The New Zealand Rowing team are now back from a hugely successfully regatta at the 2004 Athens Olympics. The highlight being Georgina and Caroline Evers-Swindell's gold medal effort in the womens double, an outstanding effort by two very deserving athletes. All NZ crews made their respective finals, something NZ Rowing has never achieved before and though the rowers are disappointed not to have also made it to the medal dias they certainly proved their mettle against the best in the world.

Background
Rowing is a sport that helps achieve a total body workout. Rowing takes place in a rowing "shell" a long, narrow and very light boat holding either one, two, four or eight participants. The shells are only slightly wider than a person's shoulders and about ten inches deep and are propelled by oars on each side. In a "eights" shell, there are four oars on the each side, one for each rower. Each rower sits on a sliding seat, with their feet strapped to the boat, to exert their full force to pull the oar back and push the boat. Competitive rowers race at the pace of a four minute mile through water
The rowing action is as follows:
  • The rower reaches forward with the oar, arms fully extended
  • The oar is placed in the water (the "catch")
  • The rower pushes with legs first to pull the oar towards them
  • The stroke is finished by pulling the oar into the chest, just below the ribs, at which time the oar is pulled out of the water
  • The rower then pulls forward on the sliding seat to prepare for the next stroke
In an eight person or 4 person shell, the coxwain, steers the boat and instructs the rowers on their rowing pace.

More than 300 children and adults added rowing to their recreational experiences in 2002 thanks to the Yale Community Rowing Program which completed five weeks of "summer camp" at the beautiful Gilder Boat House on the Housatonic River in Derby. The Yale staff under the capable direction of Jamie Snider conducted sessions for younger children, high school aged youth and even a special program for adults. The program has been offered every year since. In 2005, there are more than 700 children and adults participating in the program. Gilder Boat House
The special programs introduced participants to the sport of rowing through the use of land based ergometers before advancing to specially constructed training barges and graduating to racing shells including the recently dedicated Hazel Knapp . On the last day of instruction, participants even had the opportunity to race the shells against each other.

Try on-water rowing this summer at one the summer camps listed below! If you've never rowed on the water, we encourage you to give it a try sometime. Yes, there are complications - like the potential for flipping over, the potential for bad weather, the bother of motorboat wakes - but the exhilaration of feeling the boat move under your own power is well worth it. One way to try rowing is to go to summer camp. You may even be able to bring the whole family - depending on which camp you choose. Here is our 8th annual listing of the Summer Rowing Camps of which we are aware. If you know of any camps that you think we should add to our list, please mail or e-mail the information to Judy's attention at judyg@concept2.com .
