EUNICE KENNEDY SHRIVER RECEIVES NCAA'S HIGHEST HONOR; 2002 THEODORE ROOSEVELT AWARD
INDIANAPOLIS-The NCAA Honors Committee today named Eunice Kennedy Shriver recipient of the 2002 Theodore Roosevelt Award - the highest honor the NCAA bestows on an individual. Shriver is the executive vice-president of the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation and founder and honorary chairman of Special Olympics, Inc., The award, also known as the "Teddy," is presented annually to a distinguished citizen who is a former college student-athlete and who has exemplified the ideals and purposes of college athletics by demonstrating a continuing interest and concern for physical fitness and sport. The award is named after former President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt in recognition of his role in the inception of the NCAA. During Roosevelt's term as president, there was a public outcry over the violence in college football. Roosevelt told the leaders of several renowned universities that they had to either make the sport safer or he would abolish it. This led to the formation of an association committed to protecting the interests of student-athletes, now known as the NCAA. Past "Teddy" honorees have included former United States Presidents and leaders of education, business, government, industry and entertainment, among them William S. Cohen, the 2001 winner; Bill Cosby; Dwight D. Eisenhower; Althea Gibson; Jesse Owens; Ronald Reagan; and John R. Wooden.

Theodore Roosevelt With the assassination of President McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, not quite 43, became the youngest President in the Nation's history. He brought new excitement and power to the Presidency, as he vigorously led Congress and the American public toward progressive reforms and a strong foreign policy. He took the view that the President as a "steward of the people" should take whatever action necessary for the public good unless expressly forbidden by law or the Constitution." I did not usurp power," he wrote, "but I did greatly broaden the use of executive power." Roosevelt's youth differed sharply from that of the log cabin Presidents. He was born in New York City in 1858 into a wealthy family, but he too struggledagainst ill healthand in his triumph became an advocate of the strenuous life.

In battles between business and labor, Roosevelt extended the power both of the presidency and of the federal government to protect what he saw as the public interest. He enjoyed the responsibilities of world power and greatly expanded United States involvement in world affairs. His domestic social and economic reforms were the first federal attempts to deal with the problems created by a modern industrial society. Roosevelt became the youngest man ever to be president when he succeeded the assassinated William McKinley in 1901 at the age of 42. However, he was older than

Theodore Roosevelt
In 1884, because of ill health and the death of his wife, Roosevelt abandoned his political work for some time. He invested part of the fortune he had inherited from his father in a cattle ranch in the Badlands of Dakota Territory, expecting to remain in the West for many years. He became a passionate hunter, especially of big game, and an ardent believer in the wild outdoor life which brought him health and strength. In 1886 Roosevelt returned to New York, married again, and once more plunged into politics.
Elected governor of the state of New York in 1898, he invested his two-year administration with the vigorous and businesslike characteristics which were his hallmark. He would have sought reelection in 1900, since much of his work was only half done, had the Republicans not chosen him as their candidate for the second office of the Union. He held the vice-presidency for less than a year, succeeding to the presidency after the assassination of President McKinley on September 14, 1901. In 1904 Roosevelt was elected to a full term as president.
In 1902 President Roosevelt took the initiative in opening the Intemational Court of Arbitration at The Hague, which, though founded in 1899, had not been called upon by any power in its first three years of existence. The United States and Mexico agreed to lay an old difference of theirs, concerning the Pious Foundations of California, before the Hague Tribunal. When this example was followed by other powers, the arbitration machinery created in 1899 was finally called into operation. Roosevelt also played a prominent part in extending the use of arbitration to international problems in the Western Hemisphere, concluding several arbitration treaties with European powers too, although the Senate refused to ratify them.

Theodore Roosevelt Island
Theodore Roosevelt was a man with vision. He considered the future before making decisions and his legacies still influence us. Perhaps his greatest legacy was in conservation. This wooded island is a fitting memorial to the outdoorsman, naturalist, and visionary who was our 26th President. After Roosevelt's death on January 6, 1919, citizens wanted to establish a memorial in his honor. The 91 acre wooded island in the Potomac seemed the perfect place. The Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Association purchased the island in 1932. Congress approved funds in 1960 and the memorial was dedicated on October 27, 1967. Eric Gugler designed the memorial . Paul Manship designed the statue. Theodore Roosevelt Island has a diverse history. Native Americans called the island "Analostan" and used it for fishing. It was later named "My Lord's Island," when King Charles I granted the island to Lord Baltimore. The next owner, a sea captain, called it "Barbadoes," after his childhood home. For years it was a summer resort for other wealthy Virginians. The Mason family owned it for 125 years. In the early 1800's, John Mason built a brick mansion and cultivated extensive gardens. The Masons also operated a ferry between the island and Georgetown. The Masons left "Mason's Island" by 1832, after a causeway built to the Virginia shore stagnated their water. For years after that the island was a picnic resort, except during the Civil War when black and white Union Army troops were stationed here.

Theodore Roosevelt was born in New York City in 1858. He studied at Harvard University and Columbia University Law School (1880-81). The following year he was elected to the New York State legislature (1882-84) where he developed a reputation as an honest politician opposed to corrupt, party-machine politics.
In 1895 Roosevelt was appointed president of New York City Board of Police Commissioners. In 1897 Roosevelt became Assistant Secretary of the Navy and with Leonard Wood organized the Rough Riders, a volunteer cavalry unit that took part in the Spanish-American War. During the war Roosevelt served in Cuba as a colonel.
In 1899 elected governor of New York (1899-1900). Elected the Republican Vice-President in 1901 he succeeded to the presidency on the assassination of William McKinley on 14th September, 1901. Roosevelt was re-elected in 1904 on a program of reform. Using information supplied by investigative journalists, Roosevelt attempted to deal with political and economic corruption. This including bringing successful suits against 44 major corporations. However, in 1906 he indicated that the campaign was coming to an end when he described investigative journalists as

Theodore Roosevelt 1858-1919
On October 28, 1858, Theodore Roosevelt was born into one of the wealthiest and most well-established families in New York. His father, Theodore Roosevelt Sr., was a descendant of the original group of Dutch merchants who made their fortunes at building New York harbor into one of the most prosperous ports in America. Theodore Sr. was a gentleman and a glassware merchant. His wife, Martha Bulloch, was descended from the southern "aristocracy" of Georgia. Together, they belonged to the uppermost echelons of New York society. Not at all surrounded by the type of men he would come to champion in years to come, Theodore Jr. was well-positioned to lead a life of privilege and leisure.
Despite the wealth and social position of his family, Roosevelt's young life was far from easy. He chronically suffered from violent attacks of asthma and poor eyesight. Yet his illness inspired him to embrace life all the more fully. To improve his health, he boxed and lifted dumbbells in a room in his home which he had converted into a gymnasium.
During his early years in politics, Roosevelt enjoyed success in his professional life but suffered personal tragedy privately. In 1884 his mother died of typhoid fever. Two days later, his wife died after giving birth to their first child, Alice Lee. Although he would go on to marry Edith K. Carow, a family friend since childhood, he continued to blame himself for his "inconstancy" to the memory of Alice. On second marriages, he wrote, "I have always considered that they argued weakness in man's character. You could not reproach me one-half as bitterly as I reproach myself."

As President, Roosevelt held the ideal that the Government should be the great arbiter of the conflicting economic forces in the Nation, especially between capital and labor, guaranteeing justice to each and dispensing favors to none. Some of Theodore Roosevelt's most effective achievements were in conservation. He added enormously to the national forests in the West, reserved lands for public use, and fostered great irrigation projects. Once, Teddy asked his advisors "Is there any law which prohibits me from declaring this island a bird refuge?" When they replied no, Teddy proclaimed "Very well, then, I so declare it!

What would the public of this country give today to see Abraham Lincoln or George Washington in their habits as they lived, in moving picture form? Excerpted from Presidential Temperament , by David Keirsey and Ray Choiniere
The year 1912 was a presidential election year, and former President Theodore Roosevelt was again campaigning for the nation's highest office. By the evening of October 14 his campaign had carried him to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he was to deliver a speech in the city's public auditorium. The time was nearing for him to speak, so he strode from his hotel onto the sidewalk outside, where a car was waiting to take him to the auditorium. As Roosevelt walked toward the car a man suddenly stepped up to him and pointed a pistol at his heart. The gunman pulled the trigger and a bullet burst from the pistol and smashed its way into Roosevelt's chest. His shirt was suddenly spattered with red, and more blood immediately began seeping from the ugly hole. The bullet had come to rest against his rib cage, a mere half inch from his lungs. "He pinked me!" shouted Roosevelt, as bystanders rushed to subdue the gunman, John Shrank. They wrestled Shrank to the ground and then, seeing Roosevelt's bloody clothing, prepared to rush him to the hospital. But they found Teddy Roosevelt a more difficult man to deal with than the would-be assassin. "TR" adamantly refused to go for help. "You just stay where you are!" he thundered. "I am going to make this speech and you might as well compose yourself."
