Gardening with Roses
How to Get the Most from Your Garden Gardeners all over the world know that roses return more to you for your time and effort than any other flower. To grow roses successfully in any climate, you only need three things: plenty of sun, water and fertilizer.
Timing is also important when planting roses. While spring is considered the ideal time to plant, other times of the year-almost year-round in certain Sunbelt areas-may be appropriate. For general planting times in your area, consult the planting times map. For more specific details, contact your local county extension agent or AARS public garden. Grow a climbing rose up through an apple tree. In this case, the colors are complementary. Ever wonder what it takes to grow prize-winning roses? Renowned rosarian Rayford Reddell knows. At his famous Garden Valley Ranch in California, he tends to more than 8,000 rose bushes in more than 40 different varieties. Ray Reddell started with 12 roses given to him by a friend. Then what started as a hobby became a business: last year, Garden Valley Ranch shipped more than 250,000 blooms all over the United States. The company's customers have included presidents, Madonna and Caroline Kennedy. Many of the roses grown here are varieties that have been chosen as All-America Rose Selections (AARS). Roses winning the designation must meet certain criteria throughout the United States.

Maureen Gilmer visits her guest, gardener Deb Winters, who shows the Lady Banks rose that she planted to fill in atop a wall ( figure A ). Winters explains that starting to cut the tips will encourage lateral and horizontal growth (which will come in handy when it's time to mow under the rose!). The homeowner also has an extensive garden of potted minis ( figure B ), which she created to help screen a bare olive tree growing near hr swimming pool. Since the roses are in fairly small pots, she waters and fertilizes them often, and she prunes them regularly to keep the blossoms coming all season long. Gilmer fills in Winters's new plantings with several pots of golden minis, which will act as a ground cover ( figure C ). Then she adds verticality and a visual barrier with white tree minis ( figure D RESOURCES: Easy, Practical Pruning: Techniques for Training Trees, Shrubs, Vines, and Roses

    A Rose Lover's Four Acres
    Gardener's Diary : Episode GRD-1205

Linda Hagler in her garden by Martha Tate, special to HGTV.com Linda and Dan Hagler's late-19th-century house sits at the edge of an old pecan grove on the outskirts of the historical town of Madison, Georgia. A rose-bordered, curving gravel drive leads to the white clapboard house and several rustic outbuildings, including an old barn and a stable. Dan has built fences, trellises and arbors to hold hundreds of Linda's roses, which grow in profusion. The fenced front yard is entered through an arched trellis laden with roses and clematis. The straight walkway to the front door is lined with flowers, and numerous beds along the fence and in front of the house are packed with colorful perennials and annuals. In back of the house are more roses, which clamber over a white wooden trellis that Dan built. This arch leads to a shady part of the garden where hydrangeas and other shade-loving plants surround a rustic barn. The back patio looks out at the main rose garden, which contains an abundance of colorful roses planted in a cottage-garden style. On the other side of the stable (the front of which is covered with a white Lady Banks rose) is another rectangular garden planted with brightly colored poppies and more roses and shrubs. Beyond this area is a vegetable garden, rows of grapevines and a fruit orchard.

About The Rose Garden
The Tyler Municipal Rose Garden is a 14-acre park, making it the nations largest rose garden. The garden is full of breath-taking beauty, especially in the spring and again in mid-October when the Rose Garden is in full bloom. There are over 38,000 rose bushes of at least 500 different varieties, from tall grafted rose trees to miniature roses no larger than a dime. The Rose Garden is the site of the annual Texas Rose Festival held in mid-October each year and attracts tourists by the thousands. Numerous visitors gather to meet the Rose Queen, and enjoy refreshments in this spectacular outdoor setting during the popular Queens Tea. Click here for more information about the Texas Rose Festival. The Garden is one of 24 All American Rose Selection (AARS) test gardens in the country where the newest varieties are evaluated over a two-year period. These are bushes not yet introduced, and the ones that pass the test for vigor, flowering, and disease resistance are then nationally introduced to the gardening public as AARS selections. Many folks visiting the rose garden bring pad and pencil to write down favorite varieties, making notes on fragrance, color and form.

Since that time, a red rose has been printed on everything from our city buses to billboards and brochures. The reason for the Rose City designation is that Richmond is the home of Hills Rose Growers. The E.G. Hill Company and the Joseph H. Hill Company together with the Hill Floral Products Company were the premier rose growers and marketers of cut roses, accounting for the sale of millions of roses annually in the U.S. and around the world. It was only natural then to honor our rose heritage by establishing a public Rose Garden to be enjoyed by our own residents and visitors to our city as well. The idea of the Rose Garden became a reality in 1985 when the Rose Garden Project Committee was formed with the purpose of establishing a public garden.

We are growing impatient of the usual Rose garden, generally a sort of target of concentric rings of beds placed upon turf, often with no special aim at connected design with the portions of the garden immediately about it, and filled with plants without a thought of their colour effect or any other worthy intention. Now that there is such good and wonderfully varied material to be had, it is all the more encouraging to make Rose gardens more beautiful, not with beds of Roses alonemany a Rose garden is already too extensive in its display of mere bedsbut to consider the many different ways in which Roses not only consent to grow but in which they live most happily and look their best. Beds we have had, and arches and bowers, but very little as yet in the whole range of possible Rose garden beauty. The Rose garden at its best admits of many more beauties than these alone. Of the Roses we have now to choose from some are actual species, and many of them so nearly related to species that their wild way of growth may well be taken into account and provided for.
