CHEMICAL RUBE GOLDBERG PROJECT
The criteria for the 1999 projects listed below. PROBLEM: Through a series of energy exchanges in a time closest to 3 minutes the machine will produce a gas causing a change in the color of a solution.
CRITERIA:
  • Each machine will have a minimum of 10 energy exchanges; at least 5 of these changes will be chemical and 5 will be physical. If the same energy exchanges are used, point deduction will be considered. The time requirement for the problem to be accomplished is 3 minutes. The energy used to start the machine will not be considered as one of the energy exchanges in the machine. Points will be deducted for excess stored energy (i.e. batteries). Points will be added for the use of alternative energy sources. Points will be given for a creativity to the problem solution.

SAFETY: A preliminary written schematic design will be submitted to be approved. Students will be required to calculate and/or determine the quantitative information concerning any reaction being considered in the machine. After the initial study of the involved reactions have been completed and approved, lab tests may be run. All tests will be using small amounts of chemicals.
DUE DATE:
  • Presentations will be during the finals period.

Finding it a bit confusing, a little intimidating? Afraid that you can't pull your weight in the unfamiliar environment of conferences, working groups, process action teams and other various 'adhocracies' that make the Army run? Don't feel bad, newbie, I've been there. After years enjoying the simple, Spartan pleasures of troop units, we all end up here. It's tough, but the secret is learning the language. If you can learn the lingo well enough to employ it in your PowerPoint slides, you'll find that everything else becomes easy. Competence, substance, even coherence fade in importance against the ability to brief smoothly-not to mention that the language of higher headquarters reduces the strain of original thought and all but eliminates the need for critical analysis.

Complex Machines, Simple Goal
by Donna Jones Pelkie What can you make with an old faucet, a broken lamp, ball bearings, bike parts, plastic bottles, string, PVC pipes and a lot of duct tape? Something that can empty dead batteries from a flashlight, replace them with new ones and turn on the flashlight. Or, more simply, a Rube Goldberg Machine. But simple is not what these machines are all about. While the Morgan Park team is an all-volunteer group, students from suburban Riverside-Brookfield High School participate in the contest as part of their class curriculum. Teacher Zak Knott requires his honors physics students to build Rube Goldberg machines as a class assignment. Knott holds an in-school run-off competition, and the winning machine enters the Argonne contest. The day of the school run-off, it became obvious that for some students what started out as a just another homework assignment had become something they really wanted to work well.

20. Instructional Strategies Online - Science Fairs
A science fair is an exhibition of student science projects designed to showcase Having older students get involved in building a rube goldberg model
http://olc.spsd.sk.ca/DE/PD/instr/strats/sciencefairs/
What are Science Fairs? A science fair is an exhibition of student science projects designed to showcase their learning in all areas of science. The science projects are an investigation using the scientific method to discover the answer to a scientific problem. Science Fairs are great activities for students at all grade levels. At the younger grades, the teacher may choose to do science fair projects as a class whereas at the older grade levels, individual projects are encouraged. What is its purpose? The purposes of a science fair are many and varied. They are a great opportunity for staff and students to work together on a school wide project and showcase their work to parents and the community. In addition, they are great vehicles for teaching cooperation (most science fair projects are done with a partner) and the scientific method. Finally they are an opportunity for students to hone both their writing and presentation skills How can I do it?
