GEM's ministry began in Romania in the late 1980s as several GEM missionaries made trips to Romania to teach theology before the 1989 Romanian Revolution. Following the fall of communism, several visits by veteran GEM missionaries as well as summer short-term teams led to the first long-term missionaries with GEM arriving in the summer of 1994 in Timisoara. Values of the GEM Romania Field (Romania Biblical Training and Ministry):
  • Equipping of the Body of Christ for ministry within Romania and beyond its boundaries: includes all forms of equipping, mentoring and discipleship. It does not necessarily mean replacing ourselves (i.e. TEFL teacher), but preparing others, through what we do, for various types of ministry. Includes not only nationals, but our own GEM missionaries in Romania as well (ministry skills development, contextualization of skills we already have, etc.) Partnership with Others : We are committed to collaboration with others to accomplish the task of filling Romania with vibrant and multiplying churches.

History The territory that is now Romania first appeared in history as Dacia. Most of its inhabitants were originally from the region of Thrace, in Greece; they were called Getae by the Greeks, and later, by the Romans, they were known as Dacians. Between 101 and 106 AD Dacia was conquered by the Roman emperor Trajan and incorporated into the Roman Empire as a province.

The oldest traces of human habitation in Romania date from the paleolithic (stone age) period. Settled communities whose residents engaged in hunting, agriculture and stock breeding appeared ten thousand years ago. During the second millenium B.C., the Romanian area was inhabited by the autonomous Thracians, an Indo-European people, who merged with the native population to produce the Dacian people. Tribes arose, federations were formed and small kingdoms emerged.
During the first century B.C. a strong independent Dacian Kingdom arose, centered in the Orastie Mountains of southern Transylvania, where it developed its political. economic and military center at Sarmisagetusa. It grew to include approximately the entire territory of modern Romania and established trading relations with the Greek cities founded on the Black Sea coast. An aristocratic class and a non-aristocratic, but free, class of citizens evolved, while slaves were used only on a small scale for domestic service.
The religion of the Thraco-Dacians was monotheistic and centered on the worshop of Zalmoxes and in the belief in the immortality of the soul. There superior religious ideas allowed Christianity to be easily accepted by the people when the new religion was introduced to them.

Back to Romania Government In the early 1970s, the PCR carried on a campaign to strengthen the Marxist character of its ideological, cultural, and educational activities. Within limits Ceausescu encouraged "socialist democracy" and open communication between the masses and the party leadership. He defined "socialist democracy" as a spirit of social responsibility among the citizens to perform their duties in accordance with the needs and imperatives of society as a whole. Socialist democracy sought to stimulate the masses to support the cause of socialism by involving them in PCR programs so that the individual citizen's goals and values coincided with those of the party. In the mid-1970s, Ceausescu announced a new ideological program and the tightening of party control over government, science, and cultural life. Some observers regarded this campaign as a response to Soviet criticism of Ceausescu's foreign policy. It may have been a reminder to Moscow that socialism was not endangered in Romania and that the Soviets could not use this pretext to justify intervention as they had done in Czechoslovakia in 1968. Others considered it an assertion of authority by Ceausescu to combat domestic ideological laxity and what he perceived as corrupting Western influences. Partially directed at the youth of the nation, the campaign included curbs on alcohol in the youth clubs and on the screening of foreign television programs and music.

    EARLY HISTORY
Man first appeared in the lands that now constitute Romania during the Pleistocene Epoch, a period of advancing and receding glacial ice that began about 600,000 years ago. Once the glaciers had withdrawn completely, a humid climate prevailed in the area and thick forests covered the terrain. During the Neolithic Age, beginning about 5500 B.C., Indo-European people lived in the region. The Indo-Europeans gave way to Thracian tribes, who in later centuries inhabited the lands extending from the Carpathian Mountains southward to the Adriatic and Aegean Seas. Today's Romanians are in part descended from the Getae, a Thracian tribe that lived north of the Danube River.
    The Getae
Originally polytheistic nature-worshippers, the Thraco-Getae developed a sun cult and decorated their artwork with sun symbols. Herodotus, a Greek historian, reports that the Getae worshipped a god named Zalmoxis, a healing thunder god who was master of the cloudy sky; however they did not depict Zalmoxis in any plastic form. The people offered agricultural products and animals as sacrifices and also cremated their dead, sealed the ashes in urns, and buried them. By about 300 B.C., the Lower Danube Getae had forged a state under the leadership of Basileus Dromichaites, who repulsed an attack by Lysimachus, one of Alexander the Great's successors. Thereafter, native Getian leaders protected the coastal urban centers, which had developed from Greek colonies. From 112 to 109 B.C. the Getae joined the Celts to invade Roman possessions in the western Balkans. Then in 72 B.C., the Romans launched a retaliatory strike across the Danube but withdrew because, one account reports, the soldiers were "frightened by the darkness of the forests." During the third and second centuries B.C., the Getae began mining local iron-ore deposits and iron metallurgy spread throughout the region. The ensuing development of iron plowshares and other implements led to expanded crop cultivation.

The territory of modern Romania was settled before the 7th Century BC by the Geto-Dacian peoples. From the 7th Century BC, the Greeks established trading colonies on the Black Sea coast which, along with the rest of the Greco-Dacian territory, was occupied by the Romans until 271 AD. Until the 10th Century, the area was populated by invading Goths, Huns, Avars, Slavs, Bulgars, and Hungarians, but the indigenous Romanians survived in village communities and by the 10th Century a feudal system had been established. From the 10th Century, Hungary occupied Transylvania which, by the 13th Century, was an autonomous Hungarian region though still containing a majority Romanian population. The regions of Moldavia and Wallachia were also targeted for Hungarian expansion but were incorporated into the Ottoman Empire by the 15th Century. In 1812, Russia seized an area of Moldavia from the Turks, but the remainder of Moldavia and Wallachia, with French assistance, united in 1859 under Alexandru Cuza, to form a national state which bore the name Romania from 1862. Cuza abdicated in 1866 to be succeeded by King Carol I, who in 1877 declared independence from the Ottoman Empire and expanded Romanian territory by taking Dobruja in 1878. Aiming to further extend its boundaries, Romania entered the First World War on the side of the Triple Entente (UK, France, and Russia). Immediate invasion by Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria followed; however, at the Versailles Peace Conference in 1919, Romania was awarded Transylvania and Bessarabia, bringing their ethnic Romanian populations within Romanian boundaries.

It's hard to put into words, but there's something about Romania and its people that draws me. There seems to be so much about Romania's history that is a microcosm of European/Balkan/Middle Eastern history that it's almost a touch point to understanding the mysteries of how our dominant civilizations have risen, developed, and aged over millennia." The history of the Roma is one of continuous struggle and persecution. Since their entry into Europe, the Roma have been outlawed, enslaved, hunted, tortured, and murdered. They are just a part of the rich Romanian history. The following is just a brief outline of the history of the people living between the Carpathian Mountains, the Danube and the Black Sea.
Due to its geographical location, Romania was always the meeting point of political and territorial interests. The Romans, and later the Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and Russian Empires tried in turn to take over this land. This makes Romanian History particularly interesting, as the local people always stood up against foreign occupation, managing to preserve its culture and traditions. Ancient History n the 7th and 6th Centuries B.C., the Greeks founded a number of colonies on the Black Sea shore. These were the ancient cities of Histria, Tomis and Callatis (now the modern Constanta and Mangalia). Herodot, the Greek historian of the time, was the first to mention the native inhabitants of the land. These were the Dacians, a branch of the people living in the Balkans, named Thracians. The Greeks and the Dacians lived peacefully, relying on trade and agriculture.
Five centuries later the supremacy of Greece declined, and a new power arose: the Romans. By this time, the Dacians were united for the first time under the authority of a wise ruler called Burebista. He founded a capital city in the heights of the Carpathian Mountains. Its ruins can still be seen today. The new city - Sarmizegetusa - was

SCIC AND THE ENLARGEMENT Romania Romanian History Romanian History Introduction Due to its geographical position , Romania is one of the easiest passable land routes between the Balkans, Moldova and the Ukraine. This has placed Romania in the path of many migrations and invasions throughout its history yet it has been the cultural imprint of one of the earliest invaders, the Romans, which has endured to the present day. The perpetuation of this cultural identity is even more interesting given the Romanian people have rarely been isolated from their Slavic and Finno-Ugric neighbours, particularly the Hungarians. The Dacians The Dacians, a Thracian tribe, were the first migrants in 200BC to what is present day Romania. Under King Burebista (82-44BC) the Dacians flourished and came to rule over the entire Thracian-Geto-Dacian world, extending from the Balkans to the Carpathian Mountains, to the ancient Dnestr River and the Tisza . With the fall of Burebista, the power of the Dacian state weakened until the rule of
