The only President to be elected four times, Roosevelt pioneered the New Deal, which helped the United States overcome the Great Depression. He also directed the nation's efforts to win World War II. Elected:
The Early Years
Franklin Roosevelt was born in Hyde Park, New York. Both he and his mother nearly died during his birth. Roosevelt grew up within the protective atmosphere of Hyde Park. He traveled extensively with his family in the United States and in Europe. He attended Groton Preparatory for high school. From 1900-1904, he was at Harvard University, where he was an average student. He was editor-in-chief of the school paper, The Harvard Crimson. He attended Columbia Law School but dropped out in 1907 after he took and passed the bar exam. After being admitted to the bar, Roosevelt joined a prestigious New York law firm. From 1911 to 1913, he was New York State Senator. From 1913 to 1920 Roosevelt served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. He was an early supporter of US entry into World War I. In 1920, Roosevelt was the Vice Presidential candidate on James Cox's unsuccessful ticket. In 1921, Roosevelt was struck with the polio that paralyzed him for the rest of his life. After he spent three years in recovery, Roosevelt began his political comeback by giving the nominating speech for Alfred E. Smith at the Democratic Convention of 1924.

First Inaugural Address
ATURDAY, MARCH 4, 1933 The former Governor of New York rode to the Capitol with President Hoover. Pressures of the economy faced the President-elect as he took his oath of office from Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes on the East Portico of the Capitol. He addressed the nation by radio and announced his plans for a New Deal. Throughout that day the President met with his Cabinet designees at the White House.
I am certain that my fellow Americans expect that on my induction into the Presidency I will address them with a candor and a decision which the present situation of our Nation impels. This is preeminently the time to speak the truth, the whole truth, frankly and boldly. Nor need we shrink from honestly facing conditions in our country today. This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itselfnameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. In every dark hour of our national life a leadership of frankness and vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory. I am convinced that you will again give that support to leadership in these critical days. In such a spirit on my part and on yours we face our common difficulties. They concern, thank God, only material things. Values have shrunken to fantastic levels; taxes have risen; our ability to pay has fallen; government of all kinds is faced by serious curtailment of income; the means of exchange are frozen in the currents of trade; the withered leaves of industrial enterprise lie on every side; farmers find no markets for their produce; the savings of many years in thousands of families are gone.

Stock Market Crash
In October 1929 the economic prosperity that the United States had enjoyed for most of the 1920s came to an abrupt end. During this period many people had put their savings and earnings in risky investments, particularly the buying of stocks on margin. In these cases, the buyer put up as little as 3 percent of a stock’s price in cash and borrowed the remainder from the broker. The growing demand for stocks and the prosperous state of the nation as a whole caused stock prices to rise, which in turn encouraged more stock purchases. Stock prices reached their height in the so-called “Hoover bull market” during the first six months of the Hoover administration. People invested billions of dollars in the stock market, obtaining money by borrowing from banks, mortgaging their homes, and selling lower-risk government securities, such as Liberty Bonds.

ROOSEVELT, FRANKLIN D.
, thirty-second president of the United States. Born in Hyde Park, New York, the only child in an affluent patrician family, Roosevelt was educated at such citadels of the northeastern establishment as Groton School, Harvard College, class of '04, and Columbia Law School. Law practice bored him, and he early embraced a career in politics, entering with relish into the reform tumult of the Progressive Era. Two influences shaping his public career were his distant kinsman Theodore Roosevelt, whose niece Eleanor he married in 1905, and Woodrow Wilson, whom he served as assistant secretary of the navy during the First World War. In 1920 Roosevelt was the Democratic candidate for vice president in a Republican year. Struck down by poliomyelitis in 1921, he never recovered the use of his legs, though with braces and cane, buoyant determination, and the cooperation of the press, he managed in subsequent years to convey the illusion of mobility. Encouraged by his wife, he returned to politics and in 1928 was elected governor of New York. In 1932, at the bottom of the Great Depression, Roosevelt defeated Herbert Hoover in the presidential election. A quarter of the labor force was out of work, the economy in collapse, and the nation in despair. Confronted by an emergency to which no one knew the answer, Roosevelt saw the national government as the instrument of the general welfare and experiment as the method of democracy. Theodore Roosevelt's New Nationalism, with its emphasis on federal regulation of big business, was reborn in Franklin Roosevelt's first term, and Wilson's New Freedom, with its emphasis on antitrust policy, reemerged in his second term.

, thirty-second president of the United States . Roosevelt was the only president to be elected to more than two terms. Born in Hyde Park, New York, the only child of an old patrician family, Roosevelt was educated at Harvard and entered politics early. He served as assistant secretary of the navy in World War I and in 1920 ran unsuccessfully for vice president with Democratic presidential candidate James Cox. In 1921 he was partially paralyzed from an attack of poliomyelitis. Encouraged to reenter politics by his wife, Eleanor, Roosevelt won the governorship of New York by a narrow margin in 1928 and became the Democratic candidate for president in 1932 in the midst of the Great Depression. Forging a new Democratic coalition among urban voters, immigrants, young first-time voters, blacks, women, the working class, and the southern states, FDR defeated Herbert Hoover in a landslide. Roosevelt promised the American people in his inaugural address a New Deal . His buoyant personality helped restore the country's morale, and he and the many fresh faces he brought to Washington tackled problems of the economy with groundbreaking programs of public works, relief, and reform. Programs and agencies set up under the New Deal included the

Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945)
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882 at his parents' estate in Hyde Park, New York. His parents were members of the New York aristocracy. His father, James, was a country gentleman who made money in railroads and coal. His mother, Sara , was a strong-willed woman who adored her only child and remained a central figure in his life until her death in 1941. His father died in 1900. FDR’s childhood in Hyde Park instilled in him a love of the Hudson Valley, farming and rural people. His lifelong interest in forestry helped shape some of the policies and programs of the New Deal, particularly the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). After being educated at home by private tutors, FDR entered Groton, an elite private school in Massachusetts, in 1896. Endicott Peabody , the head of the school, became an important influence in FDR’s life instilling in him a strong sense of civic responsibility. One of the most significant events while he was at Groton was a talk given by his distant cousin

(Portrait) Franklin Roosevelt was the commander in chief during America's greatest war. Although the CIA was a postwar organization, Roosevelt recognized the importance of having a central office that could collate and distribute information. He appointed William J. Donovan the first head of the Office of Coordinator of Information, an organization that later evolved into the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). A week before Roosevelt died, he wrote a memorandum to then Maj. Gen. William Donovan authorizing him to continue planning for a postwar intelligence service.
"APROPOS OF YOUR MEMORANDUM of November 18, 1944, relative to the establishment of a central intelligence service, I should appreciate your calling together the chiefs of the foreign intelligence and internal security units in the various executive agencies, so that a consensus of opinion can be secured. "It appears to me that all of the ten executive departments, as well as the Foreign Economic Administration, and the Federal Communications Commission have a direct interest in the proposed venture. They should all be asked to contribute their suggestions to the proposed centralized intelligence service."
