Gypsy Musicians Gypsy Musicians The soul of Romanian traditional music can be typified by the daring improvisations of the gypsy violinist, the bold rhythmic inventions of the dulcimer player, and the dizzying chromatic inflections of the accordion.Unfortunately, today, it is rare to hearauthentic old-style Romanian gypsy material.Any group that must rely on its livelihood as a performing musical ensemble will inevitably begin to absorb modern material, which in urban areas such as Bucharest or Timisoara will include Serbian,Bulgarian, Turkish, jazz, pop and rock influences. While this is a natural progression in many indigenous musical traditions, the seeker of Romanian traditional music will have to rely more and more on reissued recordings of past masters. below: George Udila, clarinet, and ensemble, Bucharest, 1999. Romania History and Culture
History The territory that is now Romania first appeared in history as Dacia. Most of its inhabitants were originally from the region of Thrace, in Greece; they were called Getae by the Greeks, and later, by the Romans, they were known as Dacians. Between 101 and 106 AD Dacia was conquered by the Roman emperor Trajan and incorporated into the Roman Empire as a province.

Fallout from Communism in the form of high unemployment, low morale and deep despair has contributed to corruption and moral vacancy and has affected Romania’s people dramatically. Working in conjunction with Fundatia Noi Orizonturi ( New Horizons Foundation ), Dave Nonnemacher will lead this program and help students to explore this magical and deeply moving place. This program is open to all NWC students. Return to top Location Romania is a country of great contrasts and paradoxes—full of great beauty and vast suffering, rich mythology and hard truths. It is a land of majestic mountains, medieval castles and the legend of Dracula. Yet, in the Jiu Valley, the depressed coal-mining region which serves as the base for this program, one will see firsthand the devastating effects of Communism. Participants will spend much of their time in this area, in the city of Lupeni, where they will have the opportunity to live with a Romanian host family and engage Romanian youth through the service-learning project. Lupeni is located in the southeastern area of Romania, approximately 200 miles from Bucharest, the capital of Romania. Participants will also spend some time in Bucharest and surrounding villages.

The political and economic changes that took place in Romania in the 1980s and 1990s made daily life difficult for ordinary citizens. Economic reforms and subsequent economic expansion, especially after 2000, have improved living standards for some, although many rural areas have seen few improvements. Food prices remain high relative to the country’s low minimum wage, and relatively few Romanians can afford luxuries. One-family homes are common in Romania’s villages, while most city dwellers live in one-family apartments. Most apartment buildings were built during the communist era and are cramped with minimal facilities. Romanian food reflects a wide number of influences, including French, Greek, Russian, and Turkish. Popular Romanian dishes include

"Romania participated in the Holocaust, and we have to face history," the minister, Razvan Teodorescu, said at a ceremony marking the inauguration of a teaching manual on the Holocaust. But tensions resurfaced in July when Romanian President Ion Iliescu was quoted by an Israeli paper as saying, "the Holocaust was not unique to the Jewish population in Europe. Many others, including Poles, died in the same way."

At its meeting on Wednesday, the legal commission in the Romanian Senate has examined the opportunity of a new draft law on fighting corruption. Justice Minister Valeriu Stoica has attended the meeting. The project is an attempt to present a new concept extending the corruption charges from the public to the private sector, minister Stoica said at the end of the meeting. He has criticised the Magistrates' Supreme Council for failing to take its obligations seriously. RADOR While attending a meeting of the human rights commission in the Senate, Justice Minister Valeriu Stoica said that Romanian judges were doing only what they wanted to do, in defiance of any good sense. It is inconceivable that a man who steals a hen may be sentenced to prison while people stealing millions are free in defiance of the public opinion, Mr Stoica said.

    http://www.romania.fi/arts.html
Arts The scope and brilliancy of the frescoes at the monasteries of Voronet, Moldovita, Sucevita, Arbore, Humor, or Patrauti made the great Byzantine culture scholar Grabar consider this artistic phenomenon “an illustrated book open on all its pages.” Preserving the ties with the Byzantine stock, the culture of the Modern Age manifests an increasing tendency to follow the European artistic movements which send in turn echoes of the Renaissance, Romanticist, Academist, or Impressionistic trends. After the 1859 union of Wallachia and Moldavia, the foundations were laid in Iasi and Bucharest for artistic higher education, which would decisively contribute to the development of arts in Romania. Modern Romanian sculpture has been marked by Constantin Brancusi, the man who initiated the restructuring of the world’s sculptural language in this century. Interested in the fundamental problems of form and expression, Brancusi undertakes a careful examination of the cultural precedents, going down to the “dawn of archetypes” where he discovers the pure, essential and fully significant form. Romanian-born French sculptor Constantin Brancusi chose the egg as the dominant structure for his sculptures. Many of his creations, such as the numerous sculptures he made of Mademoiselle Pogany, share the egg's smooth, oblong shape and simplicity. Brancusi liked to simplify his subject to its purest and most basic form. He is considered a forerunner of modern abstract sculpture because of his overriding interest in the inner form of his subject rather than its exterior appearance.

    The Moldovans:
Romania, Russia, and the Politics of Culture By Charles King
    303 pages
January 2000 The first English-language book to present a complete picture of this intriguing East European borderland, The Moldovans: Romania, Russia, and the Politics of Culture , illuminates the perennial problems of identity politics and cultural change that the country has endured. Throughout the past two centuries, Moldova was the object of a variety of culture-building efforts from Russian, Romanian, and Soviet influences before emerging as a independent state in 1991. The author
    • Highlights the political uses of culture—the ways in which language, history, and identity can be manipulated by political elites Examines why some attempts to mold identity succeed where others fail Reveals why, in the case of Moldova, a project of identity construction succeeded in creating a state but failed to make an independent nation
"Thoroughly researched, engagingly written, and completely up to date, this is a definitive book that will long serve as the best study of Moldova in any language . . . . Its strategic and precarious location between the Balkans and the former Soviet Union and its complex ethnic composition make Moldova a fragile new nation well worth knowing about." Daniel Chirot, Professor of International Studies

Politics and Symbols in Romania Tom Kelleher Old Sturbridge Village, Sturbridge, Massachusetts A few years ago I spent a month in Romania under an International Partnerships Among Museums exchange. Most of my time was spent at the Muzeul Astra, a large open-air museum of Romania's rural folk culture with over 300 exhibits. There were opportunities to visit many other open-air museums in that beautiful but poor country. After closing down organizations devoted to folk culture during the 1950s due to "ideological problems," during the 1960s the communist government began to found folk museums of its own to document and portray traditional rural Romanian folklife. With massive government attempts to urbanize the agrarian society, these folk museums were envisioned as a way to preserve the peasant lifeways that the government hoped to eradicate. Today most Romanians still live in small villages, and even in the cities many people are directly tied to their food supply. Many urban as well as rural Romanians still grow vegetables, raise livestock, and get around by horse or ox cart. When a colleague from Romania first visited Old Sturbridge Village, he was amused to see a crowd of American visitors fascinated by a team of oxen. When I asked him what was so funny, he replied, "this would never work in my country! 'So what? It's a cow! I have a cow at home.'" In Romania's folk museums the staff do not understand why I ask them what time period they represent. They do not so much represent a time period or multiple time periods, but what they perceive as a timeless rural patrimony of folk culture. They may portray different regions or ethnic groups, but time is largely irrelevant to them. In the countryside, people often live as their ancestors have for centuries. They may well have a television but indoor plumbing, and the cattle stall, may be the room next to the bedroom.
