Geography
Romania
Romania is situated in the South-Eastern part of Central Europe at the contact with Eastern Europe and the Balkan peninsula. It stretches between a latitude of 43 deg 37"07'N & 48 deg 15"06'N, and between longitude 20 deg 15"44' & 29 deg 41"24'E. It lies at the intersection of the 45N parallel and the 25E meridian. Lying at the crossroads of the major links of communication between the Western and Eastern worlds, Romania has always been in an important geopolitical zone for the stability of the whole continent. With a surface area of 238,391 sq km (4.8% of Europe), Romania ranks in position 11 for continental Europe and 79 in the World. Its population of 22.8 million (95 inhabitants / sq km) is formed of Romanians (89.5%), Hungarians (7.1%), Germans (0.5%) and other nationalities (1.1%). The official language, Romanian, is of Latin origin. Romania is a republic. The head of state - the President - is elected by direct ballot. The capital city, Bucharest, has approximately 2,000 000 inhabitants. The relief is distributed almost equally between mountains (31%), hills and tablelands (36%) and the plains (31%). The mountain area is dominated by the Carpathian range (maximum altitude at the Moldoveanu Peak of 2,544 m) - which is a South-Eastward extension of the Alps; it shelters the Transylvanian Depression in the centre.

Updated 228 days 4 hours 43 minutes ago. Other descriptions of Geography of Romania Extending inland halfway across the Balkan Peninsula and covering a large elliptical area of 237,499 square kilometers (91,699 sq. mi.), Romania occupies the greater part of the lower basin of the Danube River system and the hilly eastern regions of the middle Danube basin. It lies on either side of the mountain systems collectively known as the Carpathians, which form the natural barrier between the two Danube basins. Romania's location gives it a continental climate, particularly in the Old Kingdom (east of the Carpathians and south of the Transylvanian Alps ) and to a lesser extent in Transylvania, where the climate is more moderate. A long and at times severe winter (December-March), a hot summer (April-July), and a prolonged autumn (August-November) are the principal seasons, with a rapid transition from spring to summer. In

Romania began the transition from Communism in 1989 with a largely obsolete industrial base and a pattern of output unsuited to the country's needs. The country emerged in 2000 from a punishing three-year recession thanks to strong demand in EU export markets.

Southeastern Europe, bordering the Black Sea, between Bulgaria and Ukraine.
There is a certain symmetry in the physical structure of Romania.
The country forms a complex geographic unit centred on the Transylvanian Basin, around which the peaks of the Carpathian Mountains and their associated subranges and structural platforms form a series of crescents. Beyond this zone, the extensive plains of the south and east of the country, their potential increased by the Danube and its tributaries, form a fertile outer crescent extending to the frontiers.
There is great diversity in the topography, geology, climate, hydrology, flora, and fauna, and for millennia this natural environment has borne the imprint of a human population.
Since the late 19th century, in particular, Romania has undergone an economic and social transformation from an agricultural society to an urbanized, industrial society.

Rural Geography Identifying characteristics of the cultural landscape - rural settlements. The field area The Calimanesti element of the fieldwork programme and the fieldwork excursions to southern Transylvania and eastwards towards Brasov and Bucharest provide us with the opportunity to pass through a variety of culturally complex culture areas and landscapes. We can expect to find significant variations in the characteristics of rural settlements between Calimanesti and Sibiu or between Bucharest and Brasov. Both these journeys involve moving between the northern Wallachian plain and the southern edge of the Transylvanian plateau. Both journeys involve crossing ancient borders (significantly the interface of the Austro-Hungarian empire and the Ottoman empire) and crossing the massively important Carpathian mountain range. Rural landscape Geographers have traditionally studied three important aspects of the rural landscape. These are: the pattern of rural settlement field patterns house or farmstead characteristics Much work was done by European geographers in the early years of this century to categorise rural settlements. It is noteworthy that patterns laid down over 800 years ago are still seen reflected in the landscape of today. Romania is in an important position within Europe with respect to all three of the above aspects.
