SA's first rowing Olympic medal
Brad Morgan 23 August 2004 While Donovan Cech and Ramon Di Clemente won South Africa's first rowing Olympic medal on the weekend, taking third in the 2 000m pairs, swimmer Roland Schoeman captured his third medal of the Games, bronze in the 50m freestyle, making him one of the most successful South Africans in Olympic history. Schoeman went into the semi-finals of the freestyle sprint having recorded the fastest time in the semi-finals of 21.99. In the final, however, he didn't enjoy the advantage he usually gets from the start, as Jason Lezak very nearly matched him. Ultimately, though, it was defending champion Gary Hall junior and Duje Draganja who got the better of the South African ace. The American clocked 21.93 to steal gold ahead of Draganja, who recorded 21.94. Schoeman finished in 22.02. The third place finish means Schoeman collected a medal of each colour at Athens 2004 - he also took gold in the 4x100 freestyle relay and silver for the 100 metres freestyle.

Rowing is a highly developed and popular sport in many countries. It combines a graceful spectacle with sharp competition. The field of play takes place in a natural scenic environment, such as a lake, river or a canal, which adds to the allure of rowing.  Watching the sport once, either in person or on television, turns almost anyone into an avid fan of the sport. The long and narrow boats, the colourful oars, the synchronised crews - ranging from one to eight athletes - are all ingredients for a very successful mix. This combination creates an exciting sport to watch and cheer on for spectators.   Description In Olympic rowing 14 different boat classes are raced, eight sculling events in which two oars are used, one in each hand and six sweep-oared events in which the rower uses one oar with both hands. The sculling boat classes are the single, the double and the quadruple sculls with crews of one, two or four athletes respectively, as well as the lightweight double. The sweep row categories include the pair, the four, the lightweight four (for men only) and the eight with coxswain, which is perhaps the most spectacular rowing event of all. For the lightweight events (the lightweight women's double and the lightweight men's double and four) the average weight of a men's crew must not exceed 70 kg for women, the average weight of a crew must not exceed 57 kg. All races cover a distance of 2,000 metres.

A Brief History of Rowing This section should provide those of you new to rowing (and indeed any of you experienced rowers who are simply ignorant to the sport's makeup!) an idea of the rowing structure in the modern day, as well as giving you a brief outline of the origins of the sport and its social history. Modern day rowing is a highly professional and competitive sport which is carried out from school and club level nationally, right through to Olympic level. The body which oversees all of this world-wide is the FISA . This group is responsible for the majority of the international regattas such as the world championships and world cup meetings. In this country the governing body is the Amateur Rowing Association (ARA) . The majority of clubs in this country are affiliated to the ARA who organise regattas all over the country which contribute to national league tables. This makes up the vast majority of the British rowing calendar. However outside of this are various smaller organisations examples of which are the Coastal Amateur Rowing Association (CARA), and the University Rowing League . They organise their own regattas and leagues not overseen by the ARA, although largely using ARA rules as guidelines.

Hawkes Bays Emma Twigg was the first New Zealander to qualify in the women's single scull by dominating her semi-final from start to finish.
Facing a slight head breeze, Twigg took control of the race with an explosive start to establish a three boat length lead by the 1000m mark. She maintained her rhythm over the second half of the race, rating a lowly 26 strokes per minute to win the fastest semi-final in a time of 8:28.
Twigg's competition in tomorrows final will come from second semi-final winner Jullein Clementine (8:29) of France.

Former Badger Rowers Going To Olympics
POSTED: 4:34 pm EDT July 8, 2004 MADISON, Wis. Two former Badger rowers have been chosen for the U.S. team in Athens this summer. Former Badger rowing captains Beau Hoopman and Matt Smith will row in the 2004 Olympic Summer Games Aug. 14-22. Former Badger rower Matt Imes will serve as an assistant coach for the team. Hoopman, of Plymouth, Wis., will compete with the men’s eight. Smith, of Woodbridge, Va., will race with the men's lightweight four. Hoopman captained the Badgers during the 2001-02 season, helping the Badger varsity eight to its first Eastern Sprints title since 1946 and a runner-up result in the national championship race. He won gold at the 2002 Under-23 World Championships in Genoa, Italy in the men’s eight and most recently a gold in the men’s four at the 2004 BearingPoint Rowing World Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland. “I’m happy,” Hoopman said. “I’m trying to keep it on the down low because we still have to race. This is just the first step. We have a good chance to do really well. We have a bunch of good guys in the boat so we will see what happens.”
