Olympic knowledge can only go so far

If NBC Sports president Dick Ebersol dared to walk through downtown Bristol, Conn., this week, he definitely would have needed some sort of restraining device. Yes, somehow in the said sports capital of the universe, we discovered the following:
  • President Clinton is the head of the Olympics;
  • Lenny Krayzelburg was a German pole vaulter;
  • The Olympic logo has three rings;
  • And the word "repechage," that rowing fans have been hearing for the past week, was actually the French word for pancakes. In the most unscientific of Olympic studies, 16 people were interviewed in front of two supermarkets. We'll protect the guilty by only revealing their first names. 1. What network is the Olympics on?
    Patty: "CBS. That I did know because I've seen all the commercials." Darrell: "CNN, right?" Todd: "Fox because nobody watches it." Answer: Actually guys, it's on NBC.

    Degree Speeches Sum mer 2001 Sir Steven Redgrave, CBE and Lady Ann Redgrave Public Orator, Professor Stuart Biddle, presented the Honorary Graduands at the Degree Congregation held on the morning of Monday 16 July 2001 Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Lord Lieutenant, Graduants, Ladies and Gentlemen These achievements are remarkable enough in their own right. Rowing is one of the most demanding of sports, mentally and physically. However, Sir Steven nearly missed the Atlanta Olympics due to serious illness, and in 1997 was diagnosed with diabetes, requiring several injections each day. To achieve such unprecedented sporting success, in such a demanding sport, and under such circumstances, is, simply, incredible. Loughborough University has an unrivalled reputation in sport. It, too, has been associated with -one might say produced - Olympic gold medallists and world record holders and world leaders in performance, coaching, and managerial leadership in sport. We believe in sport in the fullest sense, hence our moto for Loughborough Sport -Developing People, Developing Sport. Today, we are honouring two outstanding people in the field of sport who have developed themselves -in synergy -and developed British sport to truly great heights. They represent the best in achievement. Mr Chancellor, for her work in sport and sports medicine, I have the honour to present to you, and to the whole University, DR ANN REDGRAVE for the degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa.

    Three-time Olympian Dr. Roger Jackson Selected to Lead Summer Sport Excellence Program TORONTO, May 10, 2005 – Dr. Roger Jackson, a sport leader and three-time Olympian in Rowing, has been selected as the Program Director to develop a summer sport program to help Canada’s athletes achieve podium success at upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games.
    Similar to its winter sport counterpart, Own the Podium – 2010, the summer sport program is a collaborative effort by all summer National Sport Federations (NSFs) and their funding partners including the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), Sport Canada, the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC), and the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC).
    "The summer Olympic and Paralympic excellence program promises to be a unifying force for the entire summer sport community," said Anne Merklinger, Director General, Canadian Canoe Association-Whitewater Canada. "We have come together as a team and created a clear vision for the future that will allow for a significant increase in performance by summer sport at future Olympic and Paralympic Games."
    "I am very excited to help create the summer Olympic and Paralympic excellence program," said Dr. Jackson, currently Chairman of the Board of the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport. Children from Beckie's hometown of Vermilion, Alberta piled into buses for the long drive to Calgary to watch their hometown hero receive her new medal. The media, including CBC Newsworld, which carried the medal ceremony live, caught Beckie's bright smile on camera as the youngsters and Beckie's many supporters persuaded her to climb atop the podium.
    "I'm extremely honoured that this special event was organized in Canada for my second Olympic medal ceremony," said Beckie. "This is a tremendous opportunity for all Canadians to celebrate this sporting achievement again. The Olympic Sport of Edgecrafting
    I am not planning on watching much of the Athens Olympics televised by NBC. Why not? Well, NBC’s coverage of the major sports and Olympic events like Gymnastics, Swimming, Basketball, and the Opening/Closing ceremonies is too sanitized, too slick, too expected, and too commoditized (i.e. lowest common denominator) for me. However, I do plan to watch the “edgecraft” sports being televised on Bravo, CNBC, MSNBC, and USA cable channels. Televising uncommon but common sports like Badminton, Table Tennis, Field Hockey, Water Polo, and Archery is classic Seth Godin Edgecrafting SETH GODIN EDGECRAFTING REFRESHER COURSE
    As detailed in Free Prize Inside , Edgecrafting is about going to the “edges” to find innovation. On the outer edges, one finds the out-of-the-ordinary which can be deemed extreme, offbeat, captivating, and downright remarkable. These remarkable goings-on may be far from being mainstream, but they are definitely worthy of talking about. And discovering talk value is where edgecrafting crafts Free Prizes.

    What they found was, shall we say, interesting. The shortcomings used to justify the removal of baseball, softball and modern pentathlon three years ago exist to varying degrees in 11 other sports: canoe-kayak, archery, rowing, wrestling, shooting, judo, handball, table tennis, weightlifting, taekwondo and fencing. Even more are still open to question.
    There is right now in the IOC a massive lobbying effort underway as federations plead with IOC members to support their sport in Singapore. This is far more than Jacques Rogge ever bargained for when he started this process. More on that later.

Stacey Borgman, a 1998 graduate of Barnard College, advanced to the semifinals in the Lightweight Women's Double Sculls, while Milos Tomic and Veljko Urosevic moved into the semifinals in the Lightweight Men's Four. Like Borgman, Urosevic is a former Columbia rower, graduating in 2003, but Tomic would have been a junior during the past season if he had not taken a year's leave of absence in order to train. Borgman teamed with Lisa Schlenker in the two-oared shell. Rowing in the Repechage (second chance) Round, the pair nearly won the race, only to be nipped at the end by two Polish rowers, with a duo from Denmark gaining third. All three nations advanced to the semifinals, where they will vie with crews from Canada, China, Great Britain, Greece, The Netherlands, and Spain.

    Former Buckeye rower leads U.S. eights to Olympic gold
    By Edward Mauler Published: Tuesday, August 24, 2004 Setting a world record in a semi-final heat at the Olympic games in Athens, former Ohio State rower Bryan Volpenhein must have known he and his fellow rowing teammates were destined to strike Olympic gold in the finals.
    On Sunday, the U.S. men's rowing team did fulfill its destiny as it sailed past the Netherlands' team with a time of 5:42.48 - winning the first gold for the men's eight-member rowing team since 1964. This came after the record-setting performance by the U.S. rowers in the semi-finals where Volpenhein and his teammates shattered the world record with a time of 5:19.85.
    "We knew that they were coming and that they would have a good sprint," Volpenhein said about the Dutch rowers the U.S. team beat by 1.27 seconds for the gold, according to an official Olympics press release.

    August 22, 2004 ATHENS Could this be the year they finally hit the double after four Olympiads of emptiness? The US men's and women's eights may not have come here favored, but after both set world-best times in last weekend's heats, they could win two gold medals in this morning's finals at the man-made course at Schinias. ADVERTISEMENT That has never happened at Olympus, where the big American boats have foundered at recent Games. The women haven't won gold since 1984, when the Soviets, East Germans, and Bulgarians all boycotted. The men haven't done it since Philadelphia's Vesper club crew prevailed in the Tokyo gloaming in 1964. In fact, the American women haven't even made the podium since 1984, placing last at three of the last four Games. And the men haven't managed it since 1988, when they won bronze in Seoul with current coach Mike Teti rowing bow. In Sydney, the US males came in as three-time world champions, then slogged home fifth. This time, there are no such expectations, which frees them to chase favored Canada, which has won the last two global crowns. Still, the men are expected to win something here, after finishing second and third at the world regatta the last two years and rowing through the Canadians in the heats.

    Farewell to Athens
    Every Olympic Games provides us with defining moments. Some are obvious - like Cathy Freeman's golden run in Sydney and Muhammad Ali's lighting of the cauldron in Atlanta. Others are a matter of personal preference. Athens was no different. In almost every sport there were memories to cherish. From the feats of Ian Thorpe Michael Phelps and Jodie Henry in the pool to unforgettable victories by Kelly Holmes and Hicham El Guerrouj on the track, every winner had a story to tell. And so did most of the losers. Losers like Jana Pittman , Wilson Kipketer and Alex Popov, who weren't losers at all, but were winners without gold medals. For the Greeks, these Games were a triumph. Not because they were the best ever, but because in the main, they went without a hitch. Because, despite the doubters, they opened on schedule, and because - perhaps against all odds in today's world - for a little more than two weeks they recaptured the spirit of the ancient Olympics. The centrepiece of these Games was the thoroughly modern stadium with its Santiago Calatrava-designed roof.

In the context of sports rowing or sculling is a system of competition that refines the rowing of boats into a specialized discipline. In the United States , high school and collegiate rowing are also sometimes known as crew It is a speed sport in narrow boats, where the athlete sits on a sliding seat above the water level and faces backwards, using oars to move the boat. This may be done on a river , a lake , or on the sea There are two forms of rowing:
    • In sweep-oar rowing, each rower has only one oar and holds it with both hands. In sweep boats each rower is either port (strokeside in the UK) or starboard (bowside in the UK) which refers to whether his oar extends to the port or starboard side of the boat. In sculling , each rower has two oars (one in each hand), and because of this symmetry the rowers are not referred to as "port" or "starboard."
