IRB secretary general Mike Miller told Xinhua that Rugby Sevens could bring in more spectators, television viewers, more internet users and more commercial revenue than the majority of the existing 28 Summer Olympic sports. The International Olympic Committee finalized the procedures Wednesday for the vote, which will be held when the general assembly meets in Singapore The IOC is considering whether to drop any of the existing 28 sports and add any of the five sports hoping to get into the Olympics golf, rugby, karate, squash and rollersports. The last sport to be cut from the Summer Games was polo in 1936. IOC president Jacques Rogge maintains the Olympics must continue to have a maximum 28 sports, 301 medal events and 10,500 athletes. Under the system adopted Wednesday by the IOC executive board,IOC members will vote by secret ballot July 8 on each of the 28 sports contested in Athens last summer. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) have decided to ditch baseball and softball from the Olympic programme, but will not be replacing them with other disciplines. Sevens - along with karate, golf, squash and roller hockey - all failed to win inclusion in a vote by the IOC in Singapore on Friday. The IOC members went through seven rounds of voting to decide which two of the five sports should be put up for a vote to give them Olympic status. Squash and karate were selected, before members overwhelmingly rejected their bids to join the Olympic programme. The news comes as blow to the International Rugby Board (IRB) who lobbied hard for the inclusion of the abbreviated form of the game, and to the Rugby Football Union (RFU) who were in line to stage the Olympic competition. The IRB had argued that Sevens would bring in more spectators, more viewers and more commercial revenue than the majority of the existing Olympic disciplines.

Athletics are truly a common language, and fewer things are more enjoyable than seeing simple people on a world-wide stage. Earlier in the day, the Session decided to kick out baseball and softball, sports very popular in USA, Canada, the Caribbean and Japan but almost unknown in Latin America, Africa and Europe.
