INTRODUCTION
Background: Soviet occupation following World War II led to the formation of a Communist "peoples republic" in 1947 and the abdication of the king. The decades-long rule of dictator Nicolae CEAUSESCU and his Securitate police state became increasingly oppressive and draconian through the 1980s. CEAUSESCU was overthrown and executed in late 1989. Former communists dominated the government until 1996 when they were swept from power by a fractious coalition of center-right parties. Currently, the Social Democratic Party forms a nominally minority government, which governs with the support of the opposition Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania. Much economic restructuring remains to be carried out before Romania can achieve its hope of joining the European Union. TOP OF PAGE

    Climate: Moderate.
    Geography of Romania
Extending inland halfway across the Balkan Peninsula and covering a large elliptical area of 237,499 square kilometers (91,699 sq. mi.), Romania occupies the greater part of the lower basin of the Danube River system and the hilly eastern regions of the middle Danube basin. It lies on either side of the mountain systems collectively known as the Carpathians, which form the natural barrier between the two Danube basins. Romania's location gives it a continental climate, particularly in the Old Kingdom (east of the Carpathians and south of the Transylvanian Alps) and to a lesser extent in Transylvania, where the climate is more moderate. A long and at times severe winter (December-March), a hot summer (April-July), and a prolonged autumn (August-November) are the principal seasons, with a rapid transition from spring to summer. In Bucharest, the daily minimum temperature in January averages -7oC (20oF), and the daily maximum temperature in July averages 29oC (85oF).

GEOGRAPHY OF ROMANIA Romania (238,391 km2) lies in the south-east of Central Europe, in the lower basin of Danube River, with access to the Black Sea. The capital of Romania is Bucharest, the biggest city of the country, with a population of over two million inhabitants, according to the latest census. Romania is neighboring Hungary and Serbia in the west, Ukraine in the North and North-East, Moldova Republic in East and Bulgaria in the South. Romania has access to the Black Sea, an invaluable link to other countries in the region: Turkey, Russia, Ukraine and trans-Caucasian countries, as well as the Mediterranean Sea, by Bosfor straits. Romania lies between 43-37-07 and 48-15-06 degrees north latitude and between 20-15- 44 and 29-49-24 east longitude, being crossed by parallel 45 N and meridian 25 E. Plains and hills occupy 69% of the total surface of the country, while the Carpathian Mountains (highest peak: Moldoveanu-2,544 m) occupy the rest of 31%. Romania has a continental climate, with oceanic influences in the west, Mediterranean influences in southwest and excessive continental influences in northeast. The oldest subsoil resources in Romania were gold and silver. Nowadays, the extractions include natural gas, iron, gold, silver, bauxite, salt and other non-metal resources. Mineral waters and thermal waters are also important resources, especially in the west and center areas.
