document.writeln(''); History of Rowing in Cleveland
Did you know that rowing was the first sport ever played between colleges in the US? In 1852 the first intercollegiate sports competition in the nation's history took place when Harvard raced Yale. Three years later, the sport of rowing came to the mighty Cuyahoga. The Ivanhoe Boat Club and its Captain George W. Gardner were on the river in 1855 using shells built in Cleveland. The event stirred up local interest in such a unique use of our waterways that the Plain Dealer, in an article dated July 5th, 1855, offered a challenge to other crews: "We hope next 4th of July, 1856, to have the pleasure of seeing a "Regatta on the Lake" between boats built here, and manned by Cleveland Boatman; and we do now promise a Silver Cup worth one hundred dollars to the victorious Club boat on that occasion." However, the initial days of rowing were numbered due to the increased commercial traffic brought on by growth and the Civil War...and the fragile racing craft were crowded off the river. Organized rowing, sadly, did not reappear for another 125 years. In 1986, five gentlemen, who had either moved to Cleveland from the East Coast or had rowing experience from colleges in the East, began sculling on the Cuyahoga. They rented space for their shells and called themselves the "Cuyahoga Rowing Association."

Two thousand years ago, the Greeks discovered rowing with oars was better and faster than paddling. Rowing was used primarily for transporting warships and cargo boats until racing became popular in England and the United States. In fact, rowing was the first intercollegiate sporting event in the United States. In 1852 - 23 years after the first Oxford-Cambridge race in England - Harvard beat Yale in a two-mile race on a lake in New Hampshire. The historic competitions and boat clubs that started 150 years ago are still thriving, and rowing has also become a year-round activity for men and women who want to stay fit and have fun. There are more than 500 organizations for novices to professionals, and most health clubs have indoor rowing machines for people who want a low-impact workout that exercises all of the major muscle groups. The Club is not Milwaukee's first or only rowing club. In the late 19 th Century there was an earlier club called the Milwaukee Boat Club and other rowing clubs. LOCATION Until it burned in 1961, the Club boathouse was located at the east end of the North Avenue dam. The Club then moved to the former Downer College boathouse in Hubbard Park until that burned in 1989. After that fire, the Club moved below the dam to its present location at 1990 North Commerce Street, less than a mile from its original site. Construction of the new boathouse was completed in 2003 as part of the Beerline River Homes and River Court development ORGANIZATION AND FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLE The Club is a member organization of the United States Rowing Association, the national governing body for Olympic rowing, one of the original Olympic sports of the modern era.

Rowing for Recreation
The main reason for using the FrontRower is for the recreational value. Recreation should be an interesting and enjoyable change of pace from everyday life. For many of us, this means being outdoors and involves physical activity, changing scenery, and a chance to relax. Quiet exploration of lakes, rivers, coastal bays and harbors in a small boat can satisfy all of these needs. That's why paddling a canoe or kayak is popular recreation in certain areas. But using a paddle limits the amount of power that can be easily generated. This limits the wind and current a paddler can handle. And it limits the distance he or she can travel in a given amount of time. And it makes bringing a passenger along difficult. Rowing with a pair of oars allows you to generate more power more efficiently. But rowing a boat facing backward can be impractical in areas where navigation hazards are present. The FrontRower combines the best characteristics of both systems. It gives you the power of a pair of oars in a comfortable forward facing position.

FrontRower forward facing rowing system
Prism solo canoe makes a very efficient touring row boat.
Exercise you can look forward to!
The Frontrower is a new type of rowing system that goes forward, uses your arms or legs (or both) for power, and fits in most canoes. Installed in your canoe, you have the practical forward-facing position of paddling, combined with the power and exercise quality of full body rowing. This opens up a new type of recreational/fitness activity enjoyable touring of rivers, lakes, and coastal waters while getting high-quality exercise. Canoes make excellent touring rowboats. They are more portable and easier to row than utility type rowboats and more stable and easier to maneuver than racing type shells.
Is the FrontRower easy to use?
Yes! It’s so easy you can row it “no hands”, using just your feet. The oars lift, feather, and return to the front automatically. You steer by taking longer strokes on one side. You can use your hands for other things like casting a fishing line, taking pictures, or eating a snack while you are cruising along. Or you can row with just your hands. Or you can row with your hands and feet combined. This is similar to rear-facing sliding-seat rowing or “sculling”, but is much easier
