Hooked Rugs
by
Ellie Beck
When I was a child we frequently visited the home of my parents' friends, Joe and Florence Schneider. After saying hello, the next thing I did was run upstairs to the boys' rooms to see if there were any new toys. While going up the stairs I enjoyed looking at the "pictures" on the risers of the stair runner that Florence had hooked. Each riser had a different self designed depiction of something from their lives. I loved it.

The Story of Rug Hooking
by Deanne Fitzpatrick As practical as it was it was also a means of self expression, as well as a past time for after the work was done. Both my father and my mother talked about how their own mothers loved to work on the mat. For my father hooked mats were a reminder of his mother in the kitchen by the comfort of the stove where she kept her mat "bars" or frame. She was known in the community of Paradise, Newfoundland, for her ability to draw mat patterns. She would take a piece of charred wood from the fire and draw a design onto an old feed bag. Often she would draw on patterns for other women in the community to hook. As my uncle described,"She’d draw a boat, with a house and a path going up to it." When she ran out of old clothes to hook she would take a part the brin(burlap) bag strand by strand, dye them and hook several strands together onto another brin bags. Rug hooking never disappeared in North America. For years it continued on under the radar of popular culture. It has endured as craft, and is developing as an art. There are many active guilds, and individuals through out North America who have ensured that rug hooking, or mat making as it was referred to in Atlantic Canada, continues to thrive and grow.Basic Instructions for Hooking the Mat

by Leigh and Leslie Keno hen we were growing up, half our house was heated with woodstoves in winter, so the trick was to get from the bedroom to the kitchen by hopping from one hooked rug to another without touching the freezing floorboards with our bare feet. Several of these rugs dated back to the mid-19th century, when rug hooking was not only a household chore but a favorite pastime, especially for frugal Yankee women. It was a way for them to recycle clothing remnants, provide warmth underfoot, and express themselves artistically with designs depicting animals, landscapes, patriotic themes, floral motifs, and geometric patterns, in a wide range of colors. Today these early American hooked rugs are more likely to be found hanging on the wall than lying on the floor, as a growing appreciation for such handcrafted folk art has made them increasingly valuable.
Crafted from Scraps
The rage for rug hooking cooled toward the turn of the century as a growing middle class replaced the quaint homemade rugs with modern factory-produced carpets. Rug hooking then enjoyed a Depression-era revival. Pastel clothing, popular in the early 20th century, sometimes ended up in rugs made in the 1920s and '30s.

The Rug Hooking Project
at Las Manitas Avenue Cafe, 211 Congress Avenue, Austin, TX 78701
Opening December 4, 2004, 6-8 pm I n the small village of Agustin Gonzales, 21 women spend what little free time they have hooking rugs. You will find them working late at night by kitchen tables after children are asleep or perhaps you will see them sitting under a tree in the hillside tending the cows and working on their rugs. Their subject matter is the life around them, mountains, cactus, cows, horses, burros, flowers, a small house, a church, ducks, rabbits, chickens, roosters or fish. Each art piece is entirely unique as is the skill of rug hooking in Mexico. Five years ago Mary Kay, a Canadian, became involved in the volunteer organization "Mujeres en Cambio" (Women in Change) while visiting in San Miguel de Allende. This organization is dedicated to the empowerment of women. Their first project began in 1994 providing scholarships to girls who could not afford to continue their education past the 6th grade. Secondary education is not free in Mexico. While visiting the young girls' school, she noticed the elegant crocheting and embroidery of the mothers. Mary Kay had been hooking rugs for many years and thought that these women had the ability to learn this craft unique to Mexico. She took on the task of teaching them. For the next 3 years she visited every winter and taught the women how to hook rugs.

Darlene Bryan
By LIZ HEITZMAN of the Tribune’s staff Published Sunday, March 13, 2005 It was business that brought Darlene Bryan to the estate sale of Margaret Hunt Masters more than 10 years ago. Don Shrubshell photo At the time, Bryan and her son ran a store in Columbia called Barnloft Antiques. She was looking over the items of Masters’ life, looking for pieces of furniture or memorabilia that might sell at the store. But it wasn’t a curio or vanity that caught her eye that day. It was Masters’ amazing rugs. Called hooked rugs, the pieces were handcrafted using dyed pieces of wool. Like a painting, it was the composition and Masters’ use of color that attracted her. Bryan wanted to buy one of the rugs, but with prices beginning at $2,500, she decided they were out of her league - and not likely to sell in the store. At a more modest price, Bryan impulsively bought a table full of Masters’ tools of the trade: a wool cutter, scraps of material, old magazines on rug hooking and half-finished rugs.
