Recreational Rowing at Star Club
Star Club recognises the increasing interest in rowing as a good basis for general fitness among people who want to enjoy themselves while improving and maintaining their health. Rowing offers a basis for exercising most of the major muscle groups in a gentle way, improving suppleness and is especially beneficial for cardiovascular fitness. It offers individual and team based activity in an open air setting at all times of the year. Many of the recreational rowers start as adults of all ages and may not have pursued a regular sport before trying rowing. Members progress at their own desired pace and are helped and steered by the many qualified coaches at Star Club. The club has a policy of encouraging members of all ages to gain coaching qualifications and to give support to the rowing members. Some of the recreational rowers may have been active oarsmen and women in the past and have returned to enjoy their rowing but not to follow a strict training plan as they might have at one time. Many other recreational rowers have been attracted to join as parents of Junior members and have continued to enjoy an active part in Club life. Mixed groups sometimes arrange to form crews on a Sunday morning or Summer evening, perhaps to keep fit but always for the sheer pleasure of gentle exercise with friends on an attractive stretch of the River Great Ouse. Outings are typically rounded off in the Club with coffee and snacks or a drink at the Bar. Others may prefer to go out in single sculls and work at their own pace.

About Rowing Index Popular from the coast of Maine to the Harbor of Hong Kong and everywhere in between, recreational rowing is open to rowers of all age groups and skill levels. Recreational rowers row for a variety of reasons - for fitness, for fun, or just to take in the sunrise on a crisp Autumn morning. There are a number of "recreational" races, however, sponsored by local towns as well as the Alden Ocean Shell Society. These races are often competitive tours of local waterways, designed to promote the sport of rowing. Though some recreational rowers choose to row in the narrower competitive racing shells, many perfer to cruise in wider, more stable, "rec shells." Be a Sport - send David Nielsen feedback!
