History Romania's history has not been as idyllically peaceful as its geography. Over the centuries, various migrating people invaded Romania. Romania's historical provinces Wallachia and Moldova offered furious resistance to the invading Ottoman Turks. Transylvania was successively under Hapsburg, Ottoman or Wallachian rule, while remaining an autonomous province.
Romania's post WWII history as a communist-block nation is more widely known, primarily due to the excesses of the former dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. In December 1989 a national uprising led to his overthrow. The 1991 Constitution established Romania as a republic with a multiparty system, market economy and individual rights of free speech, religion and private ownership. Recommended reading: Romania, An Illustrated History by Nicolae Klepper, - an insightful synthesis addressed to all those who want to learn about Romania's history, politics, culture, and society.

“An insightful and much-needed synthesis addressed to all those who want to understand Romanian history, politics, culture, and society.”
- Professor Vladimir Tismaneanu, University of Maryland,
author of Stalinism for All Seasons: A Political History of Romanian Communism As a country, Romania has only been in existence since 1859, but the history of its people stretches back to the late Bronze Age and the early Iron Age, to the Geto-Dacians and the Romans. This concise yet thorough narrative tells the fascinating story of the evolution of the Romanians, the creation of the Romanian Principalities, their struggle against empire-building powers, and their eventual unification to form the state of Romania. Many chapters begin with a section called “Perspective,” which provides context for Romanian history by describing events occurring simultaneously in other parts of Europe. The book’s engaging, accessible format features over eighty illustrations, maps, and charts. It is ideal for the student, traveler, or generally curious reader.

Romania.org : About Romania: Romanian History: by Ion Calafeteanu Part 2: The Medieval - Wallachia, Moldavia, Transylvania Beginning with the 10th century, the Byzantine, Slav and Hungarian sources, and later on the western sources mention the existence of statehood entities of the Romanian population - kniezates and voivodates - first in Transylvania and Dobrudja, then in the 12-13th centuries, also in the lands east and south of the Carpathians. A specific trait of the Romanian's history from the Middle Ages until the modern times is that they lived in three Principalities that were neighbours, but autonomous - Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania. The Church of Densus This phenomenon - which is by no means unique in Mediaeval Europe - is extremely complex. The underlying causes pertain to the essence of the feudal society, but there are also specific factors. Among the latter, we wish to mention the existence of powerful neighbouring empires, which opposed the unification of the Romanian state entities and even occupied - for shorter or longer periods of time - Romanian territories. For instance, to the west the Romanians had to face the policy of conquests conducted by the Hungarian kingdom. In 895, the Hungarian tribes, who came from the Volga lands, led by Arpad, settled in Pannonia. They were stopped in their progress towards the west by emperor Otto I (995) so the Hungarians settled down and turned their eyes to the south-east and east. There they encountered the Romanians.

    EARLY HISTORY
Man first appeared in the lands that now constitute Romania during the Pleistocene Epoch, a period of advancing and receding glacial ice that began about 600,000 years ago. Once the glaciers had withdrawn completely, a humid climate prevailed in the area and thick forests covered the terrain. During the Neolithic Age, beginning about 5500 B.C., Indo-European people lived in the region. The Indo-Europeans gave way to Thracian tribes, who in later centuries inhabited the lands extending from the Carpathian Mountains southward to the Adriatic and Aegean Seas. Today's Romanians are in part descended from the Getae, a Thracian tribe that lived north of the Danube River.
    The Getae
Originally polytheistic nature-worshippers, the Thraco-Getae developed a sun cult and decorated their artwork with sun symbols. Herodotus, a Greek historian, reports that the Getae worshipped a god named Zalmoxis, a healing thunder god who was master of the cloudy sky; however they did not depict Zalmoxis in any plastic form. The people offered agricultural products and animals as sacrifices and also cremated their dead, sealed the ashes in urns, and buried them. By about 300 B.C., the Lower Danube Getae had forged a state under the leadership of Basileus Dromichaites, who repulsed an attack by Lysimachus, one of Alexander the Great's successors. Thereafter, native Getian leaders protected the coastal urban centers, which had developed from Greek colonies. From 112 to 109 B.C. the Getae joined the Celts to invade Roman possessions in the western Balkans. Then in 72 B.C., the Romans launched a retaliatory strike across the Danube but withdrew because, one account reports, the soldiers were "frightened by the darkness of the forests." During the third and second centuries B.C., the Getae began mining local iron-ore deposits and iron metallurgy spread throughout the region. The ensuing development of iron plowshares and other implements led to expanded crop cultivation.

    Before Moldavia was founded
In the centuries before Moldavia was founded the northern regions were probably populated by a mixture of Vlachs and Slavs, the Slavs having migrated south from the Ukraine. Most of the regions east of the Carpathians were at this time under the rule of the Cumans which lasted until the Mongol attacks of the mid 14th century. The place names in northern Moldavia give an indication of the extent of the early Slavic population by the -ăuţi ending to Romanian place names, most of which have the -ovcy ending in their Ukrainian name. Interestingly, villages with the Romanian ending - eşti have a distribution through Moldavia up to the line of Slavic place names. There are occasional references that might indicate the presence of Slavs and Romanians before the founding of Moldavia. In 1247 a Franciscan monk, Giovanni da Pian del Carpine, met a Romanian voivode called Olaha who is thought to have been in Moldavia. In the second Dacian war (105AD) the west of Oltenia became part of the Roman Dacian province with the rest of Wallachia in Moesia Inferior. The Roman fortification Limes (patrol road with wooden lookout towers and forts at intervals) were initially along the Olt (119AD) and later in the 2nd century moved slightly east, from the Danube up to Rucar in the Carpathians mountains. The Roman line fell back to the Olt in 245AD, and in 271AD the Romans pulled out of the region.
    Post Roman period of migrations
Much of the area of modern Romania had post Roman populations with elements of Goths, Dacians, and Sarmatian peoples know as the Mures-Cerneahov culture followed by waves of migratory tribes. In 328 AD the Romans built a bridge between Sucidava (Celei) and Oescus (Gigen) which indicates that there was a significant trade with the peoples north of the Danube. The Goths attacked the Roman empire south of the Danube in 332 AD, settling north of the Danube then later to the south. The period of Goth rule ended when the Huns arrived in the area of modern Hungary and under Attila they attacked and destroyed some 170 settlements on both sides of the Danube.

The Romanian people and its place in Europe
Romania is situated in SE Central Europe, north of the Balkan Peninsula. With an area of 238,391 sq.km, the country has today a population of over 22 million people, 90% of whom are Romanians. Geographically, Romania is defined by the Carpathian Mountains, the river Danube and the Black Sea. On either side of the Carpathians lie the three major historical regions, Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania, which united in the Modern Age to form Romania. Along with Frenchmen, Italians, Spaniards and the Portuguese, the Romanians belong to the family of Romance peoples. The Romanian people came into being like the other peoples of the same family, and is defined by three ethnic elements having different shares: the old, native element - the Dacians, the conquering element, i.e. the Romans, and the migratory element. Obviously, the most important is the Roman one, which lends personality to the whole family. In ancient times the Romanian territory was called Dacia, after the name of its inhabitants. In the 1

The first material testimonies attest to the existence of man on present-day Romanian soil since 2,000,000 years ago (Bugiulesti, Valcea County). The originality of the cultural area, related to the other European prehistorical cultures can be noted in the art of clay moulding (the painted vessels of Cris, Turdas, Cucuteni, the zoomorphic and anthropomorphic clay statuettes. To mention only "The Thinker", discovered at Hamangia (Cernavoda), "The Clay Tables of Tartaria" (incised pictorial motifs), which all point to the existence of an early archaic writing - the first in Europe - around the year 4,000 B.C. This alphabet dates to about the same period as the Sumerian writing. The continuators of this ancient civilization were the Geto-Dacians.
    Archaeology
The history of archaeological research begins in the 19th century. A distinct place is held by Alexandru Odobescu, who supported and encouraged the first systematic archaeological diggings in Romania, as he organized and coordinated the national Museum of Antiquities of the Bucharest University, where he also was the first professor to teach archaeology. One of his important works is the description of the Pietroasa Treasure Trove (1900, 3 volumes) which is also called "The Hen with Brood" and which is currently at the National History Museum in Bucharest.

This concise yet thorough narrative tells the fascinating story of the evolution of the Romanians, the creation of the Romanian Principalities, their struggle against empire-building powers, and their eventual unification to form the state of Romania. Many chapters begin with a section called "Perspective," which provides context for Romanian history by describing events occurring simultaneously in other parts of Europe.
