About the U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, history, trivia, and little-known facts, and psychohistory. FULL PORTRAITS OF SELECTED PRESIDENTS 26th President THEODORE ROOSEVELT PRESIDENCY PSYCHOHISTORY Roosevelt never escaped the trauma caused by his sickly childhood. He was haunted throughout his life by the need to prove himself, to establish his strength and virility. "Owing to my asthma I was not able to go to school, and I was nervous and self-conscious," he recalled. "I felt great admiration for men who were fearless and could hold their own in the world, and I had a great desire to be like them." Roosevelt worshiped his father, and the sudden death of Theodore Senior when TR was only 19 intensified the young man's need to make his mark and play a "man's role." In his autobiography, Roosevelt wrote: "In public as in private life a bold front tends to insure peace and not strife." TR always used this bold front to cover his basic insecurity. LITTLE-KNOWN FACTS Roosevelt disliked the nickname Teddy. None of his friends or relatives dared to address him that way. While working as a rancher in the Dakotas, TR served for a time as a deputy sheriff in Billings County.

Arthur, Chester Alan - 21st U.S. President

Died 18 November 1886
Term 1881 to 1885
  • President Arthur signed the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. It broke the Treaty of 1880 with China which allowed Chinese immigrants to enter the U.S. While the Chinese Exclusion Act did halt immigration for 10 years and kept already immigrated Chinese from becoming citizens, Arthur had already vetoed a bill which would have banned any Chinese immigration for 20 years. In 1883 Buffalo Bill, who had become famous hunting buffalo to feed the crews who were laying track for the Transcontinental Railroad by the Union Pacific, organized the first of his wild west shows. These shows featured sharpshooter Annie Oakley and Sioux chief Sitting Bull. In 1883 President Arthur signed the Pendleton Act. This act reformed civil service, which was believed to be filled with politically connected individuals who didn’t really do any work. The Pendelton Act created exams for government jobs. It also created a Civil Service Commission to oversee the new competitive merit system. Chester Alan Arthur - portrait and biographical information at the White House web site.

Lieutenant Colonel Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders, after the battle; at the top of San Juan Hill, Cuba. 2 July 1898 Teddy Roosevelt Honored With Medal WASHINGTON, January, 16, 2001 A former president best known for his charge up San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War posthumously received the Medal of Honor from President Clinton. Before a painting of Theodore Roosevelt, in battle gear and on horseback, Clinton described in glowing terms the former president who, as a lieutenant colonel in the Spanish-American War, led his men up a Cuban hill and "changed the course of the battle and the Spanish-American War,'' Clinton said. "TR was a larger-than-life figure, who gave our nation a larger-than-life vision of our place in the world,'' Clinton said. ``Part of that vision was formed on San Juan Hill.'' Roosevelt openly campaigned for the Medal of Honor, America's highest military decoration, for his performance under fire on July 1, 1898. The action became known as the battle of San Juan Hill. Roosevelt led his regiment of volunteers, the Rough Riders, into action alongside Army regulars up Kettle Hill, one of two hills comprising San Juan Heights. The Rough Riders then advanced up San Juan Hill with as few as four men but arrived after regulars had taken it.

1. Who inspired the first Teddy Bear?
President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt inspired the first Teddy Bear. Although the Steiff Company in Germany produced a jointed stuffed bear in 1902, the First Teddy Bear was made by Rose and Morris Michtom with the influence of Teddy Roosevelt and Clifford Berryman. Here's why: On November 14, 1902, then-President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt went to Mississippi to settle a border dispute between Mississippi and Louisiana. While there, he went on a hunting trip. The other members of the hunting party tied a black bear cub to a tree for President Roosevelt to shoot, but Roosevelt refused to harm the defenseless bear. The next day, political cartoonist Clifford Berryman, drew a cartoon showing President Roosevelt refusing to hurt the helpless bear. The cartoon's caption "Drawing the Line in Mississippi" refers to both the border dispute settlement and the hunting incident.

Pros
The story of Medal Of Honor winner Teddy Roosevelt, Jr., son of a U.S. president. Cons None. The Bottom Line Fascinating, inspiring story of the life of General Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., who won the Medal of Honor on D-Day and who was the son of a U.S. president. Full Review Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., was 57-years-old on D-Day, June 6, 1944, when he landed in Normandy with the 4th U. S. Infantry Division. He suffered from arthritis, walked with the aide of a cane, had a fibrillating heart and suffered from poor eyesight. His troops were coming ashore before their tanks landed on Utah Beach, the opposite of the "tanks first, then troops" plan. They were a mile up the beach from where they were supposed to have landed. The men were under fire and taking cover. The advance was stalled. Along came the man walking upright with a cane. The one-star general armed only with a pistol, waving the cane in the air to encourage his troops as bullets whistled past his head.
