62. About "Strong" Heroines In Romance Novels
The Daddy thing is not restricted to romance novels many books and movies in open their mind and accept that it is okay for heroines in general to
http://www.mrsgiggles.com/books/soapbox/strong_heroines.html
About Those "Strong" Heroines
Many of them just... aren't.
It seems like a simple concept, the "strong" heroine, but so many romance authors get it wrong. A "strong heroine" is supposed to independent. She can make good and intelligent decisions of her own. She doesn't have to know martial arts - she just needs to know how to take care of herself, be it in the boardroom, in the courtroom, or in war. But so many authors seem to assume that as long as they make the heroine a secret agent or an army officer, the heroines are automatically "strong" in an as-they-were basis. Give me a break. Because of many readers arguing for the case of stronger heroines in romance novels, there is currently an assumption that "strong" heroines are a separate species of heroine, an Uber-Heroine type that romance readers either admire or cower from. I don't know how that happened, but the phrase "strong heroine" has somehow mutated into a bizarre caricature of some pro-choice liberal secret agent kickass bombshell heroine. Supporters for the strong heroine are deemed radicals. Some readers argue against the strong heroines as if a strong heroine automatically rejects conservative values that they cherish dear. But a "strong heroine" shouldn't be associated to politics or ideology. A single mother who manage to take care of her kids and run a successful business is a strong heroine. A secret agent who manages to smash a terrorist ring on her own is strong too. They are just strong in different ways, but they are all independent women who can take care of themselves.

Amy Lamboley at 05:46 PM Beauty Queen - Julia London Beauty Queen is the abortive offspring of an ill-considered union between chick lit and the traditional romance novel. The basic premise of the story involves a recently divorced beauty queen deciding to go back to work to find meaning for her life, meeting a man, and living happily ever after. Retrograde sensibilities aside, the main issue is that the conventions of romance novels and the conventions of chick lit just don't mix, resulting in an irritatingly described series of events that I hesitate to dignify with the term story. Warning: Arcane and potentially scary discussion of the difference between romance novels and chick lit below the fold. At its core, chick lit's emotional heft relies on a basic identification between the reader and protagonist. The heroine of chick lit is an ordinary woman, belly fat and insecurities included, who achieves some manner of (usually provisional) success through her native wit and often a generous helping of luck. Chick lit validates emotional weight it assumes women attach to the everyday trials of life by making them the main subject of the plot. Chick lit takes the archetypical character of the common trickster, makes her female, and allows her to marry the prince. By contrast, romance novels feature an idealized heroine who captures her prince because she deserves him. The romance novel heroine's struggles are of a more traditionally epic scaleagainst, for example, a scheming villain, or the limiting strictures of society. Though there is an element of identification between the reader and the heroine, the heroine is more a projection of the reader's best self, rather than a realistic portrait. Romance novels are, at their core, about escaping from the mundane, rather than elevating the mundane.

BellaOnline's Romance Novels Editor Erin McCarthy: The Interview Hello, and welcome back! I have another special, pre-holiday treat for all of you: an interview with Erin McCarthy! Being a fan of good erotic romance, I've been reading her stuff since her first novella for Brava, and I haven't been disappointed by picking up everything since then. Her latest is
Houston, We Have a Problem (Brava), and she has Mouth to Mouth due out in January. Enjoy! Bella: How long have you been writing, and what led you to want to write romance? Erin McCarthy: I've been writing since first grade. *g* Seriously, I have wanted to be a writer since then. I wrote a story about a witch in the first grade and it won a district-wide writing contest for my age level. When I first started writing as an adult, I was writing what is now called women's fiction-relationship stories that didn't necessarily have a happy ending.

Novel
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
DeFoe's Robinson Crusoe, Newspaper edition published in 1719 A novel (from French nouvelle , "new") is an extended fictional narrative in prose . Down into the 18th century , the word referred specifically to short fictions of love and intrigue as opposed to romances —epic-length works about love and adventures. Having become one of the major literary genres over the past 200 years the novel is today the object of discussions demanding artistic merits , a specific literary style and a deeper meaning than a true story of the same content could claim to have.

    Novel/Romance: Unstable Words
One meaning of the English word novel has remained stable: novel can still signify what is new due to its "novelty". When it comes to fiction, though, the meaning of the term has changed over time:
    • The period 1200-1750 saw a rise of the novel (originally a short piece of fiction) rivalling the romance (the epic-length performance): this development, which one could describe as the first rise of the novel, occurred across Europe, though only the Spanish and the English went one step further and allowed the word novel (or, in Spanish
