Romania's Culture
Born of Hardship and Survival
Romania's culture reflects the country's early, turbulent history. Because life for the Romanian people has been a struggle throughout history, many traditions revolve around "essential life moments" such as birth, marriage and death. The Romanians are one of history's greatest survivors, and despite numerous invasions and occupations, Romanian culture has remained intact. Vibrant festivals to celebrate important occasions and holidays often are observed in colorful costumes and with the lilting, joyful folk music that is uniquely Romanian.
Symbolism is Prominent in Most Celebrations
Baptism:
Children are baptised soon after birth in a traditional church ceremony. The ritual requires that the godparents bathe the child immediately after the priest performs the baptism rite. In the water, the godparents place a small amount of money as well as rice and basil, which signifies riches, plenty of food, and a "sweet" life. In a custom to fortell the child's future, at seven months after birth the child is positioned to choose between a book, a pencil and an egg. It is said that the child who chooses the book will become an intellectual, one who chooses a pencil will exhibit artistic skills, and one who chooses the egg will focus on materialistic pursuits.
Weddings: Romanians customarily marry in their early 20s. The "wedding season" is in the fall, when wine is aged and plentiful. No weddings may take place during the 40 days leading up to Christmas or Easter. Some rural communities still employ matchmakers to unite the prospective families. Where a matchmaker isn't used, tradition requires that the man's parents ask the woman's parents for their consent for the marriage. The groom's family visits village homes with plum brandy ("tzuica") to invite neighbors to the wedding. All partake in the toast, for to refuse is equivalent to turning down the invitation to the wedding. The godparents from their baptism, or newly appointed ones, are joined with the bridal family at the church celebration, and for the reception, which lasts all night. In the past, the wedding party would continue for three days and nights.

Care For Children and Teach English to Youth

Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java(tm). Teach English to teens and young adults in school classrooms, or care for infants in a "special needs" ward in this old-world Eastern European country.
You don't need special skills to teach conversational English skills, or to nurture a disabled or abandoned baby. No matter the circumstances of their birth, infants, toddlers and teens understand the nurturing touch and kind words of a caring adult. Deserving children in our Romanian host communities eagerly await your help today. "We thank you for all you have done ...
The children live because the volunteers keep coming."
~ Dr. Delia Asoltanei, Tutova Hospital Romania Volunteer Program Dates Romania Volunteer Work Projects Nothing says "love" like a child's smile! In Tutova, you can help feed and care for babies who arrive at the "failure-to-thrive ward" shortly after birth. Each day, volunteers stimulate, love and nurture them in a way a parent would. Just playing with these children will make a huge difference in their lives. And you will benefit from the healing smiles and warm hugs of your small charges. Physicians can also be helpful, but note: flexibility is key, as equipment and medicine are scarce throughout this country.

You'll be floored at how different it is, but you'll almost certainly see signs that it's chasing the dreams of the rest of the West. Horse-drawn carts jostle for space against fast cars whose drivers are talking money on mobile phones; farm workers watch Baywatch on satellite in their medieval farmhouses. Romania is clawing itself forward, slowly and surely sloughing off the remnants of the Ceausescu era.

CULTURE The Romanian language, although developing over the centuries in difficult historical conditions, is as Latin as any other Romance language and, like the culture as a whole, continues to exhibit a remarkable vitality. This fact is perhaps paralleled by some of the Modernist tendencies in the Romanian fine arts: the sculptor Constantin Brancusi, a promoter of absolute Modernism coupled with a firm sense of classical Mediterranean values, had great international influence early in the 20th century. Romanian poets and writers, too, have operated in a cultural tradition somewhat different from that in neighbouring countries; in architecture, the Bucharest television centre is but one example of another Modernist trend.

The President and his wife were captured, quickly tried and executed. The new government, under the provisional leadership of Ion Iliescu (the former Communist Central Committee Secretary) was faced with a number of acute problems: the pacification of the country; the disbanding of the Securitate The ruling National Salvation Front eventually split into two factions led by Petre Roman, Prime Minister for 18 months in 1990 and 1991, and President Iliescu, who formed his own breakaway party, the Democratic National Salvation Front (later renamed the Social Democratic Party of Romania). Over the next decade, it was the Social Democrats who prevailed while the Roman faction dwindled away. However, at the November 1996 elections, the Social Democrats lost control of both the presidency and the national assembly, to a five-party center-right alliance entitled the Democratic Convention of Romania (DCR).

A very eventful last few days. How many of you knew that Friday was International Women's Day? Not much celebrated in the US or UK, but a big deal here, a combination of Mothers' Day, Secretaries' Day, and International Women's Day. Apparently a lot of businesses (especially those where the women are mostly in clerical capacities) give their female staff the day off. In our office it was a half-hour break in the afternoon where everyone regardless of gender had some home-made wine, chocolates, cookies (that's sweet biscuits to the Brits). The women did get served first, and everyone drank a toast to them. Probably this scaled-down version is a consequence of the fact that the women in this office, while fewer in number than the men, certainly hold equally responsible jobs. Friday evening, my friend Adrian Mihalache had the launch party for his new book, subtitled, effectively, "An Introduction to Cyberculture" [the title is something of a play on words, between "naviga" - navigate - and "gând" / gand - thought, imagination, mind]. (You can find plenty by and about Adrian on the web, in several languages: just Google his name. He's a high tech type and very much a web culture person, as you might guess from the subtitle of his book. As for the book, if you use Microsoft e-books and you read Romanian, you can

Romania culture observations
As I've been here, I've collected a few observations about Romanian culture (caveat... This is based on Iasi). I don't have much to say about these observations except that I had them:
  • Dance/electronica music is very popular. I've heard it almost everywhere I've been.
There's this pungent, but pleasant smell I've experienced in lots of places (hotels, bathrooms, soap, cabs)... I can't place it but it's like a potpurri that isn't fruity or flowery but more spicey (nutmeg, clove, not cinnamon).
  • Watching Romanian cartoons is funny. The voices sound very adult; not the more silly kid sounding voices that many American cartoons have for children.
Romanians don't care much for their roads, but there are lots of taxis. Potholes are UBIQUITOS and huge. Bogdan, the host that has been driving us around has a nice/small Alfa Romeo and he is constantly dodging potholes like someone in a golf-ball sized hailstorm.
Romanians smoke EVERYWHERE... Except McDonald's (this isn't about smoking, but remind me to show you my "food pyramid guide" with McDonald's food on it.... VERY funny)
Romanians really like sour crean (smantana). Many dishes have it as part of the sauce (sos)
