"Perhaps no form of government," said Lord Bryce, "needs great leaders as much as democracy." For democracy is not self-executing. It takes leadership to bring democracy to life. Great democratic leaders are visionaries. They have an instinct for their nation's future, a course to steer, a port to seek. Through their capacity for persuasion, they win the consent of their people and call forth democracy's inner resources. David Ben-Gurion

Mao Zedong Categories Artists/Entertainers Builders/Titans Scientists/Thinkers Heroes/Icons Democracy has been around for a bit, but the 20th century has been the crucial century of its trial, testing and triumph. At the century's start, democracy was thought to be spreading irresistibly across the world. Then the Great War, the war of 1914-18, showed that democracy could not assure peace. Postwar disillusion activated democracy's two deadly foes: fascism and communism. Soon the Great Depression in the 1930s showed that democracy could not assure prosperity either, and the totalitarian creeds gathered momentum.

THE NAME OF FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT first appeared in TIME in our eighth issue, April 21, 1923. When he died in 1945 we said, "TIME has given far more space to recording the extraordinary career and achievements of Franklin Roosevelt than to any other man. Eight times he has appeared on our cover—three times as Man of the Year." Some highlights from our coverage of FDR: Twenty years ago F. D. Roosevelt took office as President of the Harvard Crimson. He has been a leading citizen ever since. Parallels are not hard to find with Theodore Roosevelt, whose neice he married. Both went to Harvard, to Albany, to the Navy Department on the eve of war, and both were shuttled into vice presidential candidates. Franklin is as good a Democrat as Theodore was a Republican.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt , a distant cousin of Theodore Roosevelt , was born in Hyde Park, New York on 30th January, 1882. The Roosevelts were a wealthy family and was educated by home tutors until attending Groton School at 14. He was a successful student and did well at Harvard University and Columbia Law Schools, before being admitted to the New York bar in 1907.
In 1905 Franklin married his cousin, Eleanor Roosevelt . Her father, Elliott Roosevelt, was the brother of Theodore Roosevelt , president of the United States (1901-1909). Like her husband, Eleanor was a Democrat and took a strong interest in politics.
In 1910 Roosevelt was elected to the New York Senate. Frances Perkins was one of those who was not impressed by his activities during this period: "Tall and slender, very active and alert, moving around the floor, going in and out of committee rooms, rarely talking with the members, not particularly charming (that came later), rarely smiling, with an unforunate habit - so natural he was unaware of it - of throwing his head up. This, combined with his pince-nez and great height, gave him the appearance of looking down his nose at most people."

Franklin D. Roosevelt
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born in Hyde Park, New York, on January 30, 1882, the son of James Roosevelt and Sara Delano Roosevelt. Nearly all of his early schooling was furnished by his parents, and tutors. He attended Groton, an upper-class preparatory school in Massachusetts, from 1896 to 1900, then received a BA degree in history from Harvard in just three years (1900-03). Roosevelt went on to study law at Columbia University in New York City. He left the university without receiving a degree when he passed the bar examination in 1907. For the next three years he practiced law with a prominent New York City firm. In 1905, Roosevelt married Anna Eleanor Roosevelt , a distant cousin and the niece of President Theodore Roosevelt . She would become Franklin's most influential ally and an active, beloved First Lady. The couple had six children, of whom five survived infancy. Roosevelt was a great companion to his children, especially enjoying outdoor sports with them. Political beginnings Roosevelt, a Democrat like his father, tried politics in 1910 and won a seat in the New York State Senate from his traditionally Republican home district. He flourished as a courageous and adroit political contender.
