Writer's Encyclopedia A B C D ... View A-Z List Radio commercials Advertising copywriting for radio is concise and colorful. Using short phrases, it appeals to the senses of the listener through well-chosen adjectives and verbal images. Repetition, a conversational tone and a central theme are fundamental to successful copy. Finished copy must meet certain format specifications. It must be typed, double-spaced, on a continuity form. This form also includes the references to music or sound effects to be used, the name of the client, the length of the commercial, and the first and last dates the commercial will be broadcast. The copywriter makes liberal use of punctuation: Dashes and commas indicate pauses; exclamation points and underlining, emphasis. Copy for the air never includes abbreviations. Most of the necessary information is supplied by the client's account executive, but a writer may wish to consult the client's print ads, other printed information on the product, or the client himself. Dictionaries or handbooks of pronunciation are also helpful, especially with foreign words and proper names. See Also:

What It's About
This is a romance novel. Dru Haverford's rich husband, rendered sterile by an accident, sends her out to find a man to father a child. The events of the present are told against the background of a traumatic event that occurred in the past in Sudan. The characters all have a strong Middle Eastern connection. Dru and her cousin are both belly dancers, her husband is Bedouin, handsome Ben Hall (the sperm donor) grew up living in the Middle East as his anthropologist father studied the tribes, and there was that horrifying event that occurred when they were adolescents in the Sudan. The book is set in Massachusetts, and ensconced in the rhythm of people who fish for a living.
Its Good Points So far as romance novels go, this one offers much more complex character development than most of the ones I've read. It was satisfying to read it, and by the end I found myself caring about the characters more than I usually do when I read a romance novel. For those of us who love Middle Eastern dance, there were references throughout the book to Middle Eastern dance, music, instruments, and culture. Although the dance was peripheral to the plot, the characters did dance in a couple of places where it seemed to fit. There were many tidbits about the cultures of the Middle East and North Africa which were interesting, although I must admit I wondered how accurate the details were after having caught a couple of "facts" that I questioned.

The Not So Worthless Romance Novels and Their Unscathed Younger Readers Kristin Cockerel
Reading the Romance , the average age for romance readers is 24-49 according to Fred Kerner, Harlequin’s vice-president for publishing, in 1984 (55). This is the age group that Radway and many others are concerned with in the studies of romance novels and romance readers. A 1982 survey of romance readers in The Romance Revolution reported that about 12% of the readers were either under the age of 16 or ages 16-25 (119). While younger readers may not represent the majority they nonetheless exist as a portion of the romance reading population, and as a portrayal of romance novels in a positive light will demonstrate, these younger readers can benefit from reading romance novels. If individuals achieve a pleasant feeling or increased vocabulary or more effective communication skills or escape from their romance reading, then romance novels do possess value and do result in benefits that they would not have received had they not opted to read. How to Write a Romance and Get it Published , more than 24 million people read all kinds of romances (1). Romantic Fiction includes: Historical Romance, Regency Romance, Series or Category Romance, Romantic Suspense, Western and Indian Romance, Long Contemporary Romance, Futuristic Romance, Science Fiction Romance, Gothics, and Time-Travel Romance (6-8). Radway reports that romance novels equal more than one-third of the sales of mass market paperbacks (4). A February 1998 report

I think a lot of us can agree that a large number of romance novel covers are pretty silly and are just asking to be ridiculed. So that's exactly what I did. I bought a few of them at the used book store and got to work on them. The artwork almost writes its own jokes. Take a look at the following covers I "reimagined." Whew! Okay, I think that's enough for now... but I may add some later at a future date after I rest up from creating this batch. Lovin' takes a lot out of a boy. Hey, feel free to send me some of your own. Due to the unexpected and wild success of this page, I felt compelled to get busy and create some new covers. I can only hope they can match the popularity of the originals... McVicar/Stein Photo Copy Service Collection http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/whi/feature/mcvicar/ The Wisconsin Historical Society continues to create interesting and valuable online digital collections that document various aspects of local and regional history, and this collection is now exception. Angus McVicar and George Stein were two local commercial photographers who spent much of their lives taking photographs of street scenes, the built environment, businesses, and public events, in and around Madison from the 1920s through the 1960s. In 1999, Stein donated the negatives and prints from the pair's work to the Wisconsin Historical Society, which proceeded to place 2,000 of the 10,000 images into this online collection. Visitors to the site can view a list of some popular searches on the site, including browsing through areas that include "Service Stations", "Banks", Wisconsin State Capitol", and "Railroad Cars and Employees". Overall, this fine collection will be of great interest to historians and those with a penchant for local history. [KMG] Back to Contents Back to Top

    "Stop, My Butt Hurts!"
    The Yaoi Invasion

    by Kristy L. Valenti
    from The Comics Journal
Panel from Kizuna: Bonds of Love On Halloween weekend 2004, a mutation of the familiar comics convention took place, as over 1,000 fans mostly women gathered in San Francisco to meet their favorite comics creators, hold panels, participate in costume contests, play videogames and auction men off as dancing partners. Welcome to Yaoi-Con 2004, held to celebrate the fastest growing subgenre of shoujo manga; one devoted to young men, the young men who love them, and the women who can't get enough of, as one fan put it, "hot passionate man sex." A SHORT HISTORY OF YAOI In the mid-'70s, a group of women shoujo artists, known as "The Magnificent Forty-Niners," began to experiment with shounen-ai , which focused on platonic male/male relationships. The term shounen-ai evolved into June, inspired by a magazine of the same name, which frequently contained stories on the subject. The word June was replaced by the term Boys Love (in English), or BL, which spiraled out to encompass, according to www.Aestheticism.com

For the medieval genre see Romance (genre)
A romance novel is a novel from the genre currently known as romance. The genre has two strict criteria:
    • the story must focus on the relationship and romantic love between a man and a woman; the end of the story must be positive, leaving the reader believing that the protagonists' love and relationship will endure for the rest of their lives.
If a novel does not fulfil those conditions, fans of the genre are likely to claim that it belongs to a related genre, such as women's fiction or chick lit , or that it is just a mainstream fiction novel. Some romance novel readers would claim that the genre has additional restrictions, from plot considerations such as the hero and heroine meeting early on in the story, to avoiding possible themes, such as neither hero nor heroine committing adultery in the course of their relationship developing. However, these are not hard-and-fast rules, and some writers deliberately write stories that may put off some readers in order to push the genre's boundaries.

    What It's About
This is a romance novel which relates part two of the adventures of a woman named Skye O'Malley during the era of Queen Elizabeth of England in the 1500's. Skye herself is Irish. This book, which is a sequel to Skye O'Malley , takes the reader from England to a small duchy on the Riviera to Algeria to Morocco to Paris and back to England. The author has clearly done extensive research on the historical era in which she has set her book. She seamlessly incorporates real-life historical figures such as Queen Elizabeth and real historical events such as the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre in Paris into her story line. The heroine of the book, Skye O'Malley, is portrayed as a very strong, independent, intelligent, but passionate individual. The reason I've included a review of this book on my web site is that part of it is set in Algeria and Morocco. I don't want to give away too much of the plot by telling you what goes on there, but suffice it to say Skye is called back to the Orient to attempt rescuing someone dear to her from slavery.
