Coubertin was resented by many chauvinistic French sports officials because of his international outlook and because of what was seen as his desire to import English ideas about education into the country. As a result, the 1900 Games almost didn't happen and, when they did happen, they were very poorly organized. Progress began only after Coubertin resigned from the Union of French Athletic Associations (USFSA) in 1899. The USFSA then decided to hold the Olympics in conjunction with the Universal Paris Exhibition of 1900. That led to some absurdities, such as the fencing competition being held as a sort of sideshow in the exhibition's cutlery area. Because there were other sporting events held in connection with the exposition, there was a great deal of confusion about which were Olympic contests and which weren't. Some athletes didn't even know they were taking part in the Olympics, while others thought they were in the Olympics when they really weren't.

Early history
Rugby School Playing football has a long tradition in England and football had probably been played at Rugby School for two hundred years before three boys published the first set of written rules in . The rules had always been determined by the pupils and not the masters and they were frequently modified with each new intake. Rules changes, such as the legality of carrying or running with the ball, were often often agreed shortly before the commencement of a game. There were thus no formal rules for football during the time William Webb Ellis was at the school (1816-1825) and the legendary story of the boy who with a fine disregard for the rules as played in his time, first took the ball in his arms and ran with it in is apocryphal. The story first appeared in

OLYMPIC SPORTS OF THE PAST Sports no longer practiced at the Olympic Games
Tug-of-war

Tug-of-war was on the Olympic programme in 1900, 1904, 1906 (Intercalated Games), 1908, 1912 and 1920. Tug-of-war was always contested as a part of the track and field athletics programme, although it is now considered a separate sport. The Olympic champions were as follows: 1900: a combined Swedish/Danish team; 1904: an American club team representing the Milwaukee Athletic Club; 1906: Germany/Switzerland; 1908: a British team from the City of London Police Club; 1912: Sweden; and 1920: Great Britain.
Golf
Golf has been on the Olympic programme twice, in 1900 and 1904. There were two golf events in 1900 - one for gentlemen and one for ladies. Golf is one of the world's most popular sports, being played in well over 100 nations world-wide. Golf also has a long history, as it origins can be traced back several centuries, and it has had organised international competitions since the mid-19th century. In the last decade golf has made entreaties to be returned to the Olympic programme.
Rugby
Rugby football is one of the earliest forms of football in which the ball is carried rather than kicked. It developed in Great Britain in the mid-19th century. Originally, rugby league was considered the professional sport and rugby union the amateur one, but in 1995 the International Rugby Board made rugby union an open sport, allowing professional competition. Rugby union football was held at the Olympics in 1900, 1908, 1920 and 1924.

Art competitions were held from to at the Olympic Games . The competitions were an idea of Pierre de Fr©dy, Baron de Coubertin , founder of the modern Olympic Movement. Medals were awarded in five areas: architecture literature music painting , and sculpture , to works of art inspired by sport The art competitions were abandoned in because artists were contended to be professionals, while Olympic athletes were required to be amateurs. History
Pierre de Coubertin conceived the idea of Olympic art contests. With the founding of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in , and the celebration of the first modern Olympic Games French Baron Pierre de Coubertin saw his ideals — men being educated in both mind and body, and competing in sport rather than war — fulfilled. One of his other desires was to combine both art and sport, and he thus considered including artistic competition in the Olympic Games. In May , Baron de Coubertin organised a meeting in Paris for both IOC members and representatives of organisations of artists. The meeting ended with a proposal to the IOC to organise artistic competitions at the Olympic Games in five areas (architecture, literature, music, painting, and sculpture). The works of art entered had to be inspired by sports.

Holmes 'stunned' Papers: Triumphs hailed ... Kelly's triumph Kelly Holmes ran another perfect race to take a wonderful 1500m gold and make Olympic history in Athens. Holmes, who won 800m gold on Monday, set a new British record with 3 minutes 57.90 seconds when it mattered most. She becomes the first Briton for 84 years to achieve the Olympic middle-distance double. Holmes sprinted down the home straight to finish three metres clear of Russia's Tatyana Tomashova, with Romania's Maria Cioncin in bronze. "I can't believe it - I'm gobsmacked," Holmes said afterwards. Academy: We trace Kelly's steps to Olympic glory "After the 800m I had a lot of confidence and I was feeling good going through the rounds, but these girls are really good and I had to focus more than ever in that race. "I was trying to place myself in the right position and put myself where I had to make a move.

Home Training Schedule Sevens ... Contacts Olympic Club Rugby – A Legacy of Excellence Rugby is yet another fine example of the Olympic Club’s inherent commitment to foster amateur athletics. The history of rugby at the Club is a rich one. The Winged “O” ruggers have helped to expand the Olympic Club’s reputation for athletic excellence around the world. The rugby story began in 1880s when Edgar Pomeroy, an Englishman, helped introduce the sport of rugby to the Bay Area. Edgar felt that the game was superior to American-style football and lobbied for the high schools and colleges to adopt rugby instead. In 1906, over concerns about injuries, rugby actually did replace football. From 1907-1914, rugby was played in the “Big Game” between Stanford and Cal. Pomeroy joined the Olympic Club in 1907 and went on to be one of the most enthusiastic devotees to sport that has ever been connected to the Club. In addition to being a player, commissioner, author and supporter of rugby for 50 years, Edgar was also recognized as the father of soccer in the Bay Area. In 1908, with the “enthusiastic support” of Club President William F. Humphrey and the board of directors, the rugby team was launched at the OC with Douglas Erskine as its first commissioner. The schedule for the Olympic Club the first year included Cal, Stanford, University of Pacific and the Barbarian rugby club. It didn’t long take for the Winged “O” ruggers to excel as they won the local club championship in 1909.
