Wheelchair Rugby began in Canada in 1977. Although it is a relatively new sport for people with a disability, it is developing rapidly throughout the world. Wheelchair Rugby is a combination of the pace, regulations and skills required in Basketball and Rugby. The games are held on a basketball ground, and the ball used is similar to the one used in Volleyball. Men and women athletes with a physical disability can participate in Wheelchair Rugby. The athletes are assessed as to their balance and the mobility of the upper part of their body (trunk), the handling of the ball (passing, receiving, dribbling) and the use of the competition wheelchair (fast forward volition, stopping, changing direction). They are graded accordingly.

On For StFX's Name
Photo: StFX Archives By Packy McFarland '56 Over the years the names of the organizing bodies of intercollegiate sport both provincially and nationally have changed many times. For clarity I have used the present designation - CIS for Canadian Interuniversity Sport and AUS for Atlantic University Sport. In writing a brief history of athletics at StFX the difficulty the writer has is that there is so little written about this topic in the early history of the university. From StFX's founding in 1853 until the printing of the first college journal in 1896 is a period of time in which we have very little knowledge of sport at any level. We will never know who the first person was to throw a baseball on campus or who introduced the games of rugby and hockey as a competitive sport. However, when the first edition of the college journal did appear athletics had developed enough to merit a column extolling the importance of a well organized set of outdoor sports and physical exercise. Rugby football was introduced on campus as a varsity sport in 1901 and was the fall sport of choice until 1954 when Canadian football became an intercollegiate sport. Some of the best athletes of the century were seen on StFX rugby teams. Always highly competitive the teams won their share of AUS championships. After 1954, rugby remained as a club sport until the CIS included women's rugby as a sanctioned sport in1998. The X-Women have had a great deal of success winning the AUS rugby championship for five consecutive years and advancing to the national championship in each of those years.

London Calling! Olympic Decision Selects Home Nation of Rugby
Thursday July 07 2005 IRB and World Rugby Spirit Perfect for UK 2012 Games The Olympic decision is in: London, England 2012. You and I know Rugby is the game they play in heaven. But here on earth, the red rose of England is perhaps the most perfect gift the Rugby Gods could have given the sport in regard to its rightful modern Olympic path. Regardless of what city, state, or country Rugby players, fans, or catalysts reside; the logic and history of England 2012 for Rugby Sevens is as good an opportunity as it gets.
New Zealand press is actually positive about the 2012 London Olympic nod. The Kiwis are smart enough to know that UK + Olympics is as positive a combination for Rugby Sevens + Olympics that anyone could ask for. It just makes sense. Rugby could easily be admitted to The Olympic Games program for the 2012 Games at the vote of International Olympic Committee members this month (Reuters). For now, the Rugby world can only wait to see how the Olympic voting goes. Submitted by Baron_Hanson@post.harvard.edu

Swimmers scrape by He and Di Clemente, who Saturday morning fought through lower back pain from previous injuries for their bronze medals, were smiling broadly among the throng as the Boks did their lap of honour with the Tri-Nations trophy. So were Ryk Neethling, Lyndon Ferns and young Darian Townsend who surged with Schoeman in the 4x100 relay for world record gold. Schoeman, who went on to win the 100 freestyle silver and the 50m bronze, had long before left the hotel to relax and reflect on his future. Not surprising, because he speaks for all swimmers, rowers and all athletes who hold the cinderella begging bowl out in the shadow of the wealth of rugby, cricket and soccer. Schoeman emphasised once again that, at 24, he was seriously considering retiring unless he got financial support.

Resource Guide to Sports History
Introduction
It is only in the last twenty years that sport has been appreciated as the stuff of serious history. Sports history grew out of the social history movement of the 1960s that began to look at the past from 'below' by considering the histories of groups, such as women and the working class, that were usually submerged within conventional historical narratives. Although it sometimes struggles for recognition in some of the more traditional echelons of the subject, sports history is now a thriving sub-discipline which produces research that makes important contributions to the social history of Britain and its associated debates and questions. Sports history is not just a matter of looking at how sport reflects society. Sport itself is an active agent in the world we live in and thus the relationship between sport and society is a complex two-way process. The historian Jack Williams (ref: #78) pointed out that more people may have attended religious services or the pictures but no single church or cinema could boast as many as attendees as a professional football match. As such, sport was an integral element of urban life across Britain. History must strive to capture what was important to the people who lived it. Sport, of course, has not mattered to everyone in society, either today or in the past. But the fact that it has been an important part of many people's lives is reason alone to justify its historical study.

Pukpuks get ball rolling
By BONNEY BONSELLA
PNG Rugby Union needs K500,000 to get the Pukpuks to the Rugby World Cup in France in 2007.
Their prayers were partly answered with SP Brewery pumping in K100,000 last night.
The sponsorship will cater for the Pukpuks first hurdle – a one-off Test against Solomon Islands next weekend and another against Vanuatu on Aug 20 in Port Moresby.
PNG Rugby Union President Graham Osborne was delighted with the sponsorship from SP Brewery.
If PNG gets beyond the Melanesian hurdle they would face the winner of the Western Conference comprising Niue, Cook Island and Tahiti.
Beyond that the Pukpuks would have to face another major hurdle in the winner of the test playing countries of Samoa, Tonga and Fiji.
PNG rugby CEO Peter Tsiamalili said the game against Solomon Island is very critical and a positive result would auger well on the road to the World Cup in Oct, 2007.
The Pukpuks conducted one-week training under stand-in coach Billy Rapilla and would play a select Port Moresby side this weekend.
