MILAN, Italy Six crews will have the opportunity to qualify the United States for the Olympic Games in their boat classes on Friday at the 2003 World Championships on the Idroscalo in Milan, Italy. In addition to crowning the world’s best in each of the 24 disciplines, this week’s world championships serve as the initial qualifier for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, as 130 of the 202 boat spots will be determined. Rowers in the 14 Olympic-class boats are fighting for their countries’ Olympic berth in each of the disciplines. Countries that do not qualify in a particular category in Milan will have a second chance to qualify for the Games early next summer. The qualifier is for country slots only and does not qualify individual rowers for the Olympic Games.

Dear Campers and Parents, The Raritan Valley Rowing Camp has enjoyed enormous success over the past several years. Now in our 15th season, the camp has evolved into the most popular and respected program of its kind in the country. The outstanding coaching staff from the premier high school and college programs, the top rate equipment, and the variety of additional activities have made the Raritan Valley Rowing Camp a truly special place. Our philosophy has always been to maintain the highest level of instruction while creating a challenging and, most of all, fun environment. Limiting the number of campers each session has allowed our staff to get to know each camper individually, and give each one the attention, help, and motivation to succeed in our sport. The small groups also allow each camper the opportunity to row in small boats and scull, very important skills to improve overall technique and performance. This year, we will have even more small boats and sculling boats, including three quadruple sculls.

The result came down to a photo finish, with the British boat winning the gold by a razor-thin margin of .08 seconds. The victory marked the fourth straight gold medal for veteran British stroke Matthew Pinsent at a Summer Games. Italy captured bronze in the six-boat field at the Schinias Olympic Rowing and Canoeing Centre.

Olympic exposure pays for Urbach
Vancouver sculler won lightweight women's final at national trials on Fanshawe Lake By KATHY RUMLESKI London Free Press

Being around the excellence of Olympic athletes all day rubbed off on Liz Urbach. The Vancouver native won the lightweight women's single sculls final yesterday at the national rowing trials, covering the 2,000-metre Fanshawe Lake course in seven minutes, 47.40 seconds. The win landed her a spot on the Canadian team that will remain at the lake to train for the world championships in Japan in August. The first thing Urbach planned to do was send a text message to her friends on the 2010 Vancouver Olympic organizing committee. She worked for the committee during the bid process and more recently with the vice-president of planning and services. Urbach said she felt motivated to train hard by her daily association with some of the top athletes Canada has produced.

Remove the ones where winning the olympic medal isn't the high point of your career
[vote for against Basically, the number of olympic sports is just getting silly. And, there are a whole load of them where there is a world cup (or equivalent tournament) which is more prestigious than winning the olympic title (football is a case in point). So, we just remove these sports and leave the ones (e.g. athletics, swimming) where the olympic title is what people really care about. vincebowdren , Feb 08 2002 motto interpretation? http://www.halfbake...dea/Anabolympics_3f fits the 'higher' criteria [ chud , Feb 25 2002, last modified Oct 05 2004] Olympics would gain by returning to old ways http://www.usatoday...020225/3890387s.htm bristolz , Feb 25 2002, last modified Oct 05 2004] link I think you'll find that the other sports you mention (and presumably others inferred) have similar tournament level competition that carries the same level of meaning as your football example (guessing you're referring to World Cup non-US 'football' there) to the competitors. Those events just aren't as news-worthy (sports-worthy?) and have a lower profile than others, but they exist. They compete more than once every four years, you know.

... Discuss No one's celebrating this silver anniversary 04:22 AM CDT on Tuesday, July 19, 2005 Shot putter Sammy Walker had been training with Michael Carter for the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games when Walker got word that the United States would be staying home. "When I heard Carter was leading the boycott, I thought they meant Michael Carter," Walker said Monday. "I thought, 'What? Michael boycotting?' When they said President Carter, it blew my mind." Today marks 25 years since the Moscow Games opening ceremony. Walker, a former SMU football player and shot putter who finished ninth in weightlifting at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, is not alone in voicing his regrets for what might have been in 1980. "My whole life, I had trained for this meet," said Kurt Thomas, who was coming off a six-medal performance at the 1979 World Gymnastics Championships in Fort Worth. "I was very disappointed. A lot of us were very bitter."

UPS Olympic Sports Legacy delivers athletic inspiration to children in Romania and Russia
-Global Programme Encourages Youth Participation in Olympic Sports
BRUSSELS, July 18, 2000 - Continuing its global Olympic Sports Legacy programme into 2000-2001, UPS will donate over 4,000 pieces of sports equipment to selected children's sports associations, schools and orphanages in Russia and Romania. To identify exact needs, UPS is working with World Vision, a charity running a collection of orphanages all over Romania, and the Moscow Sports Committee's amateur sports associations.
UPS will deliver the equipment, which includes tennis rackets, basketballs, football boots and judo suits, at special delivery events on July 18 in Moscow and on July 20 in Bucharest. Famous local athletes such as Viacheslav Ivanov, three times Olympic champion in rowing, and Bogdan Stelea, goalkeeper for the national Romanian soccer team, will attend the events and give tips on playing their sports and how to use the equipment correctly. Children from the organisations will actively participate in the events by helping to present the equipment and demonstrate its use.
From Bucharest to Sydney, UPS has helped more than 220,000 children in 10 countries foster dreams of becoming Olympic athletes by securing and delivering much needed sports equipment to children's charities and sports programs. The multi-million dollar program was launched by UPS in 1998 as an extension of UPS' worldwide Olympic partnership. To date, the UPS Olympic Sports Legacy has donated in excess of 600,000 pieces of sports equipment.
