Recreational Rowing Shells
The Rec-Racer III Top View
History of the Rec-Racer II and Rec-Racer III:
The Durham Boat Company began importing the original Rec-Racer in 1984 and that proved to be a very speedy and popular boat. Initially we imported the entire boat. Gradually we moved to purchasing and installing all the hardware, to the point now where we manufacture all the major sub-assemblies that go into making the boat. We manufacture the foot stretchers, seats, and riggers on the top-of-the-line boats as well as install all other hardware and custom rig the boat. In 1994, we changed the design to slightly increase its maximum capacity, while further improving on its speed and rowing efficiency. The changes have been very well received. In 1995 and 1996, the boat was used in the Blackburn Challenge. (i.e., approximately 20 mile race around Cape Ann, near Glouster, MA in open water conditions) Both years a course record was set, beating all manufacturers of recreational rowing shells. With the addition of our own all carbon sub-assemblies we have provided equal or better rigging than one would find on top line racing singles. Through extensive use of the boats in our own sculling school and club, we have over the years received much valuable feedback as how best to improve upon equipment design and optimize boat set-up and rigging. We are confident that we have designed the boat so that the rower feels comfortable in the boat, yet still have enough feedback from the boat so as to not develop bad habits from rowing a boat that is too forgiving.

Sprint
Design Your Own Rowing Shell The number one, most asked question by those both new and old to the sport of rowing is ... "Where can I find the ideal entry level, open water rowing shell"? Little River Marine has responded to your quest, and added the SPRINT to our complete line of recreational rowing craft. By design, the SPRINT offers all the features you should look for in an introductory craft, such as: Stability
A "must" characteristic that insures the novice of a sure-handed row, and the veterans of a safe and comforting row. With a little "trick of the trade," you can even let go of the oars, which may encourage taking that fishing pole on your next row. Seaworthiness
It's very rewarding to know that the SPRINT can challenge most any rowable condition, and get you home dry. The high reverse splashrails are designed to turn away any wave your bow dips into. They surround the enclosed cockpit and together are your guarantee to tackling rougher waters. Even a sloping rear deck was added to ship out any water that dares to enter. By knowing this, you can't sink or swamp this shell, which also makes it one of the safest rowing shells on the market today.

Cambridge
Design Your Own Rowing Shell Hot off the press, the Cambridge is our newest design in modern rowing technology, It was conceived, designed, and built as a direct result of what today's educated rower wants out of "recreational" rowing. It needs to be:
  • Light enough for one person to carry or cartop by themselves (men and women), yet rugged enough to still be considered "recreational".
  • Stable enough to handle those rough water days, yet it will get up and go when the water's like glass.
  • A "user friendly" shell to accommodate your learning curves, yet can be fine tuned as your skills improve. Since the introduction of the Cambridge it has fast become one of the most sought after rowing shells offered today.
Over the past 15 years, Little River has been the leader in advancements in hull design for recreational shells. The latest in performance design theory can be seen in the Cambridge, where we've incorporated a flared "U" shaped beam - the result is two-fold. When the water is smooth, there is a small, more optimum waterline for greater speed. But when the water gets choppy, the beam increases, which creates a more stable craft and a more comfortable row. We call it "reserve stability" - it's there when you need it, it's not when you don't. Add to this the rocker keel (minimum drag at optimum hull speed) and high performance integral rigging as found on our more advanced shells (

The Fort Worth Rowing Club (FWRC) became a member organization of the United States Rowing Association (USRA) in January 1991. The FWRC joins fellow clubs in Austin, Dallas, Houston, The Woodlands, Oklahoma City, and Tulsa (just to name a few close by) in promoting rowing for fun and sport. The USRA provides many vital functions for the member organizations like sanctioning regattas, training judges and coaches, maintaining safety procedures and providing a communications link. The Fort Worth Rowing Club rows on the Trinity River from the Beach Street boathouse east of downtown Fort Worth. While some members of the rowing club train to participate in masters rowing events in Texas and at the national level, others simply enjoy the beauty and seclusion of the Trinity River. The rowing club promotes rowing for recreation and fitness, and is open to members of all ages. The general purpose of the FWRC is to promote rowing in the Fort Worth area. More specifically, the goals of the club are to establish and/or support: the Boy Scout Rowing program, a FWRC boathouse with equipment, local college/high school rowing programs, and regattas to bring visitors to Fort Worth. Typically, members from FWRC attend three spring regattas (1000M sprints), and two or three fall headraces (1.5 to 3 miles) and host a regatta in the local area. The Club has provided hands-on demonstrations and training at local Boy Scout camps.
