Sevens may help rugby's Olympic return

Rugby chiefs are stepping up their bid to get the sport re-admitted to the Olympic Games. Last an Olympic sport at the 1924 Games - America is the reigning champion - top rugby officials hope they can convince the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to bring it back for the 2012 Games. Rugby Sevens is their secret weapon. More global than the 15-man game, a sevens event could be held over two days and would require no specialist facilities, the International Rugby Board says. "The IOC are meeting in Singapore in early July," the IRB's Sevens Tournament Manager Mark Egan said.

Rugby was lobbying for re-inclusion into the Olympic Games for 2012 IOC decision disappoints Rugby world 8 JULY 2005
The International Rugby Board (IRB) believes that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has missed a golden opportunity to modernise the summer Olympic Games sports programme. A vote was undertaken during the 117th IOC Session in Singapore today on whether to change the sports programme for the 2012 Games in London and future Games. The IOC membership voted to exclude two sports, baseball and softball, but disappointingly also decided that no new sports would be added to the London 2012 Olympic Games. Rugby Sevens was on a short-list of five sports for possible inclusion in the Olympic Games had the IOC voted to strengthen the sports programme. "There has been much talk in the sporting world about the need for the Olympic Games to move with the times and be relevant to today's youth, athletes and society. The world around us is evolving at a rapid pace and the Olympic sports programme should reflect this," said IRB President, Dr Syd Millar.

South Africa captain John Smit, a fan of rugby's re-inclusion International stars support Rugby's 2012 Olympic return 20 JUNE 2005
With just two weeks to go before the International Olympic Committee(IOC) votes on whether to modernise the Olympic Games sports programme for 2012, international rugby stars have reiterated their support for the International Rugby Board's call for the sport's return to the Olympic Games. On 8 July in Singapore the IOC membership will decide in an historic vote if the sports programme should be modernised. They will be asked to vote on each of the existing 28 sports in the programme and if any do not receive over 50 percent of the vote they will not participate in the 2012 Olympic Games. If a sport, or sports, is unsuccessful in the vote then the IOC will vote again to decide which new sport(s) from a short list of five will be added to the sports programme. The short-list comprises Rugby Sevens, Squash, Golf, Karate and Roller Sports. Sevens Rugby could be very beneficial for the Olympic Games in terms of spectator appeal, colour and excitement of competition, commercial attractiveness and quality of tournament. The Olympic Games would also be very good for rugby in terms of development and promotion of the game worldwide

Last Updated: Monday, 22 November, 2004, 16:31 GMT E-mail this to a friend Printable version Five up for Games inclusion Golf, rugby union and squash have been included in a shortlist of five sports being considered for the 2012 Olympics.
Karate and roller sports complete the list, while softball, baseball and modern pentathlon could be excluded. "We have sent a questionnaire to the 28 Summer federations represented in the Olympic Games," an IOC spokesman said. "It is all part of an ongoing review of the programme. As part of this process the IOC has decided to include five sports not currently in the Games." IOC president Jacques Rogge has said that no sport can be included without another dropping out. "We'll decide (about new entries) in 2005. Golf, rugby, squash and roller skating are knocking on the door," Rogge told the Corriere della Sera newspaper. "But for every novelty, we will need to give up a discipline. Nothing can be added. The golden numbers are 300 events, 28 sports, 10,400 athletes at most."
