Formally, rugby union began in Australia with the formation of the first clubs. The oldest of these is the Sydney University Club, which was formed in 1864. By 1874 there were enough clubs to form a Sydney Metropolitan competition and in that year the Southern Rugby Union was established, administered from Twickenham in England. The administration was handed over to New South Wales in 1881 and in 1892 the Southern Rugby Union of New South Wales and the Northern Rugby Union of Queensland (formed in 1883) became New South Wales and Queensland Rugby Unions respectively. Representatives from these two unions combined in 1899 when an Australian team played its first Test series - against a visiting team from the British Isles. Three tests were played, Australia winning the first test at the Sydney Cricket Ground 13-3. The second test in Brisbane and the third in Sydney were won by the British Isles who took out the series. Without a national jersey, the Test matches in New South Wales were played in blue jerseys and in Queensland in maroon - both with the Australian Coat of Arms on their chests.

The Summer Paralympic Games are the ultimate competition for world class elite athletes with a disability and as such are linked to the Olympic Celebration each quadrennium. The Paralympic Games, in terms of complexity, duration and the number of competitors, are second only to the Olympic Games.
The fundamental philosophy guiding the Paralympic movement is that athletes with disabilities should have opportunities to pursue their goals in sport equivalent to those of non-disabled athletes. Athletes who compete in the Paralympics set their sights on the dream of winning a gold medal, are committed to strenuous training regimes and meet strict qualifying standards to be selected to their national team. The Paralympic Games represent a commitment to excellence that allows elite athletes to achieve their personal best. The Paralympic Games exemplify the Olympic ideal of participation and sportsmanship.

US SUPERLEAGUE HISTORY
In 1996 the Rugby Super League was developed as a result of the need for more visibility and higher competitive structure for the sport of rugby throughout the United States. It was created by the management of 14 of the best rugby organizations in the United States. The hope was to create a high level, national rugby competition in America. Now, years later, there can be no doubt Rugby SuperLeague has reached that goal. As the premier division of men's rugby in the United States, the Super League has placed rugby at the fingertips of the American audience. 16 teams represent 13 major markets across the US, and present opportunites for broad exposure of the sport. The Rugby Super League was operational for the 1997 rugby season with two seven club divisions; the Western-Pacific Conference and the Midwestern-East Conference. The orginal members were Belmont Shore (CA), Chicago Lions, Dallas Harlequins, Denver Barbarians, Gentlemen of Aspen, Kansas City Blues (MO), Life (GA), Old Blue (NY), Old Blues (CA), Old Puget Sound Beach (WA), OMBAC (CA) Potomac Athletic Club (DC), San Francisco-Golden Gate, Washington (DC). The league expanded for the 1998 season to include teams from Boston (Boston RFC) and Philadelphia (Philadelphia Whitemarsh RFC) - both joining the Eastern Conference with the Dallas Harlequins moving to the Western Conference. The Rugby Super League is a spring competition, with weekly matches leading to a playoff with quarterfinals, semifinals, and the championship match in June. The 2004 season culminated with the championship match on June 13th in Newport, RI. The 2005 season features a return to the East-West format and a revival of some of the oldest rivalries in US rugby. The 2005 season will kick-off in March and finish with a championship match on June 4th.
