16. As a result, Romania's mostly Jewish and draft-age avant-garde left immediately for Switzerland. Like Janco, who went to Zurich to complete his education as an architect at the technical university, Tzara most likely chose that city for its neutrality. More customary for the study of architecture among youth from eastern Europe (especially Jews) was Darmstadt, which was in warring Germany, a country with which Romania was still formally allied. 18. A case in point is Transylvania, which had lain technically outside Romania until December 1918. Among the many "foreign" artists there, primarily Magyars and Germans, whose powerful Expressionist work exerted significant influence (especially in Oradea, the Banat, Brasov, Timisoara, and Cluj) were Hans Eder (1883-1955), Imre Nagy (1893-1976), and Leon Pascu (1895-1948). The Transylvanian figure most important to Romania's modernist culture, Hans Mattis-Teutsch, is discussed below; however, for an examination of the central role played by Mattis-Teutsch in the Hungarian avant-garde and between the modern movements in Hungary and Romania, see S. A. Mansbach, Standing in the Tempest: Painters of the Hungarian Avant-Garde, 1908-1930, (Cambridge, Mass.: M.I.T. Press, 1991), 57, 122-23, 173, 180.

Romania, China Sign Culture Cooperation Agreement
The Chinese and Romanian governments signed a culture cooperation agreement for 2001-2004 in the Romanian capital of Bucharest on Friday.
The accord was signed by Chinese Vice Culture Minister Ai Qingchun and Mihai Razvan Unguleanu, state secretary of the Romanian Foreign Ministry, on behalf of their respective governments.
The signing of the new culture cooperation agreement between the two governments was an important event in their bilateral relations, said Unguleanu after the signing ceremony. Through the concerted efforts of both sides, culture exchanges between the two countries have expanded to include new areas and have been playing a positive role in deepening the friendly cooperative relations between the two countries and two peoples, the state secretary added. For his part, Ai said the agreement was a new one oriented to the new century, and he expressed the hope that cultural exchanges between the two countries would be further strengthened.

From Dracula Tour 26 August 2000
Author's Note: I have been working most of the past week on my Hungary / Transylvania page, but the deeper I dug, the more I realized how interwoven these two countries are, especially when it comes to Transylvania, which both claim. Thus, I must continue with a page for Romania.... Unlike the Hungarians, as far as we can tell, the peoples who would later be known as Romanians, arrived in Europe as shepherds, not warriors. They were a peaceful nomadic people, caring for their own flocks as well as the herds of others. To the many rulers of the lands in which they lived, they were simply serfs, easily overlooked. As one musicologist has noted: Hungarians dance in boots, Romanians dance in sandals. Romanians are a quiet, earthy, smiling people who have suffered much but have never been broken. As with so many peoples of Central and East Europe, history has not been kind to the Romanians. When they gain the upper hand, they in turn have not been kind; and when they have lost that power, they suffer all over again.
