Hooked On Rugs
Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-151

Executive producer Gary Grossman drops by to share his enthusiasm for rug hooking, a hobby with which he became involved by obtaining a kit and simply reading the instructions. For this episode, he has brought along a rug that he is making for his daughter. He designs rugs with his wife, and he especially enjoys one aspect of this pasttime: He can hook while watching television, especially football games!
Using Gary's rug as her sample, Carol uses the rug hooking tool to demonstrate how to easily hook and knot the yarn. She reminds us that color stamped on the canvas will indicate what color yarn is to be used.

The Utilitarian Treasures of the 19th Century, braided and hooked rugs provided comfort and beauty to many homes.
Authored by: Vickie Rumble May not be reprinted without permission While the craft of rug hooking has been practiced for centuries it was two Union veterans from Maine who contributed more to its advancement than anyone throughout the ages. These men made it possible for anyone to liven up their homes with a beautiful hooked rug.
The following passage was found in an 1857 Sunday School book which was printed in Pennsylvania. It describes how women in the mid-1800's turned scraps from the rag bag into coverings for both bed and floor which were not only utilitarian but often quite attractive. "The bed-quilt was made of patch-work; little bits of bright calico were sewed into the form of stars and then quilted into white pieces that filled up the space between them. The floor was clean and bare; but in front of the bed lay a large oval rug, made of strips of woollen cloth carefully braided, and then sewed together. Bed-quilt and rug both made of rags, and yet so very nice and pretty!"
Both braiding and hooking of rugs provided a barrier between cold floors. The craft of rug hooking can be traced back to the sixth century when it was practiced by the Copts (ancestors of the ancient Egyptians). An example of a rug from this period is housed in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

El Dorado, KS The Art of Rug Hooking "T he Art of Rug Hooking . . . El Dorado and area artists" will be on display at the Coutts Museum of Art through September 27, 2000. A special reception for the artists and a public viewing will be held at the museum Saturday, September 9 from noon - 2:00 p.m. Many people have long seen and admired hooked rugs without the least idea of how they are made. It has only been recently that rug hooking has received the long-overdue recognition from museums, galleries and the public it deserves as a rich part of our heritage. But more importantly, not only is appreciation growing for hooked pieces made in the folk art tradition but the craft itself is being revived as a means of self-expression. (left: Marge Ward, Mother Goose, wool hooked rug, 1997) Rug hooking reached a creative peak in early nineteenth-century America (in both New England and the Canadian Maritime Provinces), although both skilled and unskilled hookers were handicapped by a basic lack of materials and had to rely on their ingenuity. Before the availability of burlap (after 1850), feed sacks were frequently used as foundation material. The fabric to be hooked into the foundation came primarily from clothing no longer usable; the materials were washed, sorted and then colored in homemade dyes extracted from local plants (golden rod, sumac, sunflowers, wild grapes, walnuts and other plants). The dyed materials were then cut into narrow strips to be worked into the foundation using hooks made from nails, bone handled forks, or whatever else was available.

The Winedale rug hooking Seminar is designed to teach participants to hook rugs as rug hooking classes begin Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 830 am
http://www.cah.utexas.edu/divisions/Winedale/hooking.html
th Annual Traditional Rug-Hooking Seminar, May 16-19, 2001
Instructor: Cynthia Norwood, Seabrook, Texas
The Winedale Rug Hooking Seminar is designed to teach participants to hook rugs as they were made in the 1800s by pulling wool fabric strips (not yarn) through a burlap base with a tool similar to a crochet hook. Continuous loops turn new and old wool into rugs, pillows or wall hangings. Create your own design or hook a primitive, floral, geometric, or pictorial pattern. The seminar instructor is Cynthia Norwood of Seabrook, Texas. The seminar schedule is designed so participants may attend as many days as they desire. We recommended that beginners attend at least two days for the best experience. The seminar accommodates both beginners and experienced rug hookers at the same time. The Wednesday workshop is reserved for dyeing, which is open to beginners as well as experienced rug hookers. Even if you never intend to dye your own fabric, you will enjoy seeing color theory in action. Rug Hooking classes begin Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Instruction will include: 1. introduction of hooking techniques, equipment, and material
