympic competition schedule. The distances of each discipline at the classic (Olympic) distance correspond to the longest distances adopted by the respective International Federations (FINA, UCI, IAAF), regarding the disciplines carried out in a stadium. Triathlon demands endurance, technique and tactics. ATHENS 2004 Triathlon
See the Olympic sports animations  The sport of Triathlon in the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games was staged in the wider area of the Municipality of Vouliagmeni in southern Athens. The swimming took place at one of the most famous beaches, Oceanida. The water quality is excellent and the beach has all the necessary facilities. The start took place from a floating pontoon.

Photograph by Maria Daniels, courtesy of The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology There were 4 types of races at Olympia. The stadion was the oldest event of the Games. Runners sprinted for 1 stade (192 m.), or the length of the stadium. The other races were a 2- stade race (384 m.), and a long-distance run which ranged from 7 to 24 stades (1,344 m. to 4,608 m.). And if these races weren't enough, the Greeks had one particularly grueling event which we lack. There was also a 2 to 4- stade (384 m. to 768 m.) race by athletes in armor. This race was especially useful in building the speed and stamina that Greek men needed during their military service. If we remember that the standard hoplite armor (helmet, shield, and greaves)weighed about 50-60 lbs, it is easy to imagine what such an event must have been like.

Golf, four other sports in running for Olympic inclusion
    By Stephen Wilson
ASSOCIATED PRESS 9:58 a.m. September 22, 2004 The International Olympic Committee said Wednesday it notified those five sports' governing bodies that they will be "studied further" as part of a review of the Summer Games' competition schedule. The IOC is assessing the 28 sports on the program of last month's Athens Olympics to determine whether changes should be made. IOC president Jacques Rogge repeatedly has said that sports only will be added if others are dropped. The maximum will stay at 28 sports, with around 10,500 athletes. In Athens, the IOC formally accepted the criteria for judging which sports should be on the program. Among the key points are global participation, spectator attendance, media interest, the sport's anti-doping policies, and whether the sport features the world's best athletes in the Olympics. Removal of a sport requires a vote of the full IOC membership. The last sport dropped from the Summer Olympics was polo in 1936.

The Sports of the Ancient Olympics
The Ancient Olympics had many sports including boxing, equestrian events, pankration, pentathlon, wrestling, and running.
Boxing, in the ancient olypics, was played without many rules. Men who competed in boxing played with no rounds. When a man was knocked down the game ended. There were no rules about hitting a downed oponnent. There were no weight classes in ancient boxing. Instead of gloves, boxers used leather thongs on their hands and wrists. This left their fingers free. These leather straps were called himantes
Equestrain events were very important to the ancient Greeks because it portrayed strength to opponents. There was a chariot race as well as riding. There was a 2-horse and 4-horse chariot race. There were chariots carried by full grown horses, as well as foals. There was a race including chariots led by mules. The course on which these races were carried out was twelve laps around the stadium track, or about 9 miles.
Riding, however, was carried out on a course that was 6 laps around the stadium, or about 4.5 miles. There were races with foals and horses and the jokeyes rode without stirrups. Only wealthy people rode in these races because they were the only people who could afford to keep a horse, and give food and board to the jockey. However, when a horse came first in a race, the owners were the ones to get the wreath of olives instead of the jockey.
Pankration, another ancient sport, was a combination of boxing and wrestling. Oponents were allowed to punch, but there were rules about biting or gouging another's anatomy. Fighters did not used the leather

    September 2000
    Physics, technology and the Olympics
Feature: September 2000 What effect does technology have on the performance of athletes in sports such as the 100-metre sprint, the pole vault and the javelin? Ultimately, it seems that there is a conflict between the laws of physics and the laws of sport. The modern Olympic games were founded by Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1896, with the intention of improving health and education, promoting world peace, and encouraging fair and equal competition. However, the motto of the modern Olympic games - citius, altius, fortius (swifter, higher, stronger) - shows that it is not only the taking part that counts. Winning is just as important now as it was 2500 years ago at the original games in ancient Greece. Then, as now, winning athletes were treated like heroes, given seats for life at theatres and public gatherings, and awarded cash bonuses, gifts and prizes. It is no wonder, then, that athletes - both ancient and modern - have used any means at their disposal to improve the speeds at which they can run, the distances they can throw and the heights they can jump. In sports such as the discus, hammer or javelin - where pieces of equipment are used - athletic performance is governed by the laws of physics, but ultimately limited by the arbitrary rules of sport. And herein lies the conflict. It is human nature for athletes to improve themselves so that they are swifter, higher and stronger - and to use technology if it helps. It is the role of sports' governing bodies to allow continual improvements to equipment, but to stop those developments that give any competitor too much of an unfair advantage. Conflict can arise as sport is not meant to be a test of who has the best equipment - it should be an even match between one athlete and another, and from one year to the next.
