  • OK, this is getting silly. Gold for Redgrave and cohort yesterday, silver (the first women's Olympic rowing medal) for the women's quad today in the tightest of finishes, and finally, to round off the regatta, gold for all nine of the British men's eight, beating the rest of the big boys at their own game, peaking at exactly the right time after silver last year and defeats this summer. Three rowing medals, thirteen Olympic champions and four Olympic runners up, our best result for decades. Huge congratulations to everybody involved, (and a particular well done from RQ to Guin, to Tim, and to Rowley, Fred and Ben H-D).

  • Redgrave does it : it was fast, hard, and agonisingly close. Gold for the truly awesome foursome and their inimitable coach. Below is the real-time-written report, and here is Chris Dodd's report on the day that made history:

SA's first rowing Olympic medal
Brad Morgan 23 August 2004 While Donovan Cech and Ramon Di Clemente won South Africa's first rowing Olympic medal on the weekend, taking third in the 2 000m pairs, swimmer Roland Schoeman captured his third medal of the Games, bronze in the 50m freestyle, making him one of the most successful South Africans in Olympic history. Schoeman went into the semi-finals of the freestyle sprint having recorded the fastest time in the semi-finals of 21.99. In the final, however, he didn't enjoy the advantage he usually gets from the start, as Jason Lezak very nearly matched him. Ultimately, though, it was defending champion Gary Hall junior and Duje Draganja who got the better of the South African ace. The American clocked 21.93 to steal gold ahead of Draganja, who recorded 21.94. Schoeman finished in 22.02. The third place finish means Schoeman collected a medal of each colour at Athens 2004 - he also took gold in the 4x100 freestyle relay and silver for the 100 metres freestyle.

History
Only four sports have been in every modern Olympics. Rowing would be a fifth, but all five events scheduled in 1896 were cancelled because of bad weather. However, the rowing events did come off in 1900, and the sport has been a staple of the Olympic program ever since. Women's rowing was added in 1976 and lightweight events joined the program in 1996. All Olympic rowing competition has the same basic format, beginning with qualifying heats. The fastest qualifiers go into the semifinal and the others enter a repechage round. The top repechage finishers also advance to the semifinal. The first six semifinal finishers race in the final and the next six enter a petit final, for 7th through 12th places. The confusion of the Paris Games seriously damaged the Olympic movement, and the 1904 games almost killed it. Chicago was originally selected as the host, but St. Louis officials feared that the Olympics would cut into attendance at the World Fair. They threatened to hold athletic competitions in conjunction with the fair if the Olympic Games weren't moved to St. Louis. The IOC finally decided to let President Theodore Roosevelt arbitrate the question, and he chose St. Louis. The IOC went along with that. European tension caused by the Russo-Japanese War and the difficulty of getting to St. Louis kept many of the world's top athletes away. There were only 687 competitors, most of them from the United States, though Canada sent a good-sized contingent. Only 12 countries were represented. In a number of sports, the U. S. national championship was combined with the Olympic championship, because there were no competitors from other nations. The United States won 80 of the 100 gold medals and 238 of the 300 total medals.

GOLD AND GLORY BY A WHISKER And, apart from the monolithic achievement and national celebration, it was a great race. To the heart of it: the British coxless four took the lead immediately with a trademark start, they were technically excellent and prodigiously powerful as their stroke rates went from zero to nearly 50 a minute and their pulses from 50 to nearly 200. By the 250m mark, Steve Redgrave, aiming to make history at the age of 38 with his last Olympic effort, was already certain of victory. A half-length advantage had been secured, every attack could be fought off. Celebration: the coxless four team of Matthew Pinsent, delivering a post-race hug for teammate Steve Redgrave, and James Cracknell after their historic Olympic gold. Photograph: Ross Kinniard Redgrave had no illusions. As he said in deadpan understatement: "Olympic gold medals are never easy." And although he felt some frustration that the pursuers weren't having the good sense and decency to give up the chase, he was never in doubt. In the stroke seat, Matthew Pinsent was also satisfied to see the field spread out behind him on the almost-still waters of Penrith Lakes: "The 1,000m mark came and we pulled away, and I thought we were saying bye-bye to them all, but they dug in, and all credit to them."

A Proud Tradition Rutgers Olympic History In the Beginning In 1864, rowing became the first organized sport at Rutgers. Initially, six mile intramural races and races against the town were held on the Raritan River among crews in six-oared boats. Rowing was a very popular sport at the school and received much attention, including daily articles in the school newspaper, the Targum. In 1870, Rutgers raced in its first intercollegiate competition, against the Lawrence Scientific School of Harvard, then the top-ranked amateur crew of the time. Unfortunately, the Scarlet Crew was narrowly defeated in the three-mile race from the Albany Street Bridge to Landing Lane and back. In 1876, a new floating boathouse was erected for the Rutgers Team, but disaster struck in 1882 when heavy rains washed away the boathouse and ruined the boats. Rowing died for 50 years, until 1933, when the sport was revived. The newly-formed rowing club had to start virtually from scratch to acquire equipment. The club organized an intramural boxing program to help raise funds. Yale and Syracuse donated shells to the club, and by the fall of 1933 the crew was back on the waters of the Raritan. In the first race of this new era of rowing at Rutgers, the Scarlet boat defeated a Columbia crew as over 3,000 people packed the Banks of the Raritan to cheer them on.
