The short ride demonstrated that total focus is required, for several reasons. First, you must match the rowing cadence of all the other crew members, and the cadence can vary, such as on starts: half-stroke, half-stroke, three-quarters, full.  Secondly, to reduce wind resistance on the "recovery" or return part of each stroke, the rower must turn the oar so the blade is parallel, or flat, to the surface of the water. On the drive segment of the stroke, the blade must bite the water at the proper depth. Too deep wastes energy; too shallow wastes power.  During and after the stroke, the seat in the boat slides as the rower's body extends and compacts, and this must also be timed precisely.
