    by tragedy.

Program One
"The Long Campaign" 1858-1901 TR is born into a wealthy New York family that has a strong sense of social justice. He fights his severe asthma through a strenuous exercise program. He be- comes New York State assemblyman. Then tragedy strikes with the untimely deaths of his beloved first wife and his mother. To escape his grief, he flees to the Dakota Badlands for the rigors of ranch life. When he returns, his political career flourishes; he eventually becomes William McKinley's Vice President.
Program Two "The Bully Pulpit" 1901-1904 After McKinley's assassination, Roosevelt becomes an "accidental" president. Seeing himself as a crusader, TR uses the presidency to advance his agenda of social reform. He expands the power of the presidential office and comes to dominate American politics. Yet, the night he is elected to a second term, TR announces he will not run again, ultimately weakening his second term. Program Three "The Good Fight" 1905-1909 TR is just 46 years old when he is inaugurated as president. He builds the Panama Canal, wins the Nobel Prize for Peace, and combatively introduces widesweeping social reforms. As his presidency draws to a close, TR names his best friend, Secretary of War William Howard Taft, as his successor. Taft wins the 1908 election.

of the United States 33rd Governor of New York State and 26th President of the United States . Avid outdoorsman. The last great Republican President until Dwight Eisenhower , Theodore Roosevelt was a true progressive. He took the view that the President as a "steward of the people" should take whatever action necessary for the public good unless expressly forbidden by law or the Constitution." I did not usurp power," he wrote, "but I did greatly broaden the use of executive power." As President, Roosevelt held the ideal that the Government should be the great arbiter of the conflicting economic forces in the Nation, especially between capital and labor, guaranteeing justice to each and dispensing favors to none. Some of Theodore Roosevelt's most effective achievements were in conservation. He added enormously to the national forests in the West, reserved lands for public use, and fostered great irrigation projects. Once, Teddy asked his advisors "Is there any law which prohibits me from declaring this island a bird refuge?" When they replied no, Teddy proclaimed "Very well, then, I so declare it!

The quest to secure the Medal of Honor for Theodore Roosevelt ended after 103 years when President William J. Clinton presented the nation's highest military award to Theodore Roosevelt posthumously. Tweed Roosevelt received the Medal on behalf of the Roosevelt family, in the Roosevelt Room of the White House on Tuesday, January 16, 2001. TR was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery on July 1, 1898, during the Spanish-American War, in the battle to capture San Juan Heights, near Santiago, Cuba, when he led the First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry (Rough Riders) and other troops in two dramatic charges against entrenched Spanish positions. Tweed Roosevelt, a great grandson of TR, was chosen to receive the Medal for the family because of his leadership in the efforts to bring about the award. Back in 1898 Roosevelt, first Lieutenant Colonel, then Colonel of the Rough Riders, as the colorful regiment of cowboys, Indians, and Ivy League athletes was known, was recommended for the Congressional Medal of Honor by the chain of command in Cuba, Brigadier General Leonard Wood, who had won the Medal of Honor fighting the Apaches, Major General Samuel S. Sumner, an eyewitness to the San Juan Heights battle, Major General "Fighting Joe" Wheeler, and Major General William R. Shafter, the commanding general in Cuba who had himself won the Medal of Honor in the Civil War.

Born in New York City, Theodore Roosevelt spent the earlier part of his life battling asthma; once he conquered the disease, he passed the remainder of his days battling external foes, often conquering them as well. His greatest gift, among many, was his unerring ability to promote himself in the media. Despite his upper class upbringing and education at Harvard College, Roosevelt was always able to get along with men of any class and social background. He sought a political life in order to reform society and prevent what he perceived was the threat of revolution by the lower classes. His fearless work as president of New York City's Board of Police Commissioners caught the attention of political associates of William McKinley . After his election as President, McKinley appointed Roosevelt assistant secretary of the navy in 1897. Much to Navy Secretary Long's chagrin, Roosevelt would make policy himself particularly when the secretary was out lunching. One such case involved the appointment and supply of Admiral Dewey's Asiatic Squadron with orders that they head for Manila harbor.

The Early Years
Theodore Roosevelt was born in New York City. Roosevelt was a sickly child who suffered from asthma. He developed an early interest in wildlife, and as a child hoped to become a zoologist. He traveled extensively with his family and as he was too sick as a child to go to school, he was taught by private tutors. In 1875, at the age of 17, Teddy Roosevelt took and passed the Harvard entrance exam. He began his studies the next year. A year after graduating from Harvard and beginning Columbia Law School, Roosevelt left school to run for the New York State Senate. He won and served for two years. After this, Roosevelt worked as a cattle rancher in the Dakota Territory for two years and was for a short period a Deputy Sheriff of Billings County. From 1889 to 1895 Roosevelt served on the Commission of the US Civil Service. He vigorously worked to insure strict enforcement of the Civil Service laws. From 1895-1897, Roosevelt served as President of the New York City Police Board. From 1897 to 1898 Roosevelt served as the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. He was a strong supporter of the war with Spain. When the war began, Roosevelt resigned his post to become Commander of the US Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, otherwise known as the "Rough Riders." He led a charge up San Juan hill and became famous throughout America.

Teddy Roosevelt Biography Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt
Teddy Roosevelt's name evokes many memories. He was the 26th president of the United States, a naturalist, and a soldier. Among his exploits were heading the Rough Riders, winning a Nobel Peace Prize, and beginning construction of the Panama Canal. Even the teddy bear owes its name to this American great: a toy maker named a stuffed bear in his honor after hearing of Roosevelt's refusal to shoot a bear cub while hunting in 1902. PERSONAL LIFE He had one daughter, Alice, by his first wife, Alice Hathaway Lee. Roosevelt had the severe misfortune of losing both his wife and his mother on the same day. In dealing with his grief, he moved out West to tend a cattle ranch. Here he hunted and regained health and strength before moving back to New York in 1886. Roosevelt married Edith Kermit Carow the same year and they took home in Sagamore Hill on Long Island, New York. Together they had five children. EARLY POLITICS Upon his return, Roosevelt was elected to a two-year term as governor of the state of New York the same year. Once again, he championed political reform. In 1900, he entered 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue as Vice President under President McKinley. He would only hold this office for less than a year, as McKinley was assassinated on September 14, 1901.

Theodore Roosevelt

Theodore Roosevelt One of the most colorful Presidents of the United States was Teddy Roosevelt. Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858, in New York City. His parents were Theodore Roosevelt Sr. and Martha Bulloch. "Teedie," as his close friends and family called him, was the second child of four. As he grew up he developed a love of natural history and reading, as well as hunting, boxing, and wrestling. He was educated in expensive private elementary and high schools.
Teddy at his College Graduation Roosevelt went to Harvard from 1876 to 1880, where his hard work led him to the Columbia University Law School. During his Harvard years, he met Alice Lee, whom he married after his graduation. They settled in New York, where he wrote a book entitled The Naval War of 1812 . Eventually, he came to the world of politics, and in 1881, was elected as a Republican to the New York State Assembly. Here, he worked with members of both parties, but did not run again in 1884 because of family problems.
On February 14, 1884, his wife had died while giving birth to a daughter who survived. Also, on that same day, his mother passed away. Roosevelt left New York and moved out west to Montana where he started the Elkhorn Ranch. Here, for two years, he ran his ranch and continued to write. In 1886, however, he returned to the New York City, entered politics, and took third in the race for Mayor of New York City. He met and married Edith Carow the same year. They moved to Long Island, where they had five children.

This is the complete (834 words) free paper for the essay titled Theodore Roosevelt Theodore Roosevelt Theodore Roosevelt “The life of Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919) was one of constant activity, immense energy, and enduring accomplishments. As the twenty-sixth President of the United States, Roosevelt was the wielder of the Big Stick, the builder of the Panama Canal, an avid conservationist, and the nemesis of the corporate trusts that threatened to monopolize American business at the start of the century. His exploits as a Rough Rider in the Spanish-American War and as a cowboy in the Dakota Territory were indicative of his spirit of adventure and love of the outdoors. Reading and hunting were lifelong passions of his; writing was a lifelong compulsion.” After graduating magna cum laude, from the Harvard University, Theodore began to lay the building blocks for his public career. He began one of the most historic political careers ever.
