15 July 2005 Sport Rugby Sevens tops the bill BY ERNEST MOTEBEJANE JOHANNESBURG - The introduction of Rugby Sevens would strengthen the summer Olympic Games. It would bring in more spectators, more television viewers, more internet users and more commercial revenue than the majority of the existing summer sports, according to published broadcasting and commercial statistical comparisons of the existing 28 sports and Rugby Sevens.
According to the International Rugby Board Coaches Trainer for Nigeria, Ntiense O.Williams, who is excited about the prospect of re-admission of the "Beautiful Rough Game Played by Gentlemen" into the Global fiesta, rugby stands head and shoulders above the other sports being considered for admission into the Olympics. The sport polled 49 points in an opinion poll conducted recently.
According to Williams, Rugby Sevens comes fifth in terms of tickets sold for its World Championships, when compared with the 28 existing summer Olympic sports. The 120,000 tickets sold over three days for the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Hong Kong earlier this year is only beaten by four of the existing sports: athletics, basketball, football and tennis. In other words, there are 24 current sports that sell fewer tickets than Rugby Sevens to their World Championships.
Translated to the Olympic Programme, Rugby Sevens would sell a minimum of US$10m worth of tickets for the Rugby Sevens event alone. Many of those buying tickets to Rugby Sevens would be first-time Olympic attendees, and they would also buy tickets to other events. Rugby fans travel. According to the Australian government, 65,000 Rugby fans came from abroad to watch the Rugby World Cup in 2003.

Wheelchair Rugby began in Canada in 1977. Although it is a relatively new sport for people with a disability, it is developing rapidly throughout the world. Wheelchair Rugby is a combination of the pace, regulations and skills required in Basketball and Rugby. The games are held on a basketball ground, and the ball used is similar to the one used in Volleyball. Men and women athletes with a physical disability can participate in Wheelchair Rugby. The athletes are assessed as to their balance and the mobility of the upper part of their body (trunk), the handling of the ball (passing, receiving, dribbling) and the use of the competition wheelchair (fast forward volition, stopping, changing direction). They are graded accordingly.
