You'll be floored at how different it is, but you'll almost certainly see signs that it's chasing the dreams of the rest of the West. Romania is clawing itself forward, slowly and surely sloughing off the remnants of the Ceausescu era.

    Romania's History
    Began with the Dacian Empire

Romanians trace their history back to 300 B.C. But Romania did not become an independent, unified country until 1861. During most of the time in-between, various foreign peoples ruled all or part of Romania.
In the years from 300 to 400 B.C., Dacian people farmed, mined gold and iron ore, and traded with neighboring peoples.
Romania was called "Dacia" during this period.
The Romans, under Emperor Trajan, conquered Dacia in A.D. 106, and made it a province of the Roman Empire. Roman soldiers occupied Dacia, and Roman colonists settled there. The Romans intermarried with the Dacians, who adopted Roman customs and the Latin language. Dacia became known as Romania because of the Roman occupation and influence. Barbarians from the east and north began invading Romania during the A.D. 200's. They forced the Romans to abandon the province in the late 200's. The invasions were to continue off and on until the 1100's. The invaders included Bulgars, Goths, Huns, Magyars, Slavs, and Tartars. These groups, especially the Slavs, intermarried with the Romanians. Next followed the unification movement. The period of invasions slowed the development of Romania into a unified nation. For hundreds of years, various groups fought for control of the region, and no one group gained full control. The first steps toward unification took place between 1250 and 1350. The people of Walachia, a region in southern Romania, gradually united and formed an independent state under a single ruler. The people of Moldavia, in eastern Romania, did the same. A prince ruled each state, and so they were called principalities.

      History
[edit this] [Upload image] From about 200 B.C. when it was settled by the Dacians a Thracian tribe Romania has been on the path of a series of migrations and conquests. Under the emperor Trajan early in the second century A.D. Dacia was incorporated into the Roman empire but was abandoned by a declining Rome less than two centuries later. Romania disappeared from recorded history for hundreds of years to reemerge in the medieval period as the Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. Heavily taxed and badly administered under the Ottoman empire the two Principalities were unified under a single native prince in 1859 and had their full independence ratified in the 1878 Treaty of Berlin. A German prince Carol of Hohenzollern was crowned first King of Romania in 1881. The new state squeezed between the Ottoman Austro-Hungarian and Russian empires with Slav neighbors on three sides looked to the West particularly France for its cultural educational and administrative models. Romania was an ally of the Entente and theU.S.in World War I and was granted substantial territories with Romanian populations notably Transylvania Bessarabia and Bukovina after the war. Most of Romania's pre-World War II governments maintained the forms but not the substance of a liberal constitutional monarchy. The quasi-mystical fascist Iron Guard movement exploiting nationalism fear of communism and resentment of alleged foreign and Jewish domination of the economy was a key factor in the creation of a dictatorship in 1938. In 1940-41 the authoritarian General Antonescu took control. Romania entered World War II on the side of the Axis Powers in June 1941 invading the Soviet Union to recover Bessarabia and Bukovina which had been annexed in 1940.

Romania occupies, roughly, ancient Dacia , which was a Roman province in the 2d and 3d cent. A.D. The ethnic character of modern Romania seems to have been formed in the Roman period; Christianity was introduced at that time as well. After the Romans left the region, the area was overrun successively by the Goths, the Huns, the Avars, the Bulgars, and the Magyars. Michael the Brave of Walachia defied both the Ottoman sultan and the Holy Roman emperor and at the time of his death (1601) controlled Moldavia, Walachia, and Transylvania. However, Michael's empire soon fell apart. An ill-fated alliance (1711) of the princes of Moldavia and Walachia with Peter I of Russia led to Turkish domination of Romania. Until 1821 the Turkish sultans appointed governors, or hospodars, usually chosen from among the Phanariots (see under Phanar ), Greek residents of Constantinople. The governors and their subordinates reduced the Romanian people (except for a few great landlords, the boyars) to a group of nomadic shepherds and poor, enserfed peasants.

The President and his wife were captured, quickly tried and executed. The new government, under the provisional leadership of Ion Iliescu (the former Communist Central Committee Secretary) was faced with a number of acute problems: the pacification of the country; the disbanding of the Securitate The ruling National Salvation Front eventually split into two factions led by Petre Roman, Prime Minister for 18 months in 1990 and 1991, and President Iliescu, who formed his own breakaway party, the Democratic National Salvation Front (later renamed the Social Democratic Party of Romania). Over the next decade, it was the Social Democrats who prevailed while the Roman faction dwindled away. However, at the November 1996 elections, the Social Democrats lost control of both the presidency and the national assembly, to a five-party center-right alliance entitled the Democratic Convention of Romania (DCR).
