    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Extreme Ironing (or EI ) is an extreme sport in which people take an ironing board to a remote location and iron a few items of clothing Starch irons atop Rivelin Needle near Sheffield England Extreme ironing locations include a mountainside of a difficult climb ; a forest ; in a canoe ; while skiing or snowboarding ; on top of large bronze statues; in the middle of a street; even when free-diving , though this possibly defeats the purpose of ironing. The ironing itself has variations: either solo or in a group; ironing in existing formations or freestyle. EI supposedly combines the excitement of an extreme sport with the satisfaction of freshly ironed clothes. Though it seems a parody or hoax, many extreme ironers take their sport quite seriously. The Guardian said of extreme ironing that it carries on a tradition of British eccentricity. Many organised EI events are now sponsored by the household appliance manufacturer Rowenta

In the context of sports rowing or sculling is a system of competition that refines the rowing of boats into a specialized discipline. In the United States , high school and collegiate rowing are also sometimes known as crew It is a speed sport in narrow boats, where the athlete sits on a sliding seat above the water level and faces backwards, using oars to move the boat. This may be done on a river , a lake , or on the sea There are two forms of rowing:
    • In sweep-oar rowing, each rower has only one oar and holds it with both hands. In sweep boats each rower is either port (strokeside in the UK) or starboard (bowside in the UK) which refers to whether his oar extends to the port or starboard side of the boat. In sculling , each rower has two oars (one in each hand), and because of this symmetry the rowers are not referred to as "port" or "starboard."

Last Updated: Saturday, August 21, 2004. 6:11pm (AEST) World champions Australia have won gold in the men's coxless pair at the Athens Olympics, to give 39-year-old James Tomkins his third Olympic gold and Drew Ginn, 29, his second. The Australians, renowned for their long, elegant style, beat Croatia' Skelin brothers by half a length. South Africa finished with the bronze medal. The popular Australians were given a rousing welcome onto the medal podium. "When we were on the finish line we were pretty emotional about it," Ginn said. "It's been eight long years and four years in which we had planned for this day. And to be able to go out there and put on a perfect race is really, really satisfying." Ginn and Tomkins, members of the original "oarsome foursome", drew out a length lead in the first 1,000 metres of the race and held on at the finish. Tomkins won gold in the four in 1992 and with Ginn again in a four in 1996. He took bronze in 2000 in a scratch crew after Ginn pulled out prior to the Games with a back injury.

It is reported that when rescued by his coach, he said that he had become dizzy, which caused him to tip out. The cause of death has not yet been reported." (From a rec.sport.rowing posting). It appears Kiran (a national champion) collapsed while being rescued and stopped breathing before the paramedics arrived.

Venue: Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith Lakes The outlook
While a record 51 countries qualified for Sydney, the United States is the only one to send a full contingent of 14 boats and 48 athletes. Australia and Germany each are sending 10 boats. U.S. hopes for gold are highest in the men's eight, an event Americans dominated from 1900-56 but haven't won since 1964. U.S. crews have won the last three world championships. The Sydney crew will include four men who were on all three boats and four more who were on the last two. The only newcomer is Dave Simon, a sophomore at Brown. Britain's Steve Redgrave, who won gold at the past four Olympics, is switching from coxless pairs to the coxless four, an event won in 1992 and 1996 by the crew known as Australia's Oarsome Foursome. The finer points
Equipment: In rowing, the competitor faces the rear of the boat and wields an oar that pivots in an oarlock, which acts like a fulcrum. The boats are called shells, with a subclassification of sculls. All sculls are shells, but not all shells are sculls. In a scull, each crew member rows with two oars, one on either side, called sculling oars. Other shells have one oar, a sweep oar, per crew member. The sweep rower pulls his oar with both hands as he rows on one side of the boat; the rower next in line rows on the opposite side. Certain crew configurations may or may not include an extra member, called a coxswain (pronounced cox'n), who does not row but uses a rudder to steer and also coaches the rowers.
