Enjoy the Tyler Rose Garden "A person who calls a rose by any other name is probably pruning!" Although it's not the best kept secret, if you haven't been to the Tyler Rose Garden recently, you should certainly go soon! Tyler is known as the rose capital of the U.S. Field rose production has been a hallmark of Smith County in northeast Texas since the turn of the century. In celebration of the influence the rose industry has had on this area, Tyler developed a first-class rose garden. This flowering jewel is located in the 1900 block of W. Front Street, just west of downtown Tyler. Known nation-wide for its outstanding display of roses, the Tyler Rose Garden is full of breath-taking beauty, especially in the spring and again in mid-October when the Rose Garden is in full bloom for the annual Texas Rose Festival. Roses , of course, are the main attraction at the garden, though there are several other features in the 14 acre complex that compliment the roses. Standing on the balcony of the Rose Garden Center looking over the garden , your senses will be overwhelmed with color when the garden is at its peak of bloom, which in the spring time is right about now! Row upon row of hybrid tea and floribunda roses invite the visitor to come into the garden to smell and learn. There are at least 400 rose varieties and 30,000 bushes to experience. Every year 2000 or more bushes are replanted every year, keeping the garden current with the newest varieties.

The garden's 79 year history is one of growth, decline and revitalization. In 1924 rose-lovers Frederick E. Bruce and William H. Kinsey led a campaign to raise funds for a Shaker Heights Community Rose Garden. In 1926 Charles Schneider, the architect of Shaker's City Hall, designed the garden, next to Woodbury and Onaway schools. Because the rose garden was on school land, the school district's staff maintained it. But in the '70s and '80s, as a consequence of tighter budgets and higher labor costs, the garden received less care. By the early '90's it had declined so much that there was consideration of using the land for a parking lot. The thought of losing the garden stirred the Onaway School neighborhood. In 1993 former Woodbury Road resident Lowell Van Deusen made a gift to the Onaway Community Association to help renew the garden.

Gardens
One of the most lushly planted urban parks in America, Balboa Park is a horticultural paradise offering a magnificent backdrop for the cultural attractions. The relaxing atmosphere created by the stately rows of palms, forested lawns, and ever-changing floral displays greatly enhances a visit to the Park. The City of San Diego's Park and Recreation Department manages and maintains the grounds of this spectacular public resource. On approximately 1,200 acres, there are currently about 15,000 trees in Balboa Park, of some 350 different species. The tallest trees are the eucalyptus and pines growing along Sixth Avenue, which range in height from 100-125 feet. The Park's landmark tree is the Moreton Bay fig growing north of the Natural History Museum. This tree, planted before 1915, is over 60 feet tall with a spread of 120 feet. Alcazar Garden , named because its design is patterned after the gardens of Alcazar Castle in Seville, Spain, lies adjacent to the Art Institute and Mingei Museum. It is known for its ornate fountains, exquisite turquoise blue, yellow, and green Moorish tiles and shady pergola. This formal garden, bordered by boxwood hedges, is planted with 7,000 annuals for a vibrant display of color throughout the year. The garden has been reconstructed to replicate the 1935 design by San Diego architect Richard Requa. Open 365 days a year, free.

Olbrich invites its members, volunteers, supporters, and the public to participate in opening this spectacular addition to the Gardens. The Rose Garden will open at noon with members of Olbrich’s Horticulture Staff present from noon – 4 p.m. to share with visitors information about the garden. A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m. Also from noon – 4 p.m., members of Olbrich Botanical Society and Olbrich neighbors can stop by special booths to receive a free gift while supplies last. Those who join the Olbrich Botanical Society between noon and 4 p.m. will receive a free commemorative Rose Garden poster. Olbrich's progressive new two-acre Rose Garden is at the forefront of national garden design trends, moving away from traditional, formal plantings to feature more environmentally friendly, hardy shrub roses. The shrub roses are integrated into a landscape of natural curving borders filled with colorful perennials, waving ornamental grasses, blooming shrubs, vines, and small ornamental trees, as well as colorful spring bulbs. The garden will help home gardeners choose the best roses for their own Wisconsin yards. Prairie style architecture, including an accessible native stone overlook tower, will offer views of the Gardens and Lake Monona. The gazebo and arbors previously located in Olbrich’s former Rose Garden have been moved to key sites in the new Garden. A fountain, with five water jets on each side to represent the five petals of the rose, provides a cooling centerpiece. As in the rest of the Gardens, benches and smooth accessible pathways are an integral part of the new Rose Garden.

http://www.roseinfo.com/
Old roses offer the gardener a wonderful array of gardening opportunities. They are time tested survivors whose versatility in our gardens are unmatched by any other plant types. Roses, particularly the older varieties, come in so many forms that they are limitless in their garden use. They climb, they ramble, they trail, and they form bushes large and small. They bloom steadily for several seasons or overwhelmingly for one. They can be used as the background for a bed, or forms its backbone, or be massed for color in the foreground. They even settle happily into containers for those who have no garden space at all. But even more profound than their application in the garden are the memories they evoke. Felder Rushing, a good friend and creative gardener in Mississippi, described gardening best when addressing a group of gardener several years ago. With empty camera and six-year old daughter in hand, he would pretend to take a picture of her smelling a rose. He would tell her, "Now Zoe, put your nose close and take a deep breath, and I will take your picture." He explained, "one day, thirty years from now, I'll be dead or gone, and with one sniff, we'll be back together again." I hope such memories await you in the wonderful world of old garden roses. This website presents an overview of antique roses which will interest the novice and the experienced rosarian alike. In the first section of this site -

The Fragrant Year , 1967, which she also illustrated, is a landmark work on choice garden plants. Speaking from her own research and experiences in her Pennsylvania garden, she wrote countless articles on old roses for the Heritage Roses Group and for national and international publications such as The American Rose Annual and The Royal National Rose Society . Mrs. Bell was mentor to many prominent experts in the field, including Dr. Arthur O. Tucker of Delaware State University and Rev. Douglas Seidel of Emmaus, Pennsylvania. It was Doug Seidel who arranged for many of the more rare Noisette specimens to be included in this garden, and even donated prized plants from his personal collection.
At present, the garden contains thirty different Noisettes, with more to come. In addition to the obvious varieties–the ‘Champneys Pink Cluster’, ‘Blush Noisette’, and the parents ‘Old Blush China’ and ‘Double White Musk’–the garden includes many one-of-a-kind selections. Doug Seidel personally donated his "Aunt Louisa Rose" from the garden of President Garfield’s aunt and "Faded Pink Monthly," from Creekside, home of pioneer old rose collector Mrs. Frederick Love Keays, who acquired her plant from the descendent of a slave who rooted a slip before the Civil War.
