Home About President's Message History ... Facilities Programs Open Masters/Pre-Masters Juniors Recreational/Novice ... Miscellaneous History Rowing clubs, as we know them today, first appeared in London in the late 18th century. Two of these early clubs, the Star and the Arrow, merged after a few years into the Leander Boat Club, which is still a prestigious and active rowing club whose boathouse is now located near the finish of the famous Henley-on-Thames race course. The popularity of recreational sports grew rapidly in the early 19th century and rowing was foremost among them.
By the 1820’s rowing clubs existed on the east coast of in the U.S. and began to spread westward. The west coast’s first rowing club was founded in Vancouver, British Columbia in the 1860’s and within a few years clubs were started in San Francisco. Still active are Southend (1873) and Dolphin (1877). It took only another decade for the sport to reach the small community in Southern California called San Diego.
In 1888 a group of San Diegans formed the Excelsior Rowing and Swim Club. At that time the town was in the midst of a population boom and the number of residents had reached about 14,000, up from only 2,600 people in 1880. Rowing was then one of the most popular sports, and competitive rowing events, along with boxing and horse racing, drew very large crowds and fostered extensive wagering.

DRC PROGRAMS
Competitive Rowing The competitive program at the DRC is considered to be a high performance category of rowing. To compete at this level requires a year-round commitment, with six training sessions each week during the winter. During the summer racing season, twelve to fourteen workouts can be common. The competitive program is for individuals 16 years of age and older. Whether junior, intermediate, senior or masters, DRC oarswomen and oarsmen have always been a strong presence in Ontario. Annual Fee: $630 (plus two Bingos)
University Fee: $480 (plus 2 Bingos completed before Henley)
The University Fee is available to rowers who will only be at the club from May to August and who can provide proof of current enrollment and fall registration. Spaces are limited. IT'S OOMPA-TIME
Masters Rowing Some can't stop it, others start late in life. This program provides mature athletes (age 27 and over) with the opportunity to retain their competitive edge. Master rowers compete against each other in events and age categories designated by the international rowing federation (F.I.S.A.). In order to participate, you must have previous rowing experience, be able to withstand the physical demands of regular workouts and make a dependable commitment for early morning (5 – 7 a.m.) practices and weekend regattas. Annual Fee: $630 (plus 2 Bingos) Recreational Rowing There is life without competitive rowing. To join this program you must be at least 16 years old and have prior rowing experience, or have passed the "Learn to Row" program at Dons or another club.

Kataram r o w i n g f o r e v e r y b o d y A single sculling boat that combines the speed of a skiff with the stability of a catamaran. The unsinkable VirusBoats Kataram is almost impossible to overturn. Quick and manoeuvrable the Kataram is also practical. Very lightweight, it is easy to put into the water and it can be readily transported on a car. VirusBoats Rowing Sculls
Fast, affordable recreational sculls. With its stable platform the VIRUSBOATS Kataram is suitable even for the disabled to learn rowing. A sliding wing rigger linked to the foot stretcher replaces the traditional sliding seat and fixed rigger. The sliding wing virtually eliminates pitching created by weight transfer, which is especially important for a short boat. Why a catamaran?
For a boat to be fast it has to be narrow. Unfortunately with single hulled boats this means that the boat becomes less and less stable, the narrower it gets. Also, the narrower a boat is made, the longer it must be for the boat's volume to be adequate to support the weight of the rower without sinking. The length of the boat helps to minimise the pitching of the boat as the rower slides fore and aft on the traditional sliding seat. But the long thin shape has the disadvantage of a large wetted surface area, which leads to increased hull friction with the water.
The solution to these problems is to have two short narrow hulls side by side in a catamaran arrangement.

Turbo Skiff f a s t a n d s o p h i s t i c a t e d A single rowing scull built for speed in a stunning, sleek design. With minimum practice, even the novice can harness the power of the stable VirusBoats Turbo Skiff SL. A sliding wing rigger linked to the foot stretcher replaces the traditional sliding seat and fixed rigger. "Turbo" mechanics concentrate the rower's efforts for maximum propulsion. VirusBoats Rowing Sculls Fast, affordable recreational sculls. The sliding wing virtually eliminates pitching created by weight transfer resulting in a smooth, almost frictionless glide. How is it so fast?
The Turbo Skiff was designed after the Yole as a single rather than a double. This meant it could be made narrower and thus faster. But a short narrow boat tends to pitch fore and aft so VirusBoats used an idea that had been discovered by the racing community - the sliding rigger . This keeps the weight of the rower in the middle of the boat so the boat no longer pitches thus reducing drag.
But it has another advantage. The conventional arrangement, where the rower slides fore and aft on a sliding seat in order to take advantage of the power of the legs, produces an oscillation in hull speed above and below the average speed of the boat. The extra drag at higher speeds is not equally compensated for by the reduced drag at lower speeds so the boat with a sliding seat is not as fast as it could be. However, the sliding rigger arrangement greatly reduces this oscillation in hull speed. Hence the speed of the Turbo Skiff.

The Sliding rigger in Practice
Animation comparing the action of the sliding seat with the sliding rigger
Large version
What are the advantages of a sliding rigger over a sliding seat?
One of the most important skills in competitive sculling is handling the recovery, from release to catch, during which you move your body aft in the boat while your oars are out in the water. Good scullers manage to get their hands out of the flow, follow with their torso and finally pull themselves smoothly aft with their feet without greatly checking the boat's run through the water. No matter how well this is done, however, the momentum of a human body moving aft has a significant impact on the boat when all that weight has to stop and start forward again.
Technical Aspects of the Sliding Rigger
Not only does the rowers momentum work against the boat's run it works against the power transmitted to the oars. A portion, small but measurable, of the rower's power goes to starting and stopping his or her body. When the rower weighs 180 pounds and the sliding rigger mechanism weighs only eight pounds, it takes a lot less power to accelerate the rigger than the rower's body, leaving more energy for the oar.
