Squash Hopes dashed:
The 117th IOC Session in Singapore voted to include 26 of the 28 current Olympic sports on the programme of the Games of the XXX Olympiad in 2012. The Session decided that baseball and softball will remain on the list of Olympic sports as noted in the Olympic Charter, rule 46, but will not be on the programme for 2012. The two sports are, however, eligible for inclusion in the programme of the 2016 Games.
Unfortunately for us, the IOC Executive Board also decided that as the numbers would be kept to 26, none of the five candidate sports (Squash, Roller Sports, Golf, Karate or Rugby) would be added to the programme of the 2012 Games Damn! Below is the full text of the World Squash press release on the issue: Squash Looks To The Future After Olympic Disappointment
Squash Looks To The Future After Olympic Disappointment Ted Wallbutton, Chief Executive of the WSF for fourteen years until his retirement at the beginning of this year, added: "Squash has come from nowhere in Olympic terms to become the first placed sport outside of the programme. It is an amazing achievement and far from failing we should be proud that we won the race, but failed to collect the prize."

It is often said that New Zealanders love sports, but in fact the same has been said of other Western societies such as Australia and the United States. There is some evidence that as participants New Zealanders are indeed more active than people of comparable countries. One-third of young people aged 5–17 are involved with sports clubs, and one-fifth of adults. But the evidence for spectator enthusiasm is less convincing. Certainly in any month 83% of adult New Zealanders (90% of men) watch sport on television, and a third will attend a game – more than go to the movies.
Golf
Golf is by far the most popular participation sport for men (attracting over 25% of adults) and the second most popular for women. There are almost 400 golf courses in New Zealand (the highest number per capita in the world). Yet with rare exceptions (such as the visit of Tiger Woods in 2001), the game attracts few spectators.
Netball
Amongst women’s sports, netball is pre-eminent both in terms of participation (the most popular sport among adult women) and public interest. This has been encouraged in recent years by extensive television coverage and the success of the national Silver Ferns team, who were world champions in 2003.

Sevens skippers slam IOC board member
June 13, 2005 The captains of the world's top 16 Sevens teams have expressed their outrage to the International Olympic Committee after one of the organisation's top officials made disparaging comments about the sport following a meeting of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations last week. The International Rugby Board is currently pushing for Sevens to be included in the Olympic Games. A vote on the composition of the 2012 Olympic sporting programme will take place in Singapore in July. Sevens is on a short list of five sports for possible inclusion in the sports programme should the IOC decide to modernise the programme. Their response was a unified letter to IOC President, Dr Jacques Rogge, on behalf of the 86 countries that have competed in over 20 IRB Sevens tournaments around the world over the last year, with the highlight being the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Hong Kong in March. They have requested Rogge to "publicly disassociate the IOC from these ill-founded, unwarranted and damaging comments which have been made about the sport that we all love and have dedicated

Rugby could realise Olympic dream
July 08, 2005 The International Olympic Committee will announce on Saturday whether rugby sevens will become an Olympic Sport. This comes days after baseball and softball were dropped from the Olympic programme for the 2012 London Games - and will replaced by rugby, squash, golf, karate or roller skating. IOC members held a secret ballot to decide which sports to axe from the existing list of 28 ahead of the London Games in 2012. And both baseball and softball, who will remain on the Olympic programme for 2008, failed to get enough votes. They are the first sports to be cut from the Olympics since polo in 1936. The five sports which could be admitted for the 2012 Olympics will find out on Saturday if they have been successful. According to the IRB, the introduction of sevens would strengthen the summer Games. It would bring in more spectators, more television viewers, more internet users and more commercial revenue than the majority of the existing summer sports, according to published broadcasting and commercial statistical comparisons of the existing 28 sports and sevens. Sevens comes fifth in terms of tickets sold for its world championships, when compared with the 28 existing summer Olympic sports. The 120 000 tickets sold over three days for the World Cup Sevens in Hong Kong earlier this year is only beaten by four of the existing sports: athletics, basketball, football and tennis. In other words, there are 24 current sports that sell fewer tickets than rugby sevens to their world championships.

LONDON The IOC released a hefty report Monday assessing the 28 sports hoping to stay in the Olympics and the five trying to get in, though the organization made no recommendations for adding or dropping any sport. The 265-page review by the International Olympic Committee's program commission lists facts and figures across a range of 33 criteria. The report is designed to serve as a guide for IOC members when they vote on the sports program in Singapore next month. Each of the 28 sports contested in Athens last summer will be put to a vote; any sport failing to get a majority will be dropped for the 2012 Olympics.

Summary:

What’s hot and what’s not when it comes to which sports are in or out of the Olympic Games?
A recent report by the Programme Commission of the International Olympic Committee puts baseball, softball and modern pentathlon on the chopping block. The new favourites are golf and rugby.
So how are these decisions made – especially when no sport wants to be thrown out of the Olympics, and plenty of others reckon it’s their turn to be on the O-List?
Details or Transcript: Amanda Smith: We’re starting The Sports Factor this morning with a question: What do the following sports have in common: cricket, croquet, motor-boating, polo and tug-of-war? MUSIC: ‘Time to Say Goodbye’ Amanda Smith: Yes, they’re all sports that at one time have been part of the Olympic Games, but that got the chop. Other discontinued Olympic events include live pigeon shooting, rope-climbing, an obstacle race and something called the plunge for distance, in swimming. So if you’re one of those people who thinks synchronised swimming is a strange and silly thing to have in the Olympics, well, there’ve been plenty of others in the past that you could put in that category as well. Now, late last week, the Programme Commission of the International Olympic Committee released a report with its recommendations for what sports it wants in, and out, of future Olympic Games, for Beijing and beyond. On the out-list: modern pentathlon, which has been in a shaky position for a while. The more surprising exclusions though are baseball, and softball. And those favoured for inclusion: golf and rugby. They’ve been recommended ahead of a long list of other Olympic aspirants, including squash, surfing, dance sport, bowling and chess.

They threw baseball and softball out of the Olympics , the first games cut since rugby in '36. They will not be played in London in the 2012 games.
There has been talk in the past of cutting fencing from the games, citing poor attendance and practical untelivisability. (Is that a word?) I believe that it is European block alone that has kept fencing around (I know that most Americans don't give a care about fencing). Do you think that the sport will be cut soon? Why?

Ball sports lose out as Olympic programme cut
From John Goodbody in Singapore
RUGBY sevens, golf and squash, all traditional British sports, have been blocked from being included in the 2012 Games in London after an extraordinary day of move and counter-move in Olympic politics. The 117th session of the IOC produced yet another series of surprises after giving London the Games instead of Paris. Members decided yesterday to drop baseball and softball from the programme of the 28 sports, but despite the urging of Jacques Rogge, the IOC President, they were not replaced with any of the five shortlisted sports. The decision is a blow to the authority of Rogge, who had tried to get rugby and golf on to the programme at the Mexico City session in 2002 but had been rebuffed. NI_MPU('middle');
