Dilip's Rose Page
Welcome to my rose page! I am an organic gardener and have been growing roses since 1995. I planted my first roses on March 11, 1995 in a 5'x8'x8" raised bed I built out of railroad timbers. I've had six hybrid teas there, but they've never thrived - early in the season I get some lovely blooms, but then the bushes look sickly. I think this is because as nearby trees leaf out, the roses just aren't getting enough sun. The creosote in the timbers can't help either. In mid-December 1998, I started working on putting in a much larger 4'x33'x7" raised bed along my driveway. It was a lot of work excavating about 18" down, getting cedar to build a frame, and filling it with great organic material - I didn't finish till around April. The new bed has some old roses as well as a variety of hybrid teas. It is a much happier garden and in the first season several of the roses have grown taller than I! From late February through mid-May 2000, I created a new 4.5' wide by 38' long bed perpendicular to the 1999 bed, and close to the front of my yard. This bed is divided into three sub-beds, each with seven hybrid teas or floribundas. It's not so difficult to grow roses - plant in a rich organic medium (try mixing well rotted horse manure, leaf mold, compost, earthworm castings, and lime)

Rose Gardening in Containers
Rose gardening in tubs, barrels, planters, or other containers reflects the movable and changeable ways and whims of today's society. Portable rose plantings are not only a decorative addition to any part of the outdoor living area, they are also a perfect way to change the look of the landscape from month to month or year to year. Roses in pots extend the scope and possibilities of gardening. Wide walkways can be highlighted with tubs of roses spotted here and there. Steps to the front or back door can be graced with the beauty and fragrance of roses. Miniature roses can dress up window boxes in the summer, and then be brought indoors in winter to perk up the house. Patios, decks, and terraces have become favorite spots for entertaining and relaxing on warm summer days and evenings. Add to the pleasure of these moments with planters teeming with the color and fragrance of the world's favorite flower. In an area used at night, select a white or pastel rose, such as Cherish, French Lace, or Rose Parade. Bring color right down to the swimming pool with pots of roses set on the paving. If you have a spot to hang a basket, fill it with miniature roses for a continuous display of summer color, then move the basket indoors for the winter. Select a trailing variety and let the flowers cascade from tree limbs, overhangs, and brackets.

    Six Easy-to-Follow Steps
POSTED: 2:13 pm EDT June 23, 2004 UPDATED: 2:27 pm EDT June 23, 2004 Below are the descriptions of five varieties of roses in Claire Choquette's garden. Carefree Beauty, shrub, (1977) - A time-honored shrub rose from Iowa State's Griffith Buck. Its leathery, apple green foliage, slightly ruffled pink blooms, and bushy habit are naturally disease resistant and this rose, like all Buck varieties, are extremely winter hardy. Large orange rosehips are a bonus in the fall. Baby Love, shrublet, (1992) - displays countless golden daisy-like blooms and bright green foliage all summer on a compact and obedient bush. Look for grape-sized orange rosehips in the fall. Don't let the name fool you, this baby is hard-as-nails and extremely resistant to black spot. Betty Prior, floribunda, (1935) - This old favorite supplies endless clusters of old fashioned single-petaled pink blooms. The vigorous and free blooming habit and winter hardiness make Betty Prior a natural for Rhode Island gardens.
