Hand crafted in the rich folk tradition, these elegant hooked rugs and wall hangings provide a rich, thick texture you'll treasure for years. I use only the finest wool cut into strips, then worked into loops with a traditional rug hook through heavy cotton backing. Select the colors, shape, size and type of pattern you desire and I'll work with you to create a most elegant rug or accent piece. You'll find hooked rugs complement a spectrum of decors...from classic to contemporary, even primitive. Adorn floors, walls, or furnishings-in your home or office-with your custom made work of art! Rug Hooking Wool
    Full Yard Increments
Continuous Yardage 1/2 Yard Pre-cut Pieces What Wool is Right for Rug Hooking? Buying Wool for Rug Hooking The original hooked rugs were created using recycled wool usually from deconstructed garments. However since the advent of synthetic fibers, there are fewer outgrown and worn out wool garments in our closets. Today, the craft of rug hooking is heavily reliant on new wool. "As a general rule weights of 5.5 oz. to 10 oz. per square yard are suitable for rug hooking." Weight The weight of the wool chosen for rug hooking is important not only for the "look" of the finished product but for the "ease" of actually creating the loops. Wool flannels and wool suitings usually retain their soft hand and firmness after fulling. Most wool coating has a thickness and/or napped finish that makes it prohibitively heavy after fulling. While beautiful, a wool challis is usually too lightweight and flimsy even after several fulling treatments. Denverfabrics.com has invested in sophisticated equipment to determine the per square yard weight of each fabric we sell.

Thank you, Sheila Klugescheid Well recognized rug Design of Heartland Creations) What is Rug Hooking There are many theories about the origin of Rug Hooking. Some believe that it dates back to the medieval days where rugs were used as bed coverings, others believe that it started with the Egyptians or, even the craft has its roots in the Orient. Where ever or how ever old, the one thing that most everyone will agree on is, that it got its start on this continent by about the 1800's in the Maritimes and New England. The art of Rug Hooking was a great pastime for sea faring men at sea to while away time and for women settlers to cover cold earth floors in very early homes. These rugs where created by drawing a pattern on feed sacs and then they would cut old worn out clothing into strips and use a hook fashioned out of an old knife or nail to pull the strips up through the back of the sack to form a looped pile.

    Fabulous hand hooked rugs!
Rug hooking is an easy way to create decorative art for your home. Learn the traditional craft of rug making and fill your home with beauty!
Rug hooking is a traditional American art that has recently seen a resurgence. Hand hooked rugs sell in department stores and specialty shops with large price tags. But their current value belies their humble beginnings. Originally hooked rugs were made of clothing scraps cut into strips and pulled through burlap sacking in which they had purchased potatoes or other foodstuffs. Creative housewives would hook the fabric into colorful patterns or pictures of the things in their daily lives. Animals and flowers were popular decorative themes. The resulting rugs were used to warm floors in the winter time and to add some color to the rooms. Sometimes you can find antique hooked rugs with price tags of several hundred dollars. The process of rug hooking is simple enough to learn in an evening, but the variations in fabric, technique and design keep many a craftsperson captivated! Begin with simple tools, such as those our ancestors may have used. If you want to get more involved in the craft, you can upgrade to specialized tools. Basic tools you need are: 1. A simple drawing to use as a pattern. This can be as simple as a triangle on a blank field, or more complex like a wreath of flowers.

Recently, she has taken a keen interest in rug hooking using hand dyed wool. She creates original patterns and only the best of materials. The background on this page was created from her very first project which I am very proud to say she gave to me as one of my treasured memories of our Minnesota weekend in December, 1996. It is about ten inches square with a loft of about a half-inch. It looks terrific on our dining room table under whatever centerpiece the season calls for.

A FEW LOOPS OF HOOKED RUG HISTORY
    by Tracy Jamar
The technique of pulling a loop of one fiber through a woven foundation has probably been done since the earliest manipulations of textiles. Examples of the technique can be seen in 4th century. Egyptian textiles where remnants of wool tufts were pulled through a linen base. Various sources attribute the Scandinavians during the Bronze Age of practicing the technique and passing it along to the British Isles and onward to the Canadian Maritime Provinces and the Northeastern United States. That said, rug hooking (1) as we know it today has been practiced for fewer than 200 years. Whatever the source of origin, it is clear that hooked rugs developed, flourished and blossomed into an amazing variety of styles in northeast North America. Though the making of hooked rugs has now spread around the world they might almost be considered indigenous to the NE of North America.
Before 1780, in America most floors were bare, especially among the poor. The better off may have decorated their floors with paint, stenciling, painted floor cloths or even sand swept into designs. Only the wealthy would have had the means to own imported carpeting, as the domestic textile industry was in its infancy. It wouldn't get fully underway until the second quarter of the 19th century, so most of the goods were imported from England.
