Rowing as an exercise
As an exercise, rowing has been voted one of the most effective total body workouts possible. Taken to the water in the form of recreational rowing, it is a totally healthy and positive experience. People of all ages can enjoy this form of low impact exercise. Rowing as a crew teaches teambuilding and discipline in the best sense. The aerobic conditioning developed through the exercise of rowing leads directly to better heart and respiratory condition, a better ability to deal with daily stresses and the opportunity to share a genuinely healthy experience with family and friends.

March 26, 1998 Recreational rowing: Crewing and sculling are making a splash By GREG JOHNSTON
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER What would make eight adult women eager to wake before dawn three days each week and work out almost until they're weary often in cold, wet and windy weather? Fitness and good health, for sure. But more importantly, an intense camaraderie created by the interdependence of a crew. And a lighter-than-air feeling captured fleetingly. "It's total synchronicity, eight people all together," explains Mari Jalbing, 47, a member of the Seattle Yacht Club's women's crew. "It's a very elusive feeling, but once you've experienced it, it makes up for 1,000 bad rows. "It feels effortless. You have the feeling of flying. Your blade cuts the water at the exact same time as everyone else's."

March 26, 1998 Recreational rowing: (page 2) Demanding workout and building team spirit are key to crewing Recently, the yacht club crew allowed a rowing rookie to join them during a morning session, which typically begins well before dawn because the water is usually calmest in the early hours and other boat traffic is light. The short ride demonstrated that total focus is required, for several reasons. First, you must match the rowing cadence of all the other crew members, and the cadence can vary, such as on starts: half-stroke, half-stroke, three-quarters, full. Secondly, to reduce wind resistance on the "recovery" or return part of each stroke, the rower must turn the oar so the blade is parallel, or flat, to the surface of the water. On the drive segment of the stroke, the blade must bite the water at the proper depth. Too deep wastes energy; too shallow wastes power. During and after the stroke, the seat in the boat slides as the rower's body extends and compacts, and this must also be timed precisely.

We have roughly an equal number of men and women of all ages who enjoy rowing or sculling in all sizes of boats whenever they can.. The Rec Squad is the ideal place for members that like to enjoy the exercise, without causing their lungs and heart to burn in the process!

The Cadence Wristrate Watch from NK is the latest in stroke rate and performance monitors. A full-featured digital sports watch, it can also be quickly and easily strapped onto a sculling or sweep oar for wireless stroke rate measurement. The patented tilt-switch technology calculates stroke rate based on the feathering interval. There are no wires to install, making the Cadence an especially great tool for rowers who use different boats. For the coach or spectator, the Cadence offers a large, dedicated rate button right on the face, allowing easy rate measurement at any time. It's even possible to take rates with one hand by simulating the feathering motion with the watch hand - great when driving a launch. Add-in a 100-hour, 99-split chronograph, alarm, and smart auto-adjusting day/date calendar, and you have the complete rower's timepiece. Rate Meter:

Whether your interest is canoeing or ice skating, baseball or in-line skating, the Charles River is a beautiful resource. Since 1893, the Metropolitan District Commission has preserved the region's unique landscapes by acquiring and protecting park lands, river corridors and coastal areas; reclaiming and restoring abused and neglected sites, and setting aside areas of great scenic beauty for the recreation and health of the region's residents. Click here to see more information about specific activities within the Reservation. Charles River Dam
The Charles River Dam, located behind the Fleet Center, controls the water level in the river basin. An earlier dam, located beneath the Museum of Science , was completed in 1910 with the purpose of creating a fresh water river basin and river front park in Boston. The newly landscaped banks of the river became known as the Charles River Esplanade. The later dam, completed in 1978, houses six pumps that provide flood control protection. The dam's lock system permits travel of recreational craft from the river to the harbor year round. A fish ladder allows for passage of anadromous fish (alewife herring, rainbow smelt and shad) during the migration season in late spring. Regularly scheduled tours are available.
