Rhododendrons Garden Seats Home Rose Garden When I'm thinking about the garden or talking about the garden (which happens quite a lot) I'm always thinking or saying "that's one of my favourite roses". Garden magazines often have lists of their favourite roses, and I'm quick to agree or (usually) disagree with them.
Rose climbing on the archway I'm not overly impressed by the hybrid teas which inevitably do get on the list. And some roses are far too useful to be in vogue - I've never seen the bright pink Flower Carpet rose get a mention... Roses are just the best (and can be the worst) plants in any garden. I love how universal roses are. There is equal joy in seeing two or three roses in a tiny town garden or seeing the huge rose panoramas in botanical gardens . A love of roses brings people from vastly different gardens together. My roses do NOT get sprayed once a fortnight. I spray maybe once or twice in a whole year, particularly for bad infestations of aphids and/or rust. It's partly laziness, but I'm also not happy using nasty chemicals. Please don't be disappointed if I don't sound like a rose dictionary, though occasionally I'll check in my big

History of the White House Gardens and Grounds
Tulips bloom around the fountain on the South Lawn of the White House April 15, 2003. White House photo by Tina Hager. Planning for a garden at the White House began with President Washington, who expressed a desire to plant a botanical garden. Washington purchased the land for what is now the South lawn from a tobacco planter named Davy Burns, while the North grounds originally belonged to the Pierce family. As the first President to occupy the White House, John Adams ordered the first planting of a garden. Thomas Jefferson then undertook a complete redesign of the garden. He started the tradition of planting trees when he planted hundreds of seedling trees, although none of Jefferson's trees is believed to have survived to the present day. It was his idea to plant groves of trees, he picked the location for the flower garden, and fences and walls were eventually built where he had specified. In addition, Jefferson built an arc of triumph flanked by two weeping willow trees on the southeast corner of the grounds that are no longer standing. President James Monroe increased tree planting on the White House grounds, and hired Charles Bizet, who is considered to have been the first White House gardener. When John Quincy Adams followed Monroe into office in 1825, he replaced Bizet with John Ousley, who remained the White House gardener for the next 30 years. Adams was the first President to develop the flower gardens that Jefferson had earlier laid out, and was also the first to plant ornamental trees. As an avid gardener himself, Adams personally enjoyed planting seedlings that included fruit trees, herbs and vegetables.

Is your rose garden ready for this season?
by Don Trotter Ph.D. ello fellow Earthlings, and wel- come to the rose garden. I want all of you to have some extra fun with this particular column. Yes, because gardening is fun, but also because roses are such an emotionally rich part of our collective gardening consciousness. If you find this topic interesting and helpful, I encourage you to contact me with your specific rose questions and I'll see to it that you are totally prepared for an awesome spring, full of flowers. Now let's talk about that rose garden This is the time of year to prepare your rose garden's soil for the coming spring flush of growth and flowers. If you follow the advice provided in this article, your roses will be something to brag about when the weather gets warm. Beautiful garden roses are some of the most spectacular and pleasing testimonies of successful gardening practices and the rebirth of spring. The first thing to do is clean up all of the spent blossom and deadwood in the roses themselves. Then rake around the rose garden to clean up any fallen leaves, petals or trash. Now we are ready to start. Note: for those of you that are creating backyard compost, kudos, and from this moment forward when I refer to mulch, you may substitute compost.

Dear Rose Gardener,
Welcome to our "own-root" rose catalogue! We propagate and grow roses on their own roots, mostly from our own mother plant collection. We prefer this method, as opposed to bud grafting, because we find the plants are more vigorous, long-lived, free of alien suckers, and able to return as themselves after a hard freeze. We sell our roses from our nursery, through select nurseries and garden centres in B. C. in spring and by "mail" order - through this catalogue and an up-to-date availability list we can e-mail, fax or mail to you ($2.00). Sorry, we ship to Canada only. Please visit our two new features on this website, our "Rose Sale" page and "New Introductions" . For planting and pruning info, rose care tips, etc. please see Rose News . We hope to update these pages frequently. Our roses are listed Alphabetically in our current availability list and in our "Rose Catalogue"

Saturday, May 14, 2005 The Organic Garden: A rose can seem lonely without companions By ANN LOVEJOY
SPECIAL TO THE POST-INTELLIGENCER I deeply enjoy roses, but I rarely enjoy rose gardens. Formal settings seem to underline the essential shapelessness of these beloved plants, which need help to look like anything but a bundle of twigs for half the year. To my eye, roses look best when tucked among a wide range of companions that provide contrasts of form, texture and color to the rose display. This is especially true for roses, whose display can be brief indeed. What looks homelier from June through March than an arbor filled with a Banksian rose that blooms for maybe two weeks in April or May? Far better to add a later and longer flowering companion perhaps a clematis or two to help it through that long, long dry spell. It also won't hurt to have a tapestry of evergreen shrubs such as rosemary and sage at the rose's feet, along with a variety of grasses, perennials and annuals to bring an ongoing flow of color and interest to the rose bed all through the year.

Scentsational is one of those. A few can fill an entire room with their heady aroma. The miniature climbers are very prolific and can cover a trellis in a short time. I had one in a large square container with a small trellis stuck into the pot and by mid summer, I needed a larger trellis and there were large clusters of blooms so heavy we had to support them. Several of the roses pictured above I already have in my garden and the rest are some of the ones I plan to acquire. Miniatures lend themselves very well to container gardening which is my favorite type of gardening. They grow to a good sized plant when put in larger containers and can be under planted with mosses, lobelia, or alyssum. They can be planted in combination with other container plants and are great looking in window boxes. There are trailing type miniatures that can cascade down the side of the box or container. I plan to make a raised bed for some of mine with a bench seat around the sides. All in all, miniature roses are a very versatile way to have roses in your garden. Being in the Northwest, it is often too moist here for roses but I have found that my minis are less susceptible to disease and powdery mildew than their big brothers are. I have had to treat mine for aphids but they recover well and they have never had black spot. They are fed and treated for problems just like the full sized guys.

These gardens are superficially simple in design, appealing in bloom and complex to create. The challenge is to orchestrate the play of different foliages and plant forms as well as to carry an intentional color palette. In this play, the foliages, shapes and colors are independently repeated, often with totally unrelated plants. Unifying all parts are the severely geometric beds reinforced by clipped hedges and turf, contrasted with the release from geometry by the natural forms of the plants. Choosing the Right Roses for your Garden
There are literally hundreds of types of roses that you can grow in your garden. With such a selection to choose from, it can be extremely difficult to choose the rose that's right for you. To make this task a bit easier, We've outlined a few important factors you should consider, and explained some of the different types of roses to aid in your search.
Tips on Choosing Roses
  • Color may seem trivial at first glance, but it's usually an important factor to those that want to grow roses. Usually it is simply a matter of personal preference, but you may want to try creating a complimentary color palette for your rose garden.
