Holmes 'stunned' Papers: Triumphs hailed ... Kelly's triumph Kelly Holmes ran another perfect race to take a wonderful 1500m gold and make Olympic history in Athens. Holmes, who won 800m gold on Monday, set a new British record with 3 minutes 57.90 seconds when it mattered most. She becomes the first Briton for 84 years to achieve the Olympic middle-distance double. Holmes sprinted down the home straight to finish three metres clear of Russia's Tatyana Tomashova, with Romania's Maria Cioncin in bronze. "I can't believe it - I'm gobsmacked," Holmes said afterwards. Academy: We trace Kelly's steps to Olympic glory "After the 800m I had a lot of confidence and I was feeling good going through the rounds, but these girls are really good and I had to focus more than ever in that race. "I was trying to place myself in the right position and put myself where I had to make a move.

The 34-year-old, who added 1500m gold to her 800m triumph on Saturday, hopes to continue her winning form. "I don't plan to retire," she said. "I'm in the best shape of my life. "I would still like an indoors title but I have got my dream twice over. "The most important thing now is to enjoy my sport and appreciate all the things it gives me." Holmes was given the honour of carrying the flag for Great Britain at Sunday's closing ceremony. British Olympic chief Simon Clegg paid tribute to her achievement. "It is unbelievable," he said. "I think she has run two perfect races and that is why I asked her to carry the flag at the closing ceremony."

ANCIENT ORIGINS HUNT TURNS FROM FOOD TO MEDALS In the sphere of track and field, there are at least two events that precede the ancient Greeks and running races. The pole vault formed part of the ancient Irish Taliteann Games in 1829BC, the origins of the activity stemming from the use of poles to jump over streams. Wood was used up until the 19th century, when bamboo from Asia was deemed better for the purpose. The hammer, too, was thrown at the Taliteann Games. The most famous of all track and field events in history is, arguably, a road race; the marathon. Legend has it that the race was devised by the Greeks to commemorate Pheidippides, a soldier who ran 25 miles to bring home news of the Athenian victory over the Persians in the Battle of Marathon. Pheidippides ran, yelled out the great news and then dropped dead, so the story goes. In honour of the soldier who went the extra mile, the marathon of the ancient Games was run over 26 miles.

The Olympic Games:
Summer 2004 in Athens, Greece

Athens, Greece, will host the 2004 Summer Olympics. For information on Greece, click here . For a page on Greece's flag, click here The Games of the XXVIII Olympiad are being held in Athens, Greece. The opening ceremonies are on August 13, 2004. The closing ceremonies are on Sunday, August 29, 2004. The Ancient Olympics The ancient Greeks dedicated the Olympic Games to the god Zeus. The original games were held on the plain of Olympia in Peloponnesos, Greece. The Greeks held the first Olympic games in the year 776 BC (over 2700 years ago), and had only one event, a sprint (a short run that was called the "stade"). The race was run by men who competed in the nude. A wreath of olive branches was placed on the winner's head (in Greek, this is called a kotinos). The olive tree was the sacred tree of Athens, Greece. Women were neither allowed to compete in the games nor to watch them, because the games were dedicated to Zeus and were therefore meant for men.

19. The History Of Track And Field. Where Running Started.
Track and field has been the centerpiece of the summer olympic games International professional running, initiated in the 1970s, has had limited success
http://athleticscholarships.net/history-of-track-and-field.htm
Home About Us What We Do Questions ... Contact Us was this how track and field started the origins and facts about running and track How it all began The ancient Olympic Games began in the year 776 BC, when Koroibos, a cook from the nearby city of Elis, won the stadium race, a foot race 600 feet long. According to some literary traditions, this was the only athletic event of the games for the first 13 Olympic festivals. Other evidence, both literary and archaeological, suggests that the games may have existed at Olympia much earlier than this date, perhaps as early as the 10th or 9th century BC. A series of bronze tripods have been found at Olympia, some of which appear to be dated at about the 9th century BC, and it has also been suggested that these tripods may in fact be prizes for some of the early events at Olympia. The marathon was not an event of the ancient Olympic games. The marathon is a modern event that was first introduced in the Modern Olympic Games of 1896 in Athens, a race from Marathon - northeast of Athens - to the Olympic Stadium, a distance of 42.195 kilometers. The race commemorates the run of Pheidippides, an ancient "day-runner" who carried the news of the Persian landing at Marathon of 490 BC to Sparta (a distance of 149 miles) in order to enlist help for the battle. According to the fifth century BC ancient Greek historian Herodotus, Pheidippides delivered the news to the Spartans the next day. The distance of the modern marathon was standardized as 26 miles 385 yards or 42,195 kilometers in 1908 when the Olympic Games were held in London. The distance was the exact measurement between Windsor Castle, the start of the race, and the finish line inside White City Stadium
