DONNA DE VARONA RECEIVES NCAA'S HIGHEST HONOR; 2003 THEODORE ROOSEVELT AWARD
INDIANAPOLIS-The NCAA Honors Committee has named Donna de Varona the recipient of the 2003 Theodore Roosevelt Award, which is the highest honor the NCAA bestows on an individual. De Varona is a pioneer in the field of female athletics and broadcasting. The award, also known as the "Teddy," is presented annually to a distinguished citizen who is a former college student-athlete and who has exemplified the ideals and purposes of college athletics by demonstrating a continuing interest and concern for physical fitness and sport. The award is named after former President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt in recognition of his role in the inception of the NCAA. During Roosevelt's term as president, there was a public outcry over the violence in college football. Roosevelt told the leaders of several renowned universities that they had to either make the sport safer or he would abolish it. This led to the formation of an association committed to protecting the interests of student-athletes, now known as the NCAA. Past "Teddy" honorees have included former United States Presidents and leaders of education, business, government, industry and entertainment, among them Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the 2002 honoree; William S. Cohen; Bill Cosby; Dwight D. Eisenhower; Althea Gibson; Jesse Owens; Ronald Reagan; and John R. Wooden.

President Roosevelt
The popular acclaim that carried Teddy Roosevelt to the governorship of New York didn't stop there. In 1900, Republicans nominated Teddy as President McKinley's running mate. McKinley won a second term, and Teddy was sworn in as vice-president. Six months later, an assassin's bullet killed McKinley. At age 42, Theodore Roosevelt became the nation's youngest president. Roosevelt assumed the office with the same vigor with which he charged up Kettle Hill. A long believer in Captain Mahan's theory of sea power, Roosevelt began to revitalize the navy. Now that America's empire stretched from the Caribbean across the Pacific, the old idea of a canal between the two oceans took on new urgency. Mahan had predicted that "the canal will become a strategic center of the most vital importance," and Teddy agreed. "The canal," Roosevelt said, "was by far the most important action I took in foreign affairs during the time I was President. When nobody could or would exercise efficient authority, I exercised it."

Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace NHS is located at 28 East 20th Street, between Broadway and Park Avenue South. Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, lived at this site from his birth on October 27, 1858 until he was 14 years old. The reconstructed house contains five period rooms, two museum galleries and a bookstore. Teedie, as young Roosevelt was nicknamed, was a sickly but bright boy, from a wealthy family. To improve his health, Teedie began an exercise program at the house's outdoor gymnasium that started a lifelong passion for the "strenuous life." After graduating from Harvard, Roosevelt pursued his boyhood dreams, as a rancher, naturalist, explorer, author and Colonel of the Rough Riders. His political service included reforming the U.S. Civil Service Commission and New York City Police Department, and terms as Governor of New York and Vice President of the U.S. Theodore Roosevelt became president when William McKinley was assassinated in September 1901. As President, Roosevelt pushed progressive reforms, such as conservation of public lands and trust busting, and negotiated an end to the war between Russia and Japan, for which he won a Nobel Peace Prize. Roosevelt's original birthplace was demolished in 1916. After Roosevelt's death in 1919, the site was purchased by the Women's Roosevelt Memorial Association, rebuilt and decorated with many of its original furnishings by Roosevelt's sisters and wife.
