Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. Hot, hot, hot! Plants, especially roses, can suffer this time of year, so plenty of water is vital to their good health. Rose plants are busy now, storing up lots of energy from the sun and from the water and nutrients you give them. But when the temperature is above 90 degrees, they don't expend much of that energy. In fact, growth will be slower and flowers smaller. But not to worry! In another month or so, cooler weather will encourage huge blooms and the most vibrant colors of the season. Water at the roots will keep plant stems and leaves turgid and able to photosynthesize. An overhead watering will keep plants cool and wilt-free during the hottest weather, and a strong spray from the hose will wash off dust and pollen, as well as those nasty red spider mites that can suck the life out of a rose leaf in no time flat. If you don't spray a miticide regularly, be sure and do the shower treatment at least once a week. Those almost microscopic red spiders can be seen on the undersides of rose leaves, and they often spin a few webs, too. They thrive in hot, dry weather and can defoliate a rose plant very quickly. If you see 'em, spray 'em! But make sure you do it in plenty of time for the foliage to dry before nightfall.

... Express Order Dr. Leda's Rose Journal Louisiana Is Not For Sissies By Dr. Leda Horticulture , O. R. September, 2005 Mother Nature gives Dr. Leda a break.... It was five and a half years ago that I moved from Berkeley, California, to a small rural town in south Louisiana, right smack in the heart of French-speaking Cajun and Creole country. Needless to say, I was in for a heavy dose of culture shock. I'll never forget the very first time I ventured into the local Wal-Mart. Being a typical Berkeley person, I had never set foot in one of these behemoth box stores in my life. I wandered around like a lost soul for what seemed like hours, searching the vast sterile boxiness in vain for a simple box of laundry detergent. This super-store was so expansive it comprised four zip codes, six area codes, and at least three USDA climate zones. And yet, it seemed that all I could see, for acres on end in every direction, was mile after mile of aisle after aisle of shelves containing only two items: hair spray and fire ant poison. What was left of Dr. Leda's rose beds after Hurricane Lili in 2003

53. The Tyler Rose Garden
Detailed description of the municipal garden with links to pictures.
http://easttexasgardening.tamu.edu/rose/rose.html
Enjoy the Tyler Rose Garden "A person who calls a rose by any other name is probably pruning!" Although it's not the best kept secret, if you haven't been to the Tyler Rose Garden recently, you should certainly go soon! Tyler is known as the rose capital of the U.S. Field rose production has been a hallmark of Smith County in northeast Texas since the turn of the century. In celebration of the influence the rose industry has had on this area, Tyler developed a first-class rose garden. This flowering jewel is located in the 1900 block of W. Front Street, just west of downtown Tyler. Known nation-wide for its outstanding display of roses, the Tyler Rose Garden is full of breath-taking beauty, especially in the spring and again in mid-October when the Rose Garden is in full bloom for the annual Texas Rose Festival. Roses , of course, are the main attraction at the garden, though there are several other features in the 14 acre complex that compliment the roses. Standing on the balcony of the Rose Garden Center looking over the garden , your senses will be overwhelmed with color when the garden is at its peak of bloom, which in the spring time is right about now! Row upon row of hybrid tea and floribunda roses invite the visitor to come into the garden to smell and learn. There are at least 400 rose varieties and 30,000 bushes to experience. Every year 2000 or more bushes are replanted every year, keeping the garden current with the newest varieties.

Dark Eyes Grape Hyacinth

Rosy Beginnings My interest in roses began when I moved into my first ground level suite. I was in my early thirties, this was a brand new housing development and I had a patio with a small yard at my disposal. The little backyard was grassed and backed by a fence. It seemed barren to me. I knew I wanted a garden there. CONTINUE>> St. Patrick Black Gold For Roses One of the easiest and most rewarding things that you can do to ensure that your roses are healthy and strong, is to top dress them with home made compost. Because it provides plant nutrients in a balanced and ready-to-use form and enriches the texture and structure of the soil, compost is truly black gold for your roses!

    Tips for Fall: Mulch
One of the chores that befall every gardener, often several times a year, is the laborious task of mulching. While many of us view this as an odious task best ranked with mucking stables or raking leaves (I rank these two very closely), I view this mission as my way of helping Mother Nature herself improve my garden. In my mind there is no better way to change the soil in your garden than mulching; not raining fertilizer and chemicals upon it, not amending soil, and no, especially not plowing, tilling, or cultivating. Mulching is the finest thing you can do for a garden bed and I will use the rest of this space to put to rest any doubts you may have as to the veracity of that statement... Read more
