History Man first appeared in the lands that now constitute Romania during the Pleistocene Epoch, a period of advancing and receding glacial ice that began about 600,000 years ago. Once the glaciers had withdrawn completely, a humid climate prevailed in the area and thick forests covered the terrain. During the Neolithic Age, beginning about 5500 B.C., Indo-European people lived in the region. The Indo-Europeans gave way to Thracian tribes, who in later centuries inhabited the lands extending from the Carpathian Mountains southward to the Adriatic and Aegean Seas. Today's Romanians are in part descended from the Getae, a Thracian tribe that lived north of the Danube River. The Getae Originally polytheistic nature-worshippers, the Thraco-Getae developed a sun cult and decorated their artwork with sun symbols. Herodotus, a Greek historian, reports that the Getae worshipped a god named Zalmoxis, a healing thunder god who was master of the cloudy sky; however they did not depict Zalmoxis in any plastic form. The people offered agricultural products and animals as sacrifices and also cremated their dead, sealed the ashes in urns, and buried them. By about 300 B.C., the Lower Danube Getae had forged a state under the leadership of Basileus Dromichaites, who repulsed an attack by Lysimachus, one of Alexander the Great's successors. Thereafter, native Getian leaders protected the coastal urban centers, which had developed from Greek colonies. From 112 to 109 B.C. the Getae joined the Celts to invade Roman possessions in the western Balkans. Then in 72 B.C., the Romans launched a retaliatory strike across the Danube but withdrew because, one account reports, the soldiers were "frightened by the darkness of the forests." During the third and second centuries B.C., the Getae began mining local iron-ore deposits and iron metallurgy spread throughout the region. The ensuing development of iron plowshares and other implements led to expanded crop cultivation.

Kurt Treptow, an American who lives in Romania, was scheduled to present the digital history project along with his book, "A History of Romania," at the National Digital Library of the Library of Congress. But the presentation was scrapped when B'nai B'rith and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum raised objections about Treptow with the Library of Congress and the Romanian Embassy, which co-sponsored the event. George Spectre, associate director of the B'nai B'rith Center for Public Policy, called Treptow a revisionist historian whose main goal is the vindication and rehabilitation of the World War II-era Iron Guard in Romania. Treptow's writings, Spectre added, attempt to exonerate the Iron Guard leaders who were responsible for pogroms and anti-Jewish legislation, similar to the Nuremberg Laws of Nazi Germany.

Linux, Unix and Open Source History in Romania The history of Unix and open source systems in Romania can be divided in the following phases: 19801990 Samizdat phase During the last decade of the Ceausescu's rule computers could only be found in computing centers of large enterprises and institutes. State-owned enterprises were manufacturing clones of PDP-11 machines, mostly running RSX, clones of IBM-360 running OS/360 (yes! in 1980!) and microcomputers with Z80 processors running CP/M-80 from a floppy. Some of the later (for example CUB-Z) were actually desktop sized. Personal computers were traded on a limited gray market and were mostly ZX Spectrum clones, some of them fitted with various floppy disk solutions, with some locally developed operating system. A very limited batch of diskette-based IBM-PC clones were manufactured starting around 1988. Some PDP-like machines running Unix V7 or similar are rumored to have been used in communications companies. The C programming language made a bit of a splash on CP/M and Spectrum clones in the late eighties and it came with rumours about what Unix is about. Eventually, around 1986, a source distribution of Unix V7 became available in a samizdat form. Z80 computers, of course could not be fitted with it. All efforts to develop anything had to be private as attempts to establish any comercial enterprise, even on a small scale, were against la laws of the communist state.

The second son of the Prussian prince, Leopold of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, he was designated successor to the heirless Carol I in 1880. In 1893 he married Marie , daughter of Alfred, duke of Edinburgh and of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (and granddaughter of Queen Victoria and Czar Alexander II.) Although related to the German imperial family, Ferdinand took Romania (1916) into World War I on the Allied side, and in 1922 he was crowned king of the enlarged Romania established by the peace treaties. Ferdinand annexed (1918) Bessarabia from Russia and in 1919 ordered the Romanian military intervention in Hungary that broke up the Communist government of BEla Kun .
