Diana, Princess of Wales
paparazzi . The life and death of the Princess of Wales, is, indeed, a monument to sad contradictions and ironies. Diana's married life revolved around her official Court duties and, increasingly, her own public causes. Ten days after her twenty-first birthday, the princess gave birth to the next heir apparent, Prince William, and, two years later, to Prince Henry (known as Harry). She insisted on taking her young sons on "normal" outings to cinemas and theme parks and on informal holidays abroad, and she bestowed lavish affection on them in public. Her conduct represented a sharp break from the stiff conventions of royalty and contributed to her position as the media's darling and to the discomfiture of her less demonstrative mother-in-law. On the one hand, Diana seemed determined to protect her sons from the harsh glare of public scrutiny; on the other, she kept the people abreast of the family's life by granting interviews and making numerous public appearances. She fed the media's hunger even while expressing despair at its persistence. By the mid-1980s, rumors of a rift between Charles and Diana were growing, accompanied by whispers of infidelity and reports that the princess was far from well or happy. By the end of the decade, it was public knowledge that Diana was suffering from bulimia, a fact that she courageously admitted in public in hopes of helping other sufferers; that Charles had resumed his long-standing love affair with Mrs. Camilla Parker-Bowles early in his marriage; and that Diana had sought solace in an affair with an army officer named James Hewitt, who co-operated in a scandalous tell-all book about their relationship.

Sir William Phips STUCK IN A FRAME
Phips was born on a farm on the Kennebec, the youngest of 26 children. He never attended school. After having learned carpentry, young William walked to Boston to seek his fortune. He was not in Boston for long before he befriended a ship's captain, Roger Spencer. Spencer had a daughter, Mary. Mary had married John Hull, a ship builder, who died while Mary was still yet a young woman. William Phips was to marry her. And thus we can see, how, at a comparatively young age, Phips was to become a captain of a trading sloop carrying codfish and pineboards to the West Indies and molasses in return. For such treasure hunting, Phips knew he would need some heavy backing. He went to England. In his typical way, Phips was soon to find the right people to talk to and found the right things to say. His various audiences led to the very top, to no less than the king of England, Charles the 2nd. Intrigued, Charles set Phips up with a Royal Naval frigate, the Rose of Algier , 18 guns and manned by 95 English tars. With his new command, and after calling by at Boston, in February of 1684, Phips was soon engaged sounding the waters of the Ambrogian Shoals. He did not meet with immediate success. Prior to the discovery of the treasure, long days and hot sun got to the crew and he had his hands full trying to keep everybody enthused; indeed, at one point he called into a Caribbean port, Port Royal, Jamaica, and discharged the lot of them and picked up a new crew. Having not found what he was looking for Phips returned to England. The crown, however, had lost interest and was no longer interested in speaking to Phips, this wild colonial dreamer. In London, Phips went from one moneyed person to another trying to sell his dream (at one point he was thrown into prison). Finally, Phips and his tale of sunken Spanish treasure was to take hold; a company was formed. Phips was fitted out and returned to the Caribbean in two ships

... BAROQUE COMPOSERS' PORTRAIT GALLERY BAROQUE MUSIC: historical and geographical context. Given the difficulties of travel and communication two centuries ago, it might easily be assumed that composers would know relatively little of other composers and other countries. Nothing could be farther from the truth! Travel by stage-coach may have been lengthy, and probably only for the well-to-do. But the many post-coach monuments still to be found in Germany, with their journey timings between towns precise down to one-eighth of an hour attest to the high degree of organization and reliability in this mode of travel. Music-making was highly prized by many of the princely and kingly courts, and leading musicians would often be financed for their journeys to bring back the latest styles and compositions. During the first half of the 1700s, German music adopted the Italian forms of the concerto and sonata, and with them, much of the Italian baroque "vocabulary" together with the latest Italian compositions. ITALY Many eminent composers of the baroque period, notably Handel for example, sojourned in Rome, and Corelli's influence was to spread itself throughout Europe. Rome was of course also featured on the Grand Tour, which the wealthy of Europe and especially England were enjoying in increasing numbers during the 1700s.
