A half century since a team of three athletes travelled to the 1948 games in London with the aim of attaining glory for a small British colony. With the exception of 1960, the last five decades have seen this nation represented in 12 Olympiads with a total of 90 athletes in eight different disciplines: badminton, boxing, cycling, shooting, swimming, track and field, weightlifting and yachting. It wasn't until the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo that Trinidad and Tobago returned to the fold as an independent nation with a team of ten competitors. It was on the athletic track that the greatest prosperity was attained. Edwin Roberts, an outstanding collegian with the University of North Carolina, made it to the final of the 200m where he earned a bronze medal. The 1972 Olympic Games in Munich saw two important records being established. Trinidad and Tobago fielded its largest ever contingent of 20 athletes, among whom a female sprinter, Laura Pierre was included for the first time. Once again, the top performances came on the athletic track.

Almost all precepts of the American game are based upon rugby. The first college football game ever in America, Rutgers vs. Princeton in 1869, was, in fact, rival fraternity brothers having a go at the English schoolboy game of rugby. Basketball too has its roots in rugby. Dr. James Naismith, who declared rugby his first-love, created basketball while searching for ways to train his Illinois football players indoors through the bitter Midwest winters. A true student will quickly recognize that many basketball fundamentals originate from rugby. Rugby has some well-known faces to speak of. Boris Karloff was a standout forward in his native Hungary. Upon moving to Hollywood, he established himself as a terror both on and off the rugby field. In 1935, Karloff founded the Southern California Rugby Football Union, under which 40+ clubs currently compete. Aside from selecting substitutions, and offering a few moments of critique and direction at half-time, a rugby coach has absolutely no mechanism for input into the game once it has begun. He generally takes a seat in the stands. The selected team captain is solely responsible for conferring with the referee, and directing strategic plays. The match is continuous, with all players committed to running, passing, kicking and tackling for the full eighty minutes. Such a sport is peopled by rugged, confident individuals.

At that time the program was not involved with USA Rugby. The team did compete against many of the teams that are in our conference today, such as Brigham Young, Utah State, and the University of Utah. The team also competed against schools in Montana, Washington, and Oregon. However, there was no conference and the playoff system was not in existence at that time. By the time the playoff system was created the ISU program had folded. This happened mainly because the co-organizers of the program graduated and move on and no one was left to continue the program. In the fall of 1996 the program was reinstated and became a charter member of the Inland Pacific Collegiate Conference. The Conference included: Brigham Young, Utah State, University of Utah, Weber State, Boise State, and Idaho State. In 1996 only two (2) players who join the ISU team had any rugby experience. Competing in a conference with teams that had been around for over thirty years was tough. However, the players on that revitalized team never ever quit trying to do their best. There was a pride that developed and this pride has been the foundation of ISU rugby. We have never backed down from playing anyone, no matter who they were. That attitude has helped our program grow. The experience we have received by playing some of the best teams in the nation is the key that has helped our players and program improve each year and to become the team of the future.

Feedback UBC Rugby's First 80 Years Highlights of Varsity Rugby 1906-1985 The precursor to UBC, McGill University College of B.C., offered classes in Vancouver beginning in 1906/07 and continued through to 1915 at which time the University of British Columbia was established. The first rugby team was formed the College's first year, 06/07 and has been a Varsity sport on campus ever since. In fact it was this first year 06/07 and again in 1908/09, McGill B.C. won the Miller Cup, the latter a 6 - 5 victory over Vancouver Athletic Club, placing the students as the top rugby team in the city and for the university the first of many such championships. The 1914/15 McGill College of B.C. team was the first and likely only of our university's teams to register an undefeated and unscored upon season. It went 8 - scoring 144 points while allowing zero points against. The team featured a young Art Lord and captain "Dutch" Eckhardt. Rugby, or at least one form of the game, is said to have been played in Australia since the 1820s, although the first club – the Sydney University Rugby Union Club – was not formed until 1864 with others appearing over the next decade.
